Denpa(電波) is a Japanese subculture characterized by its combination of strange and cute themes, coming into existence from within the otaku community. Denpa is mainly expressed through denpa music, which incorporates the strange and cute theming into its composition and writing, though denpa cues also appear in manga, anime and games. Depna subculture and denpa music in particular are both deeply rooted within the galge industry as well as the doujin community, with the two sides giving form and shaping denpa into what it is today.

The purpose of the thread is to share denpa works and discuss denpa subculture.

It has been some time since the last denpa thread, so I decided to clean up the OP, add a little context and remove the less relevant links.

Let's jump start the thread with a small contribution -
"Arina", by circle Neruneruneruge from 1999 (data track included).
https://mega.nz/#!5MsxjY5L!QSS9Y3AdvuXf0UzgHzLtU5HriYEObrq8M_NwRuBnRWw

Neruneruneruge is artist Neruge's personal circle. Active as early as 1992, Neruge was a prolific composer within the Japanese MIDI community. In the late 90's, he started collaborating with several other musicians, bringing his past works to life with vocals.
His work reached a peak in 2002, with a live concert featuring his regular guests: vocalists Morinaga Tohko, Chihiro, Inaba Umi (Miiko of MOSAIC.WAV) and Haruka Shimotsuki. This live event is the one featured in "なごべすと!".

Unfortunately, I cannot track him down after the mid-2000's. As it seems, he quit doujin music for good. You'll notice his appearance in "Approach" and "Fairway", linked in the previous thread.

Probably not denpa in a strict sense, but Mariko Goto has recently returned to music and her new work is so crazy that it gave me a bit of denpa feeling. I definitely can imagine her doing as the radio waves tell her.

Between the last thread and this one I found out about まにきゅあ団 ("Manikyua-Dan" -> "Manicure Squad"?), a 1993 offshoot of Troubadour Record, which debuted the previous year. Behind it are perhaps the earliest instances of proper vocal denpa:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Tm-Tj57gDg

The video was actually uploaded by the vocalist who sang it! The same as with "junk.test 通" which I linked in the previous thread, these old souls upload their past works to cherish their memory. In this case, too, vocalist Ikuko Ebata wished to commemorate 20 years for the formation of Manikyua-Dan, but without noticing 24 years had passed, and so she had to celebrate their debut slightly past the original intention. All in all, she made very decent contributions to denpa music from before it was even called "denpa". She deserves to be known better by denpa fans.

"Minna no Manikyua" album(1995)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYZAzukYZuU

Something a bit more hardcore:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTFA1pMnDwE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAg-gzBQ1pc
The former is actually a latter album from the "junk.test" series. I wish I could get my hands on the rest of them.

Very impressive! There's definitely a lot of reception! It's a shame that it sounds so distorted. Is this how she was several years back as well?

Thanks for your contribution, it's always really interesting to learn about and listen to these foundational works.

About Mariko: I'd say she didn't sound like this before. She mostly did jazz/rock/punk fusion with Midori and then started her solo career as some kind of alt-idol singing experimental pop, but was overall "tame", and she finally retired in 2015. During last Christmas, she suddenly came back with a demo tape sounding wilder than ever before, with some people saying this is how her solo career should have been from the start, and honestly I couldn't agree more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W-6tdmB9Sc

On a more denpa-related note: I only recently noticed how much mirawi sampled early capsule:

This is a sample of the beginning of Soratobu Toshikeikaku from LDK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as4ZGaJRv7w&t=1m09s

Here the beginning sounds just like Plastic Girl from CCR: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Nu8cxBerK0 (Mirai no Energy really feels like a lost early capsule album)

This is a sample of urban complex from Nexus 2060: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4rbEBQpgoM&t=1s

>> No.21149051

>>21148891
Unfortunately the Mariko Goto video you linked is unavailable for me to watch,.

I listened to the Capsule tracks and then to Mirawi's tracks, and it really makes me wonder whether he sampled them or not. The "LDK" one cannot be because "Mirai no Energy" came out a year earlier. Mirawi has had a peculiar style as a composer and arranger ever since "Real Season" of 1999. It's not impossible that he's been influenced by them, but it's hard for us to tell as is.
Tomorrow arrives a shipment for me with Mirawi's first album, "kizuna" from 1998. The booklets for "kizuna" and "Real Season" both, as well as his old website, might shed some light on it.

Soratobu Toshikeikaku was actually released earlier in a single (Aeropolis, from August 2005) and also appeared on a video by Studio Kajino from September on that year (https://vimeo.com/26725882)) before LDK was released. But you're right, it seems all these dates come after Mirai was released. What the hell man, my ears must be deceiving me.

I've recently been listening a lot to Miko Miko Nurse's opening theme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCxvwcEiZ5E
The combination of the denpa music and the explicit sexual footage is rather comical. The part at the end was popularized as a flash video: http://inmhosg208.web.fc2.com/html/swf/mikomiko.html

The few limits creators had on the content makes me think of the early 2000's as the golden age of eroge. That's when Popotan got big as well (and as we know, its opening theme was adapted into the later "Caramelldansen" dance). All in all, a big time for otaku culture in general and denpa music in particular.

The rising bands of Under17 and MOSAIC.WAV, which connected between singing and voice acting, anime and eroge, contributed greatly to the flavor of denpa music at the time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAn4jHWHjRc
I stumbled upon this some time ago, which caught me by surprise, as I had just watched the Genshiken anime - this song appeared within Genshiken as the opening theme of a fictional anime by the same name as the song title. Made in the heyday of Under17, in 2004, it was simply the most fitting band for fabricating a theme song to capture the hearts of early 2000's otaku.
This is another appearance of the same song, ten years later and without the aid of Masaya Koike.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR-tYBbbvCs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI-nHps5lXU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vbx9sSpdp8c

I can't really say when was the last time I saw denpa cues in opening or ending themes. Perhaps modern eroge and ecchi anime still have traces of them.

>> No.21156118

Does denpa music tend to be very harmonically complex? Is it possibly a distinguishing property of the genre?

I'm really into music theory, and I've noticed a lot of tonality in denpa has more in common with jazz and classical music than mainstream pop. Here are some examples to check out.

Poyacchio - ロリきょにゅうのテーマ - https://instaud.io/3xD1

Mosaic.wav - Monster Parade - https://instaud.io/3xD0

Toromi - 秘密のリボン - https://instaud.io/3xDb

All these songs are harmonically similar. Just to name a few techniques,

* They rely on rich circle of fifths progressions
* Lots of unstable diminished chords to bridge chord progressions
* Background instruments and vocals act as counterpoint to the main melody
* Heavy use of extended chords beyond simple triads.
* Inverted and split chords, where the bass doesn't play the root note.

None of these techniques are really used to much effect in the majority of rock and pop music, and it's really cool to hear it with such intensity in these songs. A lot of denpa producers are very talented.

All depends on the perspective. Denpa was originally mainstream slang for loonies, but its assimilation into otaku culture shifted its connotation. The strangeness aspect was adapted from mainstream expression of "denpa" in art. The cuteness aspect was adapted from the expression of the qualities of "moe" through bishoujo media. Both were processes beginning in the early 80's, manifesting in the music of the early-mid 90's - for strangeness, it was bands like Kinniku Shoujo Tai, and for cuteness it was the opening themes for various anime and bishoujo games. The opening theme for "VS Knight Lamune & 40 Fire" which I linked earlier is one such example of a denpa song precursor.

>>21162795
It was the early-mid 2000's when the term "denpa" in otaku contexts was starting to become commonplace, and it was then that outrageous eroge were in their peak. The works of bands Under17 and MOSAIC.WAV as well as composers like Loser Kashiwagi, provided for opening themes colored by otaku culture conceptions and misconceptions. I don't think a definite image of music theory was considered, but simply the otaku spirit.

So-so. There was less variety in arrangement at the time, and having listened to many Leaf arrangement albums before, I can't really find a particular theme to latch on. However, it includes a data track with plenty of text - artist greetings and round-table discussions among them. Apparently, Bermei and Mirawi received help from Neruge at the time, which explains how Morinaga Tohko got to them for their next album "Real Season". I don't see myself listening to "kizuna" in full again.

There were several past events that brought about spurts of suspicion and prejudice against otaku, though the bad reputation is a product of both negative media reporting as well as the sudden growth of anime and manga consumerism in the 1980's.
Key events are:
Regarding the Fukugawa Street Stabbings of 1981, the murderer claimed in his trial that he was under the influence of electromagnetic waves. This gave rise to the use of the word "denpa", "dokudenpa". The murderer was a user of psychoactive drugs, but it was not clear whether his actions were a result of that or there was a prior mental illness. Ultimately, the coined word was used to describe people seemingly under the effects of psychoactive drugs, detached from reality to the point of harm. This image was not directly associated with otaku until several years later, however.

These are several steps away from what is traditionally labeled "denpa", but nevertheless I think they are relevant to denpa. The denpa theme can be explored even without the influence of doujin works, with little to no "moe" factor.

As for the OP image, it is the cover of a 2004 IOSYS album, a denpa collection not unlike the one to be released a decade later. Hence its title "Denpa Special". Is it not cute enough? I thought it was rather fitting.

This is a very interesting article! I knew of games like "Saya no Uta" and "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" to fit the genre, but the only title I ever played was "Chaos;HEAd".
The term "denpa game" has seen use since its coining in 1996 by "Shizuku", but "denpa" has not been used to describe otaku-catered music until several years later. Around the same period, 1995-1996, the term "moe" has also seen increased use within otaku, but it wasn't used to describe otaku-catered music until several years later, either.
At best, I can credit "Shizuku" with popularizing the term "denpa game" within the otaku community. I think it's deserving of a mention, but not of emphasis, because denpa in otaku has mostly been expressed using quirkiness and cuteness rather than horror throughout its history.

As the album title suggests, several Sapporo artists gathered to create fake promotional songs. Two previous IOSYS songs, "Love Ramen Life" and "Pico Pico Super Toilet", were adapted for the album with different vocalists. It's interesting that these songs were collectively labeled "denpa" as early as 2004 for reasons I'll explain at a later time, and beyond that, it's the first time IOSYS did a large-scale collaboration with other musicians, as would repeat in their Touhou works and much later denpa collections.

With the exception of eroge and anime derived denpa like "True My Heart", "Gacha Gacha Cute" and "Mottoke! Sailor Fuku", there were three major sources for denpa-style music in the late 2000's, to be featured in Nico Nico medleys: Touhou arrangements, Vocaloid compositions, and Idolm@ster songs. In fact, there is a close relation between denpa music and idol music, with the main exception being that the vocalist is rarely the product in denpa music.

I'll note Kumikyoku Kaiko, "Nostalgia Medley", a medley dedicated to the flash videos that were popular in the early 2000's. During Nico Nico Video's early years, new media was spawning so fast that "Miko Miko Nurse" and "Sakuranbo Kiss" were already old news, and bishoujo game arrangements were remembered by very few.

Music-wise, the farther back one goes, the more the J-pop roots of visual novel opening themes appear. Sex-focused visual novels, eroge, experienced a surge in popularity in the early 2000's, which I believe is why modern denpa is often traced back to that period. Eroge are naturally quirkier and funnier than your average plot-driven visual novel, so they were accompanied equally quirky opening and ending themes. As you can see, however, elements of denpa appear in older works as well.

The best thing you can do for me is to continue to contribute to denpa threads. There is a lot that I don't know that I'd like to hear about, so even if it's something you liked in a song, or a short story of something a circle did, please write about it.

With that in mind, the opening theme of Triangle Heart, "Chiisana Boku no Uta":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y58Kk8jULlY (1998)
Manack arranged this for Eterna Musik's "Albatross". The arrangement is performed by Morinaga Tohko. The link for Albatross should still be up, so be sure to listen to it when you have the time. The lyrics are exemplary of moe image songs:

"Within my small chest, it has developed long ago
Just one important feeling

To you, who turns and runs somewhere,
I shout in a loud voice "Do your best!"
Every time you smile,
my heart becomes tender, so...

I'll become strong for someone's sake
Saying "You're mistaken!" you'll smile, but...

Within my small chest, it has developed long ago
There is just one important feeling

Over the you who walks next to me
I've kept an eye for a long while
The courage you gave me is your smile
My treasure, more important than anything else

Now for your sake, I'll sing!"

These words transmit well the magic of moe. That a character, an image, can form through singing alone, I think that's amazing.

Idolm@ster was molded after the success of the first dating simulation game, Tokimeki Memorial, but its gameplay was more similar to the raising simulation game Sotsugyou~Graduation, in which a new teacher guides five female high school students. The opening themes for both have been posted above, under years 1992 and 1994. The opening theme for Sotsugyou~Graduation feels like something out of an older Idolm@ster to me. The main gist of Idolm@ster was to focus on the interaction between the player and various girls, as the previous games did, with pop-idols as the medium. The characters created for the game were divese: some, like Yayoi Takatsuki and the Futami twins carrying a cute and quirky image, and others, like Chihaya and Ritsuko carrying a cool and collected image. Since each character could sing almost every song, it meant that not only the composition and lyrics of a song influenced the given image, but the performance and dance of the idol.

I included songs like "Positive!" and "Do-Dai!" because their writing is inherently moe-denpe. They are themed after the nonchalant lives of middle-school girls, with cutesy topics like going out after school and preparation for a first date. I also included "Agent Yoru wo Yuku", because its serious, sexual(!) theming is transmitted by the cute voice of a supposedly 12 year old Ami Futami.
I think the overall leaning of the appeal of idol music, specifically in Idolm@ster, is towards moe. Even serious and elegent characters like Takane Shijou can transmit a powerful moe image, for example through her image song "Flower Girl":
https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm11112954
https://www.project-imas.com/wiki/Flower_Girl
Listen along with the lyrics, and I'm sure your heart will throb as well.

As for Dempagumi.inc, unfortunately I know very little about them. All I can tell is that they are an Akihabara-based group themed around otaku hobbies. Although their execution is a bit distant from denpa in eroge or doujin, I think they still live true to the denpa name.

The same "someone else" chosen to voice Mii in the anime adaptation is Momoi Haruko of UNDER17.
Mii's character song, performed by Toromi:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svOBX6d-M54

I think Toromi had a natural transition from voicing characters to singing, and decided to pursue a musical career after several years as a voice actor career. Miiko too originally aimed at becoming an eroge voice actor, but later on shifted her focus to music, with MOSAIC.WAV's rising popularity in the mid-late 2000's.
I suggest checking out her works under Toromiseyasan, as listed here:

Ah yes, Flower Girl is such a nice song. Thank you for all the information. I'm going to check out those games you mentioned. Im@s is one of my favourite franchises, and I really enjoy seeing where things I already am a fan of get their inspiration. You seem to be really knowledgeable about late 90s and early 2000s otaku culture. Where did you learn what you know? Living through it? Or just learning stuff over the years? Most of the media I enjoy from Japan originates in this time period, especially otaku related works, it's really interesting to learn more about it.

I suggest reading Patrick W Galbraith's books "Moe Manifesto" and "The Otaku Encyclopedia". Though they are not the most orderly, they provide interviews with several people who witnessed and affected the development of otaku culture.
Yasuhiro Takeda's autobiography sheds light upon geek culture before otaku, in the 1970's.
https://www.gwern.net/docs/eva/2002-takeda-notenkimemoirs
In the previous thread, I shared an overview on the development of Desktop Music(DTM), the umbrella term for amateur electronic music produced through personal computers, riding on the rise of the MIDI format and early online networks. It also details the influence student protests in the 1960's influenced the development of geek culture later on in the 1970's. It's in Japanese, however, so you might have to jam it into Google Translate.
https://web.archive.org/web/20190306223414/http://www.geocities.co.jp/MusicStar-Piano/5159/study/soc/contwrt1.htm

You can also learn by purchasing otaku goods blindly - I ordered out of personal interest eight Comiket catalogs of the years 1997-2002, and a greater deal more CDs that I never listened to before. It's costly, but it provides personal touches that cannot be found anywhere else. The catalogs, for example, tell me how big To Heart was in 1997, or whether Touhou had any doujin circles before 2002. The CDs expose me to artists whose only publicly available information was long lost in time, and can only be traced back with Wayback Machine. The artists of the late 90's and early 2000's mostly used personal websites in the absence of a social network like Facebook or Twitter, and they almost always put up links for the websites of their acquaintances and friends. That way you can still jump between some of the remaining websites. In the end of March, Geocities service stopped and only websites that were crawled are available for view, which means a considerable amount of information won't ever surface again - though it might be available in print within the booklets of CDs, or referenced by other people.

I also learned a fair bit from other posters on /jp/, particularly in the Akihabara@Deep thread from several months back. The second Akihabara@Deep thread unfortunately never received traction, but its OP contains a collection of links from the previous one relevant to the documentation of otaku. Be sure to look for them in /jp/'s archive.

Last but not least, stay away from "Otaku: Japan's Database Animals". It's overly convoluted, somewhat inaccurate and in general not a fun read. I think the author's background in sociology envelops the whole book in mumbo-jumbo that doesn't appeal in the slightest to a non-academic reader.

On a separate note, I found out that IOSYS's "NEET no Uta" parodies Mobile Suit Gundam's opening theme.

So far I've deviated from pure denpa discussion plenty by discussing otaku history, but I don't want to further generalize denpa subculture into otaku culture. I previously suggested forking into an otaku culture thread, but I was deterred by the thought of it not getting enough traction. Would you participate in such a thread? Or is it better to keep it within the civilized atmosphere of this thread? I'd like to hear from all readers of the denpa thread.

On a separate note, I wonder what sort of influence the denpa saturation of 2003-2006 had on the generation of otaku in the next three years, between 2006-2009, the blooming years of Nico Nico Douga. The late 2000's are also the time of the moe boom, when Akihabara was covered completely in moe and the usage of the word spread outside otaku. Moe anthropomorphism began finding its way into common consumer goods, like bags of rice. The otaku behind the making of Nico Nico medleys were submerged in denpa from young age, so it doesn't surprise me that the songs featured in them had inherent moe aspects.

WHAT THE FUCK, MOMOBAKO IS GONE

Ran to /jp/, only to find out she's become a shittuber.
WHY?

I know why, but WHY?
She could have just kept the "Momobako" character for the vlogs and keep doing music on the side.
After all, Shitzuna GAY has branched into doing music now that she's very popular. And Shitzuna can't even sing, it's pure autotune. Momobako has the upper hand here, being a trained singer.

I don't think I'd like to listen to normalfag-pandering washed-down j-pop sung by """Patra""", if she eventually sings, I hope it's shit so I don't subject myself to listening to this garbage new character.

Patra looks like a generic (adult) female side character, not sure why that's the design she went for, the voice doesn't match at all.

I've learned Japanese, so I thought I would eventually reach out to her and suggest she sang scat, but now any prospects are RUINED. I have no other singer who I think would be hilarious and good to listen to in the genre.

RIP.

If you're still around to see this, sorry for responding so late!

Nice! That song is a super good example of what I'm talking about. It's cool to see that the interesting music theory manifest itself in an obvious way to the sound itself, even if you don't deconstruct the song into theory on paper.

0:36-0:40 has three chords that break a lot of musical "rules". Here's how it works as far as I can tell:
* Key is in Bb

* The starting chord is a I, and the melody plays 3 2 3. Normal diatonic melody over a normal chord.

* Second chord is a vii7, and the melody plays 4# 3 4#
The melody is what's driving the progression here. In the first chord we played 3 2 3, but now we simply move up all the notes a whole step to 4# 3 4# and play the pattern again. But as you can tell from the sharps, 4# doesn't sit naturally in the diatonic scale and gives a real sense of instability. Furthermore, the chord has shifted to vii7 which doesn't share much in common with our major key. It's an odd chord.

So that's the point here. The melody has been shifted up one step giving it symmetry to the first melody, but at the expense of harmonic consonance. In one sense the song stays structured (the melody), but it also is becoming more disorganized and distant (the chord).

* Third chord is a IIImaj7, and the melody plays and holds a 5#.
This is the most fascinating part. Again this progression is driven by the melody. Just as the second part is raised a whole step from the first part, the third part is raised a whole step from the second part. This time we just play the first note of the pattern and hold it for emotional satisfaction. But the IIImaj7 chord breaks the rules of diatonic chord progressions. It consists of 4 notes but it only shares 1 note in common with the original key of Bb. It's almost the furthest you can stray from the harmonic structure of the song. We're way out there now. But this IIImaj7 chord isn't completely random. vii7 (the second chord) to IIImaj7 (the third chord) is just a variation of a V-I cadence (v-I cadence in the key of Eb). This is the most structured chord progression there is. So even though the notes relative to the root key become distant, it's stays geometrically organized with both respect to the chords and melody.

Conclusion in next post:

>> No.21349448

>>21349441

This breaks the rules of modern pop music because most modern music will stay diatonically structured 100% of the time, and it will only stay within that one scale. In this case the song temporary ceases to be diatonic at all. Harmonically it completely breaks. It ceases to become regular pop music, and instead spends a few chords focusing on the relative intervals of the notes themselves.

This tendency to "break out" of the diatonic scale is actually really familiar to modern classical music and jazz. And yet here we hear this compositionally quirky section in a denpa song. It sounds really emotionally satisfying to listen to, and somehow these jazz techniques fit so well with the over-exaggerated sound of denpa. The voices and instrumentation are over the top, and so is the music theory.

Long wall of text, and I'm kind of vague at points, but I hope this makes sense.

I thought to translate to the best of my abilities two songs in the album, in order to give a glimpse of the theming of older cute and quirky music. The first song is called Kaizoku Pirates(海賊パイレーツ) which literally translates as "Pirates Pirates".
Link: https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm16288705
Lyrics: https://pastebin.com/NQWYQArq
I think the combination of the macho pirate image with the young girl voice is striking. I also think that the male vocals of the band helps immerse you in the iconic pirate atmosphere, something I believe female vocalists on their own could not do very well. The included a photo was taken in a live event in Shinjuku at the end of October, almost a month before the release of the album. There is no information about the live event, so one can only assume that Manikyua-Dan gave a sneak-peek to their new album with this song about pirates.

The second song is called Gaugau (がうがう), which I assume are some sort of animal noise or other meaningless sound. I did not translate the two speech excerpts in the song.
Link: https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm16288762
Lyrics: https://pastebin.com/xPcFv5GC
An impressive degree of brain-melting noise, with the most satisfying hook. A song that's mostly gibberish.

I think it's amazing how this band managed to nail the denpa spirit years before denpa music as we know it came into existence. I left the vocalist a comment asking her whether she views her songs from more than twenty years back as a precursor of denpa music. I wonder what she'll reply.

The producer of Manikyua-Dan, Shinji Hosoe, was in large influenced by Yellow Magic Orchestra (Y.M.O.) - what led him and others create a parody band called Oriental Magnetic Yellow (O.M.Y.). He was also a game composer. At one point, he shifted his works to the SuperSweep label, and under it released an album in the mid-2000s in the spirit of the popular denpa music, "Moe Techno-pop".
Here is Ebata Ikuko's song from the album:
https://youtu.be/3JzpXmXC4BA

She referred to her own music under Manikyua-Dan as "bursting technopop in quirky childlike voice" (Japanese technopop is essentially synthpop). Are her songs from the time not "moe", then? I believe it's simply that the term has yet to gain the necessary popularity to describe music. It's beyond me to tell whether the first composers of "denpa songs" were influenced by Troubadour Record and Manikyua-Dan or not.

What you say in that you can go further back is true. Quirky and cute elements appeared in all sorts of Japanese music, including the aforementioned Y.M.O.
https://youtu.be/pNi-GyGxWrw
I think the best approach is to look at it from the musicians' perspective - would they regard their own works as moe or denpa?

To join in on the music theory masturbation, I'd point to Ta-Ti-Tu-Teatime as having similar harmonic colours as well.

I think the melody is pleasant and simple to understand to the untrained ear, while also fitting right in on top of the the more sophisticated harmony.

The style strays a little from the crazy dissonance of the more, ah, "trudenpa" aesthetic, but I'd say it's just good music.

The denpa-sharing feels are just too tempting I would imagine for anon, even should you know you are going to have guilt for doing it. There was an incident before where an anon came here angered and complaining after she disallowed the use of her art in their twitter profile pic. Painted her up to be a real bitch over it, too. It's funny we do such things without permission hoping our good intentions will compensate for this guilt, and in some cases the outcome is actually lovely. I remember seeing a song that I uploaded had been tweeted by the vocalist herself (not Choko), with her saying "look what somebody did!", and in the comments somebody had expressed some disapproval of that, to which she replied enthusiastically, "I'm happy!"

Japanese artists are generally displeased when they see their art used by others without permission. This is especially apparent with profile pictures, which are almost never requested permission. I think the denpa song community in Japan is aware of Western piracy, but I haven't really seen anybody voice anything about it.

I think those of us who directly communicate with denpa artists are sometimes found in situations where we are responsible for ripping their albums. Though the rip will likely not be traced back to you, I understand how people may feel like they're really doing something detrimental or at least not morally acceptable. For this reason I pondered as well whether or not to take down some of my own rips. At the end though, when it comes to Japanese music, those to support the artists the most are often found to be the biggest pirates.

Even albums that were produced in very low numbers are destined to surface again, but it's hard to tell how many of them actually make it to secondhand sales, whether on auctions or on websites like suruga-ya. The formula of being forgotten and deteriorating over the years is the gist of why many albums have a hard time making it to the second-hand market.

>>21429548
Japanese, as far as I know, mostly use peer-to-peer software that allows for more anonymity than torrents. This is because of how strict the copyright laws are, and the history of imprisonment of people who both uploaded and downloaded music, anime and manga. With music readily accessible, and doujin rooted deeply within otaku culture, it makes sense for Japanese to be against piracy.

There is a lot you can find simply by searching "同人 CD セット" or "同人 CD まとめ". It's how I stumbled upon some rare albums which have long since lost their sentimental value. That's how they end up summed up in sets in the first place, as the sellers don't bother to appraise them for their true value. Since they are bundled in sets, they tend to arrive with albums you weren't initially interested in, but as you explore them you get to like them as much as you did the albums you ordered the set for, perhaps even more. I'm not as driven to blindly purchase anymore (after realizing how much I spent over the last 12 months on music), but I still regularly look for sets like these on yahoo auctions and mercari. You can't afford to miss a bargain for a rare album.

I don't think eroticism is muchof a focus in doujin denpa. There are only few denpa circles notorious for singing about obscene topics.
When it comes to eroge theme songs, from my experience they're usually pretty clean even if their clips are not. It's common for them to be completely innocent compared to what they're supposed to represent.

It comes down to whom you're sharing it with. Even if it's not lewd, there's a good chance people are going to think you of a deviant anyway.

Ultimately denpa music isn't very accessible to the different crowds within otaku, and will likely have even less success with people outside otaku.

ANAKREON's "Utakata ~utakata~" - Ebata Ikuko's second solo album, produced a year later in 1997 again with composer-arranger Aki Hata.

Ebata Ikuko was the first doujin vocalist with her appearance in the first pressed doujin CD in 1990, and was likely the first "real" denpa vocalist, shifting focusing to quirky and cute themes as early as 1993. ANAKREON's albums may then be the first solo ventures of doujin vocalists, seeing as there were very few vocalists at the time. This album, however, takes less of a quirky and cute form and instead gives light to more serious themes.

Looking ahead from Ebata Ikuko's point onwards, let's think of prominent denpa vocalists to emerge in the next few years:

- In 1997 Momoi Haruko began activities in Akihabara, which was undergoing a rapid change into otaku consumerism. She was quickly teamed up with Masaya Koike, who worked alongside her even before their formation of UNDER17. However, their unit didn't last long, and Haruko Momoi split and went on to pursue her own vision in 2004.

- In 1998 Morinaga Tohko first provided vocals for a doujin circle - she was integrated into an existing "To Heart" based clip mid-production, for the several next years from then worked alongside the founder of the circle, Neruge. She has largely sealed off her career in 2007 with the release of discography album "Nagobest", and has since mostly participated in doujin and commercial works as a lyricist.

- In late 1999 vocalist Miiko began activities under aliases Inaba Miko, Inaba Unmi and Usami Umi, providing voice to amateur eroge and participating in various doujin albums. She became a hit with commercial eroge in the early 2000s, providing voice acting as well as theme song performance. Her unit, MOSAIC.WAV is likely the longest lasting of its kind, having been active since 2000.

- In 2000 Kotoko began activities as a part of I've Sound, and from within it and outside it worked on countless eroge title theme songs, both in performance and in writing.

- In 2002 Toromi provided vocals for an insert song in her debut eroge title "Popotan". She would continue to provide voice and vocals for eroge titles for several years until completely shifting into a solo career.

At that point in time, the word "denpa" used to refer to quirky and cute music, generally within otaku subculture, has not had a concensus. It took until 2003 for Miko Miko Nurse's theme song to really wrap around the idea of a genre dedicated to such music.
There has been some collaboration between Momoi Haruko, Kotoko and Toromi over the years, with covers and guest appearances. Ebata Ikuko has only returned to work alongside old friends from Manikyua-Dan and TROUBADOUR RECORDS, who now operate under SuperSweep. Morinaga Tohko has continued perfoming under circle vanile*essence, with the help of circle Ooedo Express Mail. Miiko and MOSAIC.WAV, as we all know, are going strong and staying true to their style.

Just sharing some songs I love.

It's sad to see some circles that only publish one single and apparently are lost forever (or they leave the scene to focus on their actual jobs).

In this case we have the ふぃるまーち gang which I really like and it's a shame they didn't come up with another album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQZAP2P4gGA

Also, denpa*garden which according to one member "is about to break up", so she moved to her own project PlasticGarden*: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJidXKvFa7U

In 1996, Manikyua-Dan produced an album focusing not on Ebata Ikuko's childlike voice, but on the techno tunes. It features more male singing and sampling, creating an overall unique vibe compared to their other albums. One track from within the album was later adapted into the aforementioned "Maninology".
Here is one track from the album, about mahjong. Soon I'll put up a link to the album as well.
