Right after Tae Kim. I was very confused for the first few days and couldn't understand much, but as I persevered and kept reading, things started falling into place. The more time you spend reading per day, the faster you will improve.

It helps to read something with a relatively small range of vocabulary to make the process less painful (e.g. Flyable Heart, Leyline, etc.). You can check Wareya's VN stats page for more suggestions:
http://wiki.wareya.moe/Stats
(You want the VNs with the lowest numbers under the "freqlist 95% Target" column.)

think of it this way. your brain is full of neural networks that do different things. some of those networks are responsible for the feeing and experience of loving-kindness. you have to nurture those loving-kindness networks for them to come back alive again. you nurture them by repeatedly redirecting your attention to the intention to be loving and kind towards yourself and others. there are many ways to do this but the underlying mechanism is the same. where attention goes, energy flows.

and that doesn’t mean ignore the sadness within you - quite the contrary. when you encounter sadness and pain, turn towards your physical experience of it, with an intention of understanding and forgiveness. if you don’t nurture loving-kindness first it will feel impossible. but if you do, it will be very liberating.

It's a meme. J-E dictionary is fast so it doesn't interrupt your reading like a J-J dictionary does, and even if the definition isn't as accurate, that doesn't matter since so long as the J-E definition gives you the gist of what the word means you can fill in the blanks with context.

You're never going to learn what words mean just by reading definitions of them in a dictionary anyway; whether the dictionary is J-E or J-J makes no difference. The only way to learn words is through lots of reading and listening and coming across them in a variety of different contexts.

Eh, I think it's fine to use J-J dictionaries alongside J-E. Like make an effort to look up the J-J definition first in as unabridged a dictionary as you can find. You'll learn more word meanings that way and potentially find new usages if your dictionary is good enough to have attestations.

And if you can't read a definition, look up word compounds you don't know in either the J-E or J-J dictionary. Just know the latter leads to a lot of work if you have to do this more than rarely since you'll wind up recursively doing lookups. My ideal is to go one level deeper then give up and use J-E for both the unknown compound and any unknown compounds in the first unknown compound's J-J definition.

Monolingual dictionaries are a huge waste of time until you're already good enough in the language that you can read the dictionary with ease. Before then, it's a huge time investment for such a small gain, relative to bilingual dictionaries.

I have a friend who, half a year ago, said he was going to use monolingual dictionaries to study. He would look up any word in the definition in the same dictionary ad infinum. Obviously he has made literally zero progress.

It's not a meme but if you have to force yourself to use it you're probably not far enough along. It gives you better definitions than some approximate translation usually, but if you're struggling comprehending explanations in Japanese it's not gonna help you at all.

It's again some advice that usually doesn't need to be given to people explicitly. But maybe for someone where Japanese is their first L2, they might always gravitate to the bilingual stuff out of habit.

Hello, about 3 weeks or so ago I began my journey learning hiragana/katakana, and I mastered them in 2 weeks-ish. I started writing down simple/lower level kanji as well as ones i would think are relevant daily. I am an American currently living in another country doing very easy work where i have an absurd amount of free time, and I am trying to impose a really dense workload on myself to learn as much as I can while i'm here and make the most of my time. As of right now, I'd say i'm committing a total of at least 3-4 hours a day combined with everything I do. On top of using Heisig, Kanjitree, and various other games for kanji, I'm armed with my genki workbook/textbooks 1+2 and using duolingo as kind of a tool just to practice hearing/saying simple words and phrases (it's great for drilling but not for learning obviously). All that being said, do you have any tips for how to make really steady progress aside from the actual physical resources? Some people will take this kind of thing at a comfortable pace but I really want to drill and cram in as much as I can in the next 7 months or so because i know there's a lot to be gained from it. One problem i experience for sure is burnout from learning so much as 5 kanji at a time, so any tips for unwinding are welcome as well.

I want to immerse myself in Japanese and learn more efficiently that way, but I'm also just starting out. I just memorized all the Hiragana, and I'm working on Katakana now, and haven't even begun to touch Kanji. At what point should I swap my language over to Japanese for my PC?

I say my computer because I spend 80% of my time at my computer. Most of my time is taken up by the screen and using my PC, so naturally changing the language for that would make the most sense.

None whatsoever. In fact there is no difference between someone in their late teens and their fifties.
From a neurological perspective your ability to learn only declines when you seriously enter senility territory, which for most people is some time in their 60s or 70s. For some even later.

The reason why most people don't learn as much that late in life is because they're lazy idiots and tell themselves they're "too old" to learn in the first place.

But if you have to ask these questions, you're probably not motivated anyways and are looking for excuses not to learn.

Kanji of the day:

>> No.21141225

Hey ya'll. It's Calvin here. As some of you have seen on my Twitter/YouTube over the past year or so, I have a history of popping up, then disappearing. Changing my language, then going back to Japanese. I wanted to talk a bit about why I have been doing that and what I am going to be doing in the future. I believe it is appropriate to go all the way back to March 2018.

March 2018 was when I founded the AJATT method through mattvsjapan and decided that I was going to be learning Japanese. This was quite exciting for me. I was excited to not only learn Japanese, but to also show the world my progress. Well, throughout the journey I struggled immensely. My discipline was out of whack and I held myself to ridiculous expectations. I got to a point where I would literally set deadlines in my Journey that were due 7 years from now. In general I had this "all of nothing" mentality. I figured that if I wasn't doing Japanese as much as I possibly could, then I just simply wasn't doing enough. Due to toxic thinking like this, I struggled immensely. And another HUGE factor that let to my failures was the pressure of people seeing my struggle. I was so terrified of posting a big goal that I have on YouTube, then come 1 year later, I didn't make any progress. So, when that happened, I said to myself that I can "start over" and make things right. I do that by starting over in another language. That way, I can show people a Calvin that is actually making good progress in his language journey. The problem here is that the language I switched was a language that I didn't care enough to learn. I would convince myself that I wanted to learn it, but I truly didn't. So then over time I would eventually go back to the language that I want to learn, Japanese. This is in a nutshell what has been happening. I wanted to post this to be 100% real with you guys. So, where do I go from here?

Well, now I am going to fit Japanese into my life that is practical. I am also not going to get so caught up in YouTube and social media in general. The fear of failure would CRIPPLE me. The fear of being seen as a failure online would cripple me so incredibly hard. So, long gone are those days. I am just going to do Japanese, immerse everyday, do my reps in solitude. I am also going to be okay with things not going exactly as I planned them. Instead of thinking of an end goal, I am going to be thinking of a "trajectory" with my Japanese. This will be a lot less stress and way more practical. I would like to personally thank YogaPants for taking the time out of your day to talk with me for an hour and a half about all of this. Your words truly helped.

I will no longer being saying "K bye" on here or YouTube. I don't want to just drop of the face of the earth. I am just gonna be chill and not worry about all of that extra stuff right now. I am just going to focus on living my life and just incorporating Japanese into it in a healthy manner. My relationship with social media is not very good, so I won't be super active, but I will check in every now and then.

To those who have read all of this, thank you for taking the time to do so. I am happy to be completely honest with you all and I wish you all the best of luck with your goals.

Peace

Most people who hate it haven't done it. Most people who swear by it aren't able to imagine what it's like to just learn kanji readings alongside words.

Some enlightened individuals have tried RTK and shit on it. Especially people who have done RTK but forgot how to write all the kanji after dropping reviews, so it's like they never did RTK in the first place. And these are the people whose opinions you should take seriously because they can see both sides of the argument. If you have an IQ of 130 or higher you KNOW that RTK is unnecessary and will do more harm than good for most people because it's too boring and the longterm "efficiency gains" are nonexistent. RTK cultists will argue that doing RTK increases your longterm efficiency so that they eventually eclipse people who didn't do RTK in vocab. The problem with this argument is that even if you don't do RTK your ability to recognize and remember new kanji increases too! Arguments for RTK can be used to justify having someone learn Chinese before Japanese - the fact that learning one thing makes learning another thing easier doesn't necessarily justify learning that one thing.

Anytime spent with the language and the writing is good.
Everybody learns slightly differently and have different goals and things they enjoy.
RTK won't hurt you.

So if you're the type who wants to be able to write kanji and maybe have a better foundation before you start immersing then you might want to do it. If it bores you to death then run from it. I did lazy kanji and then decided I wanted to be able to write and so I'm going back through and doing rtk proper but it's definitely not necessary.

The point is that a lot of guides have recommended doing RTK up front. This is very dubious. For most people this means exclusively focusing on RTK for a few months and doing little else. This sucks so tremendously, will require the majority of your daily attention and at the end you will feel like you got little to none tangible benefit from doing it.

There is no real downside of doing RTK on the side at a very slow pace honestly and if you feel it's helping you, I don't see an issue in adding a couple of Kanji per day.
This will mean you will do RTK for somewhat between half a year and one full year however and then you have to decide if it eats up too much of your study time. Theoretically you'll be busy with Japanese for longer than a year either way so there should be no issue.

Full disclosure: I did RTK years ago when I first wanted to learn Japanese and it was recommended. I pushed through it in a couple of months going as hard as I could, but after finishing that knowledge seemed very unhelpful. I still couldn't read shit most of all and over time it bothered me so much that I stoppd doing reviews for RTK cards altogether. This was around the time I entered college as well, and during my first year I did less and less Japanese for various reasons and ultimately dropped it altogether. Now after I picked it back up I don't really feel there has been a lasting impact. I would be hard pressed to produce any Kanji from memory and that was what I was practicing back then. At most I might not get so confused with similar Kanji shapes but that benefit is very dubious and not worth the months of effort I put in back then. This time around I went for vocabulary first and after half a year my level of Japanese is already so much higher than it ever was it's ridiculous.

Now I am enjoying actually knowing what the kanji mean and it has made learning vocab a lot easier.
RTK does seem pointless for a true beginner if you don't have a simple grasp of Japanese already. Building basic vocabulary and grammar and starting to read / immerse seems a lot more rewarding than pushing through RTK alone.
While doing RTK I am also watching Japanese subbed anime and mining vocab from there like at 10 per day.

Also I want to thank this group for putting me on to Lingodeer. I was pretty happy with Duolingo, but I am starting to like Lingodeer more. My plan is to pick up the Genki books with this next paycheck, and may look into Rosetta Stone as well.

so i’ve heard several times now that a smart way to use anki is to drill the reading only, for many new words. example:
front 美貌
back びぼう

then by the time you encounter the word again in context, your brain will be so accustomed to seeing it that it will readily absorb the meaning the next time you look it up. is there anyone here who has done that? does it work?

Literally the other way around.
First you should see the word in context. Either example sentences like core, or your own mining.
Then you put the word into anki to remember it. Ideally also save the sentence where you saw it unless it's a trivial word like nouns for physical objects where there is no room for ambiguity.

And obviously you should also put the meaning in English, or if you're that pro a J-J dictionary definition along with the reading on the back side.

>> No.21144715

>>21144581
i tried a number of different things for a few months at a time before dropping anki and that one seemed best to me
i still had defs on the back but i didnt try to recall them and i only read them sometimes when i wanted to check
the logic for me was that flash cards work optimally going from one small thing on the front to one small thing on the back so focus on the most important detail
a translation or short definition isnt enough for lots of words anyway and you dont really know the meaning until its intuitive from exposure to it in lots of contexts
if i can read it then its real fuckin easy to look it up even without tools and also if the context makes it obvious what it is then i can read the sentence without stopping for anything and make that extra connection with no effort
theres prob some truth to it being easier to get the meaning down when you dont have to check the reading at the same time but it aint magic
most importantly it really helps you on the number one goal of anki
dont overdose
also dont forget to make ur own destiny etc do it because you want to try it not because someone said its optimal

This is how I got the majority of my English vocabulary as an L2 so no it's not bullshit. However I agree the reading part makes it harder in Japanese. Still works if you have spoken words, know the most common onyomi readings of the Kanji involved or just furigana though.

depends on the type of word like concrete nouns tend to be the easiest for me to guess and also stuff where the last kanji in the word effectively categorizes it

Krashen talks about this. "How can we understand language that contains structures that we have not yet acquired? The answer to this apparent paradox is that we use more than our linguistic competence to help us understand. We also use context, our knowledge of the world, our extra-linguistic information to help us understand
language directed at us."

The кошка curled up in her lap and started to purr.

Congratulations, you now know a word of Russian. Correlating written and spoken forms is no problem as long as you're doing enough reading and listening.

You should be able to do 15 new kanji per day in under 30min/day and in 200 days you'll know 3000. That gives you 2 min per kanji. You should be able to write one out in under 1 min, and then just imagine the kanji after the first few times of writing it keyword to kanji. That's not too much work for a pretty big reward.

Fine, if you want to split hairs you can now associate the written form of a Russian word with a concept you already know. That's half of knowing a word.

As for pronunciation, if you never had the experience of encountering a word in print first, incorrectly guessing the pronunciation, and then later hearing it and correcting your understanding then you must not have read much in English as a child.

it seems like ultimately the underlying factor is time. because if you see a word 20 times across different contexts over a year without a dictionary, you'll probably learn it. but most of us don't want to wait 20 exposures for every word.
i read this study that tested the ability to recall new words from reading (white) vs reading + dictionary (grey) vs reading + dictionary + "learning activity", perhaps comparable to anki (black).
its clear that active effort into learning a particular word results in vastly higher retention. the white bar might be as tall as the black bar given 6-10x the amount of exposure and time.

im not tryin to split hairs but i can on this post

mispronouncing new words in english is fine because ur using what u know about english to make the pronunciation in the first place

however did u see that little girl with her yomiko readman junior room books piled up the wall

thats the real difference and if that aint u then u stay at a much lower level for much longer

also ur brain is less spongy so u are even more doomed if u didnt get going when u were a kid

>> No.21146959

>>21146778
It's not bullshit but it undoubtedly makes the process of acquiring vocabulary much slower, and leaves room for mistaken interpretations of words to take root. There have been a few cases in English (my native language) where I've gone for years thinking a word meant something that it didn't, and the only way I figured out the actual meaning was after second-guessing my interpretation due to it not seeming to make sense in a particular context and checking the dictionary to make sure I understood the word correctly (only to find that I didn't).

It's irrelevant in our case anyway since, as you pointed out, Kanji makes this approach impossible for Japanese.

>>21146823
That's all well and good in a super simple sentence with only one missing part of the puzzle. As anyone who has actually read any Japanese will know though, rarely do you come across such convenient sentences (especially if you have a small vocabulary). If you try this no dictionary approach, most sentences aren't going to have enough comprehensible parts in them for you to guess at the meanings of all the unknown words. Remember that it takes kids ~5 years of hearing their native language all around the clock before they really start to get competent at using it.

The girl in that video is bullshitting when she says she never used a dictionary, just like she's bullshitting when she says she can read a full-length novel in 3 hours. Maybe today she doesn't use dictionaries, but she did at some point. There's no way you could enjoy reading books where you didn't know 95% of the words and couldn't understand any of the sentences. Who would put themselves through that?

>> No.21146964

>>21146921
>but most of us don't want to wait 20 exposures for every word.
Yea, but most people seem to think they can get fluent within 2 years and then quit when they realize it's not happening. It's important to also keep your expectations in check. Building a good foundation to expand on is way more important than trying to cram every possible vocabulary you encounter through your daily 4 hour Anki sessions.

Ideally you're in on this for the long term, as in for the rest of your life. I get that it's tempting to fast track yourself to fluency, but even the concept of fluency is so vague, that it would make much more sense to aim for getting to a point where you can continue learning by exposure alone without having to force everything through your study pipeline.
