Okay, here's an experiment. I took the merged Ange sprite with the OG eyes and added shading, made her face and waist a tad wider without making her noticeably chubby, and for good measure adjusted everything to match more with the OG color scheme. This is about as far as I can go to merge the two styles.

It's inferior to simply patching the game.

The special effects are garbage compared to the original and make a lot of scenes awkward as fuck (like the one in Natsuhi's room). The translation is terrible. And the mouthflaps are cringy as hell.

Oh, and it also adds terrible CGs from other versions of Umineko that the PS3 patch doesn't have. And I think it also has achivements or something, since it's a program of its own rather than just a patch to the original game. Nothing better than that to take you out of the experience.

Umineko Project is just the PS3 game ported to PC in it's entirety. The steam version has achievements. I find the animations to be charming. Stuff like the golden butterflies fluttering across the screen or the barrier impacts reverberating are a nice touch. And I don't see why people always complain about the mouth flaps when you can TURN THEM OFF. And features like being able to check the name of an OST are pretty nifty. Then there's the fact that the PS3 patch is only about half the resolution of Umineko Projects due to downscaling all the visuals to fit the OG window size. And the fact that The PS3 patch links the voices to the other sfx meaning you can't adjust one without the other.

I make that point occasionally, but Higanbana the doll sits upon a cabinet in the infirmary, and I was pleasantly surprised after a rereading to discover that sitting in a high position is a recurring theme of Higanbana the character.

In the first chapter she appears sitting on the top of the toilet walls, looking down. In the second chapter she appears sitting on top of a wall before her fight with the headmaster, also looking down. She also appears sitting from a high place in the beginning One's Girl Day, and also in Utopia (twice iirc). There are probably other places I've forgotten.

It's not surprising, given the connexion between a youkai and its physical locus, but it's very cool that Ryukishi thought about that.

The rules of magic in Higanbana are incredibly interesting to think about. Ryuukishi really did a good job there. Every youkai power has some weird implication or loophole that makes you question things.

I like how Higanbana attacks other youkai by possessing random objects and turning them into dangerous shit, like the metal pipes inside the street walls or the hard corners of Nonomiya's albums. She also causes random accidents or injuries, sometimes completely out of nowhere, to get people to come to the infirmary. It's pretty creepy, actually.

I also like how the Headmaster is actually the weakest one but is fed by the others and considered the 1st ranked youkai because he has the power to maintain the status quo. Without him, the humans would get freaked out by the constant disappearances and creepy shit and close down the school, essentially killing them all.

I also like how that weird ass camera had the power to fuck with his powers and literally drag people's erased existences out of his belly. The guy can barely step out of the principal's office before his power starts draining fast, but that fucking camera was such a threat to him that he actually went out of the school, chased Nonomiya through an alley and used up even more energy to try and kill him.

ResidentSleeper post, boring and probably stupid, don't read if you don't take about wacky thoughts.

I've seen a couple of Tarkovski movies recently and it made me think of Umineko: both have their settings in an uncanny and cut off from the world place(the Zone for Stalker for example and Rokkenjima for Umineko).
In this place, the border between real and supernatural is hazy, everything is possible, what we know is no longer the norm.
Tarkovsky and R07 have a similar mindset about certain things. In Umineko, we must let some magic enter in our live, we must stop to seek for one true truth all the time. Tarkovski thinks the same way and he keeps saying, in Solaris or Stalker, that we lack faith, that we only believe in science and facts.
In both works, science and surnatural are confronted by different characters(erika-like, beatrice-like...)and they discuss about their world's views.
Obviously, both works are very distinct and the stories are completly different, but I couldn't help to find those similarities.
Since I read Umineko, I have the bad habit to bring a lot of things I read/watch to it. It opened my eyes on a variety of themes and I'm thankful for that.

Yeah. Higanbana, especially the first night, is really subtle about some implications. That's why I still rate it highly among Ryukishi's works. Things like Higanbana's usage of her doll sitting pose is not explicitly told, it's just something she does and is left for the reader to connect the dots.

Higanbana's hunt and her associated methods are fascinating. She represents the concept of escaping through self-harm and the subsequent suicide at the end of it. That's why she puts people to the infirmary, to teach them unhealthy method of coping. She's absolutely fascinating that way.

Some of her tug-of-war with other youkais can almost be seen as philosophical fights. In the Princess' lie she says that Midori is lost to her, because the girl escaped through illusions, not self harm. In the same way, her own hunt in One's Girl Day or Utopia is very interesting.

What is never spelled explicitly is why she reacted that way at the end of Utopia. I have seen people not understanding what happened but it always semmed rather simple to me. In both Utopia and Hameln, what attracts her ire is an attack toward Marie, though she pretends not to care and give valid reasons for her anger afterwards.

IIRC in Hameln Hikaru badmouth Marie rather violently, which prompts Higanbana to take care of the entire situation. And in Utopia Marie is completely wrecked by Sumire, with Higanbana pointedly being cool as a cucumber during the scene, but taking vengeance immediately afterwards.

That's probably the reason the Headmaster was just standing in the middle of the street like that while slowly cornering Takeshi. He was trying to conserve energy and that's also why he politely asked for the camera instead of forcefully taking it at first.

I really liked how Takeshi was scared shitless but still burted out a stupid defiant reply (something like "and what if I refused to give it back?"). He immediately regretted it and didn't even know why he said something like that. It reminded me a lot of how Keiichi would say rude shit for no apparent reason and get in trouble, especially to Ooishi during their first encounter in Tatarigoroshi.

Others are complete fucking bastards. Like Izanami, who target depressed kids with no hobbies or goals in life and throws them into literal Hell. But he seems to take a liking to kids who manage to improve themselves and find something to do with their time.

The cool part is that you can only get hit by Izanami's curse by hearing about the 13 steps story somewhere and actually count the steps while you walk down the stairs, allowing him to make you perceive that extra step and begin the horror story. If you didn't consciously perceive it and realize what it means, the curse wouldn't have any effect.

Only a boring as fuck kid with nothing to do would be thinking about that shit and allow for the youkai to mess with them, which is exactly the type of kid he targets. It's genius.

I also really like how these awful creatures come into existence through random horror stories made up by kids that just happen to catch on. It's a very interesting concept reminiscent of how the legend of Oyashiro-sama's reincarnation allowed for Rika to perceive Hanyuu and retroactively made it so she had existed for centuries.

From a conceptual standpoint he represents escapism though delusions: and while it's not sustainable and nibble away at your heart, it's also the only thing that can help sometimes (and prevent Higanbana from being able to touch you, i.e self harm). That's why he is such a ambivalent youkai.

I have never found Izanami to a bastard. He is, fitfully, a coach: finding meaning through ordeals and improving yourself is its hunt. I don't doubt that he eats kids that loses to him, just like the system eats away to the reject, be he is not evil, and just as sketchy as the Black Tea Gentleman.

BTG and Izanami are two completely opposite youkai. BTG offers escapism through delusion, while Izanami offers the hard, difficult, truth that sets you free, should you be able to rise to the occasion. In that sense, it's telling that you need to invite Izanami first, to do the first step.

Agreed. It's an old concept, omnipresent in Shinto, Shamanism, and modern works, but it was well executed.

Higanbana is not that hard as a character. She's evil, so others don't have to. She's a good girl at the core, but sees that her duty is to test people, cull the evil, weak, and deluded. She makes the night darker in order to make the day lighter.

She cares very much for Marie, in large part because Marie is a sweet child with not an evil bone in her body. She just pretends not to care in order to tough her up and to not lose face. Don't look at what she says, look at what she does. Her overreaction to any harm done to Marie is a clear proof of that.

One Girl's Day is an important chapter if you want to understand Higanbana. She's very cruel in that chapter, but it serves only to further Yoko's passing. She put Yoko in the infirmary, but it only served to prove to her that the life of ghost is not a good thing. At the end she released Yoko's soul, even though she didn't need to.

If Yoko had been evil or defeatist on that day Higanbana would have eaten her soul without problem. But she passed with flying colors, so Higanbana didn't.

Higanbana is only a difficult character to understand because she says one thing and means another. Her entire mask is one of indiscriminate cruelty. Marie saw through that mask, and that's another reason why they're so close.

I think your explanation is lacking Ryukishis trademark psychological complications. The real core of the dramatic tension in Higanbanas character is that she is cruel because she is afraid of being vulnerable, and she has been this way long enough that she has even acquired a taste for it. When Marie offers Higanbana her friendship that identity is called into question - and there is a part of her that wants to believe that she isn't fucked beyond repair.Her erratic behavior can be explained by Higanbana not wanting to admit this even to herself because she's afraid of hoping. She tells herself that she's just playing along with Maries delusions.

You're right about first night Higanbanas cruelty being a kind a challenge to Marie. She wants to see someone successfully stand up to her and the cruel world of the night she inhabits, so much so that she's even willing to handicap herself to a certain extent to make it happen, but it still has to be a fight for it to be something she can believe in, so you better believe that under the right circumstances she would rip apart her new friend. This definitely isn't true anymore by the end of Utopia, where she makes her decision to go full antihero.

Your interpretation is certainly a valid one, but I can't condone it. I have reread Higanbana more times that I can count, in part while translating it, and I don't think Higanbana has a character arc. The reader is only peeling away layers of her character. By Utopia she hasn't meaningfully changed: she's still the same Higanbana you see in The Spirit Camera, punishing the wicked and overreacting to threats. You only gain a slightly better understanding of her character by watching her answers to changing circumstances.

Her entire character arc is in the last chapter of the Second Night. While I dislike the Second Night, and this chapter, it spells for you what Higanbana believes in first her meeting with Marie. She believes in making the night darker in order to brighten the day. She's cruel and wicked, but only to people who deserves it (weak included). Takeshi deserved it: he made a girl kills herself. She went after him because he was deserving of her wrath, and the entire chapter is her wicked way of taking reparation.

It certainly could be said that she lost herself to her duty, and that Marie acts as a pet who brings the best of her. I would absolutely agree to that.

I wouldn't agree that Marie changed Higanbana in any way, and certainly not that she pushed her into an anti-hero path on a character arc of her own. It only seems superficially that way, but the good ol' Higanbana from chapter one hasn't changed from the good ol' Higanbana from Utopia. Marie tries to bring the best of her, and Higanbana drags her feet, but it's all a superficial dance. Smokes and Mirrors.

My point is that by Chapter 1 I had an understanding of Higanbana: she was wicked to the evil, but good inside. And by the last Chapter I had the exact same understanding of her. She didn't meaningfully change, the readers were just shown more of her, the layers peeled. I can understand how it could appear like she changed, but it's all an illusion.

As for Ryukishi trademark psychology, it's there. Higanbana is a fascinating character for what she believes and how she acts. She doesn't need to change: people are still talking about her either way. The depth is in the interaction between Higanbana and Marie, and the pull between the intermingling layers of Higanbana, not in the growth of her character.

I thought they were all very memorable and contain a lot of important characterization.

There are a bunch of TIPs in the fourth arc that are told from the prespective of Rika's mom, and it talks about she has a love-hate relationship with her daughter (very similar to Rosa and Maria) because she finds Rika creepy as fuck and detached from reality.

Saikoroshi goes in detail about how Hanyuu basically destroyed Rika's respect for her parents and made her feel nothing about her deaths. But even before the world-jumping bullshit started, she already ruined Rika's relationship with her mother by taking her place and teaching her all sorts of things since she was little, stealing all their mother-daughter bonding moments.

There is an entire TIP about the mom went with Rika to a school party or whatever and Rika just sat there, bored by everything. I assume this is after she had already grown tired of repeating the same life over and over again. Every time she tried to bond with her daughter by teaching her something, she already knew about it because of Hanyuu. And when she was a little kid, she would talk about this "Hanyuu" character as if she was just another member of the family. It's really creepy and worrying behavior if you look at it from her mother's perspective.

I think it's a very interesting relationship reminiscent of the Rosa/Maria one, but it's completely skipped over in the anime and forgotten by even the VN readers for some reason. I think it's a very important aspect of Rika's character, her main "sin" and the reason for Hanyuu's guilt. It also makes her mother an interesting Rosa-like character, at least when it comes to the way she feels about her kid.

It was a pretty interesting concept and I was intrigued while reading it, but the author did nothing with it. Sure Rika apparently had a rocky relationship with her mother due to her time loop, and I'd have liked more about that, but it's like two TIPs and no bearing to the plot.

In a perfect world DEEN would have expanded upon it, but we aren't in a perfect world.

Not even "the demon's script"? That one is very memorable, dude. 50+ year old Akasaka, Ooishi's failing health, all the internet rumors about an alien experiment gone wrong, the countless cospiracy theories about Hinamizawa, the swamp completely covered with concrete, the idea of Takano's scrapbooks being a script for a tragedy devised by a demonic psychopath and the disturbing mental image of that "demon" from Tokyo laughing about the disaster 30 years later, knowing they got away with it. The anime even improves upon it by showing a traumatized adult Rena (in the novel, it was unclear whether "Girl A" was still alive or died in the disaster).

It's a fantastic TIP.

I love how the rain during the festival in Tatarigoroshi is not just there to set the mood for Teppei's murder. It's also a subtle hint that these are all parallel worlds and not just someone repeating the same groundhog day. Which implies that all these worlds are parallel dimensions that really exist, not just a single timeline that gets rewound out of existence every time.

In a groundhog day situation, everything would be exactly the same except for the actions of the characters from the point the loop starts. But thanks to the genious idea of introducing rain in Tatarigoroshi, we know that these are different dimensions with subtle differences in things like the weather, which no human could possibly alter by just rewinding time. A hint about the true nature of all these arcs, as early as Arc 3! It's beautiful.
