As promised, here's the cool thing I was going to post about in the next thread.

https://github.com/scriptin/topokanji

The basic idea seems to be to do something like Heisig, except explicitly incorporate character frequency. Done formally, it means doing a weighted topological sort over the Kanji and their components.

There are a couple of different sources for frequency data which, of course, influence exactly which characters come up when, but it's clear from all of them that the first ~500 characters are all much more common and useful than the first 500 from Heisig's RTK. This concretely disproves the oft-touted idea that the "learn in component order" is fundamentally incompatible with getting any kind of practical pay-offs early on.

Let's compare the first 100 via a few approaches.

Heisig:
一二三四五六七八九十口日月田目古吾冒朋明唱晶品呂昌早旭世胃旦胆亘凹凸旧自白百中千舌升昇丸寸肘専博占上下卓朝嘲只貝唄貞員貼見児元頁頑凡負万句肌旬勺的首乙乱直具真工左右有賄貢項刀刃切召昭則副別丁町可頂子孔

Using KanjiVG All: (some radicals are mixed in)
一丨口日十干年人大亅丁竹笑二丿冂月八木本凵山出土丶寸寺時中彳行目儿見今刀分厶云会卜上彐尹事王玉囗国了子巾亠市門間生冖学刂前乙乂气気東耂者扌手自未来也地合方小県田高心思又幺夂後言立阝部勹勿場同斤新入衣艮

From the Aozora list of fiction and non-fiction: (again, some radicals mixed in)
人一丨口日目儿見凵山出十八木未丶来大亅了子心土冂田思二丁彳行寸寺時卜上丿刀分厶禾私中彐尹事可亻何自乂又皮彼亠方生月門間扌手言女本乙气気干年三耂者刂前勹勿豕冖宀家今下白勺的云牛物立小文矢知入乍作聿書学合

It should be clear that, even with the overhead of explicitly including radical "characters" (which aren't real kanji), the beginnings of these topologically-sorted Kanji orderings contain many more characters which are useful for basic comprehension, while still maintaining the "only learn based on components you already know" principle.

The next step would be to add these numberings to RTK decks as an alternate sort are (along with dummy cards for the radicals which of course won't need keywords unless you want to expressly add them), and try it out. I expect the "Aozora" list would be the most useful, and it's the one recommended by the owners of the repository.

trust me if your goal is to learn all the joyo kanji the rtk method is more than good enough, in fact it is pretty much perfect. The problem with rtk is that people don't want to dedicate 3 months of their life to learn kanji and they want to achieve results right away. these kind of people will never make it anyway.

>> No.21110355

>>21110343
Of course. But it's nice to see that by applying the ideas more rigorously it's possible to come up with orderings which have a much more sound basis. Potentially, being able to prioritise more frequent Kanji in this way may be able to prevent some fraction of dekinais from giving up due to not feeling like their work is translating into results.

>> No.21110360

>>21110302
Wew, this makes Heisig look like a shitshow. I think that's why people feel good about mining from scratch, because sampling content yourself approximates a frequentist approach.

The latter two throw way too much stuff at you way too fast. You're drawing entirely new shapes every other character. This is going to crush any beginner, not improve their work efficiency.
Why care about getting useful kanji right away anyway? If you have more time in the day, go do more RTK. There's basically no limit to how many mnemonics your brain can make in a day so just get it over with.

>This is going to crush any beginner, not improve their work efficiency.
Obviously I'm inclined to say that if someone is going to seriously struggle like that right at the start, then they're likely to not be able to ever make much progress period. But that's just my opinion. However, there might be something to be said for doing the topological sort again, this time not using the "character frequency" as the weight, but instead something like "usefulness as a component" - basically try to optimise for how much "mileage" you'll get out of each component before having to learn another to make more characters. I wonder how best to quantify that, and whether it'd be worth submitting upstream to the developers of that tool?
>Why care about getting useful kanji right away anyway?
Being able to actually see the characters you've learned when glancing at native material will, for many learners, provide a huge boost in motivation.

You've clearly not used a mnemonic in your life, please don't talk about things you have zero experience with.
The shapes are entirely irrelevant. You learn by component and the components are always unique. The first lessons are extremely easy, everyone will tell you this. It's the later lessons where the book has run out of easy components and is forced to give you a new rare one every few characters that are a slog. Mnemonics work well for arranging things, they don't work particularly well for something like 隹.

Technically, you don't affix keywords to kanji, you affix kanji to keywords. You aren't supposed to treat the keyword as a hard-and-fast reading when seeing the kanji. The end goal is to have all the kanji in your head with approximate meanings, and properly distinct from each other in ways which prevent misrecognition. Ideally you'd eventually make Japanese keywords which do a better job of each meaning proper. Mental dictionary, is the bottom line.

Two Chinese scholars a thousand years ago set sail.
One of them reaches Japan and points at 水 and then at a cup of water and the sea behind him. His Japanese trading partner goes "なるほど, みず"
The other reaches England. He points at 水 and then at a cup of water and the sea behind him. His English trading partner goes "Ah, water".
Why is the Japanese man correct and the Englishman wrong?

theres no reason at all to do RTK when you could just start reading and learning words first, do the radical deck, and then if you want to be able to write and never confuse similar kanji and their readings again, do a kanji deck that has you produce the written kanji from keyword AND readings on the front. and ofc change the english keywords to ones that seem more suitable based on words you already know, or even to japanese words. you'd rarely even need stories at that point, because the images of each kanji will already be in your head vaguely and knowledge of the radicals will just make it clearer.
kanji should not be frontloaded with RTK. it just doesn't make sense to learn them with absolutely no context like that. and most people who do it without learning actual japanese first end up over-valuing those shitty keywords.
like this guy i know whos doing rtk (doesn't read, can only speak at a very beginner, survival phrase level) showed me 遂 and tried to quiz me on what it meant. i said "well it can mean finally" because i knew it as ついに and he was like NOPE it's "consummate" and i was like -_-

Yeah probably I'm overthinking it and it is really only a problem if I don't understand other words in a sentence. So with my example I would mostly assume that somebody bought something, rather than owns an unknown animal. But it kinda sucks, because I would expect verbs to fill out the gaps and not add to the confusion.

Why would I get help from dumbasses lurking who can't even speak the language? Are you joking? This is exactly like /ic/ but for retarded weebfaggots.

The same type of garbage cunts on /ic/ didn't stop me from learning to draw, so why would I let you, a person who probably knows nothing, or maybe you do, that's irrelevant to me, stop me from learning this? I'm pretty invested in learning and I understand how much effort and mindpower it takes to learn. I'm prepared for that, as I've learned many other things that take lots of time and practice.

I never said it was easy like the dumbass above assumed. I just said that I'm interested in learning. Maybe I'll quit in a month or so. Who gives a shit? After doing all of this for a while now I feel any detailed guide on how to achieve fluency in a language is mostly misguided.

You will notice that even the people who wrote the guide, if they are fluent, did not reach fluency by following the things they put down there.
In reality the path to fluency is a lot more muddled, mostly stumbling around and figuring out what works and what doesnt work for you, which also changes based on how proficient you get in that language.

So really the only good general advice is to use the language as much as you can and try out all kinds of different things to see what helps and what doesnt and don't follow some platonic language learning plan to a T.

I still can't believe the original Nyaa owner just deleted fucking everything without making any backups before hand. That was such a shitty thing to do. If he knew that EU law was coming (which he did) and he was planning to delete the site if it passed, he should've made a backup the day before and shared it to limit the damage, or at least alerted other people as to his intentions so someone else could've made a backup.

Yes and no.

Often torrents have seeds even if they say they don't, but my experience is that there's usually only one or two (if you're lucky). I think the problem is that whatever tracker the new Nyaa is using to monitor seed and peer statistics doesn't detect old seeds who have been in the swarm since before the original Nyaa went down.

The important columns for older torrents are the leech column and the checkmark column. If the leech column shows quite a lot of leeches on a torrent, you're probably looking at a best case scenario of the torrent being 99.9% complete with no crucial game files missing (where the missing 0.1% is maybe a .txt file or something), otherwise you're looking at a dead torrent with most or all of the game data missing. The checkmark column shows the number of fully completed (100%) downloads, so if this column displays something other than "0" then there was, at some point after the new Nyaa site was created at least, a seed on that torrent (the leeches column, as mentioned before, can be helpful in ascertaining whether this seed is likely to still be around or not).

If a seed is listed on an old torrent, you know that the seed in question came from the new Nyaa site and not the original one. It's depressing how rare it is to catch sight of one of these...

Also, it pays to have patience when it comes to seemingly completely or partially dead torrents. I've had the experience now a couple of times that a torrent which appeared to have been completely abandoned actually wasn't and it was just that the lone seed for it hardly ever came online.

That said, I've also had the disappointing experience of all torrents for a particular thing being completely dead where even after sitting on them for a month I never managed to get even 0.1% of them, so it's best not to get your hopes up.

i would fully believe that you have the POTENTIAL to read if you can do the n2/n1 quiz by yourself at whatever pace you like. but if you can not do that then it 100% proves that you do not have the POTENTIAL to read and therefore you can not possibly be better than the quizmaster, who has proven both potential and ability.

its all a means to an end [to enjoy the epic light novella so long as u are compelled]

and surely isnt the ultimate end to be able to enjoy it WITHOUT having to look anything up? so why shouldn't that be considered a vital part of knowing japanese? it's the literal ultimate goal. who WANTS to be able to keep relying on shit like yomichan and texthookers their whole life? it prohibits you from consuming any content that cant utilise those tools

that will come when u do enough page flippin in the kanji dictionary (not going to speak on mouseovering cuz i think information is moving too quickly for ppls brains to deal with) and eventually ull be able to use it less and less

i honestly dont really disagree with you and i think the higher levels of the quiz are pretty dumb and dont correlate well with japanese reading ability, but i think it's very unlikely that someone can read well but struggle with shit like n2 level vocab. the opposite is undoubtedly true, you can be an ankidrone and know thousands of vocab like that french guy but be unable to read, but the test simple narrows it down who actually has the basic ability to read stuff.

i mean the quizmaster could undoubtedly btfo my gf in the quiz but that does not in anyway mean he can read better than her (in terms of speed or comprehension), this is something he struggles to comprehend for sure. but i think ultimately it's fair enough for him to say that he's the best when his comprehension is good and he also knows enough words to not have to look shit up all the time.

What do you mean? What dictionary do I use? Just JMDICT.

J-E is a much better choice for reading than J-J since it minimizes the amount of time you spend reading dictionary entries and lets you spend the maximum amount of time possible reading your compelling content instead.

>> No.21117668

Okay, I found a work-around. It looks like there's no setting so it's impossible to make persistent changes, but it's possible to edit the page using Firefox's "Inspect Element" tool to change the font and such. Bit of a pain though since you have to do it each time you open the reader, so I probably won't bother.

>>21117584
>It's not like you have to always read them.
If you aren't reading them then they're just bloating the popup and making the add-on less convenient to use. The whole point of Rikai-like add-ons is the first place is that they make word look-ups fast and convenient. Both J-J definitions and popups that you have to scroll through like Yomichan's take away those fundamental advantages and make you break away from your reading in order to perform the lookup.

On the very rare occasions I ever feel a need to look up the J-J definition, I just open qolibri. But I hardly ever do.

Anyway, I won't argue anymore. You're free to do as you please. I'm going back to my reading.

It's an addon-internal page, so I'm pretty sure you can't style it with other addons.

You could use a separate clipboard grabber addon, but then it wouldn't have the lack of "browser chrome" (nothing but the title bar and scroll bar) that the reader page has.

I'll consider adding more options tomorrow. I need to prepare an update anyway to fix audio playback on sites with aggressive CSP settings.

For now you can have the song that I just listened to on loop all day.

Cool. While you're here, one more quick question:
I'm guessing the answer is going to be "no", but is there any way that the reader window can be made to behave more independently from the browser window?

Currently, if you minimize your Firefox window, the reader gets minimized as well, and the reader is locked to always appearing on top of the Firefox window. It's not the end of the world, but it does make switching between the browser and reader windows a bit awkward.

Guys I just realized, there's literally no point to bothering with learning pitch accent

People who've gotten really good at Japanese but didn't a single about pitch accent:
1. Khatz (lives in Canada with Japanese gf)
2. Adam/the Jalup guy (lives in California with Japanese wife)
3. Yoga (met wife on the plane to Japan)
4. Pre-2017 Matt (chatted up the high school girls he showed around Portland in 2013 and got them giggling and impressed)
5. Tkyosam (banged tons of Christmas cake Japanese women)

People who gave a shit about pitch accent:
1. Dogen (probably speaks 80% accurate pitch accent at best when he's not doing an ultra-scripted skit, still, has a Japanese wife and kids)
2. 2018-present Matt (hasn't had any significant contact with Japanese girls around his age after he started becoming asinine and autistic about pitch accent and reading the atmosphere in Terrace House)

Why is this a jouyou kanji? 椎
It's completely worthless and not used in any common words. Where it's used they are written in kana anyway.

Surely a Japanese person is less likely to say something to a foreigner about their pitch accent, but that no Japanese person, regardless of how well you know them, would ever say something about it, even in jest, is bs. and even if they don't directly say something about it it's not like they're not going to be noticing and judging it.

Japanese cringe when they hear other Japanese people pronounce words with the wrong pitch accent, and the same is true when they are listening to gaijin. It's ridiculous to say they "won't notice", when pitch can entirely change the meaning of words lol. Just because they can use context to grasp what word you meant to say, doesn't mean it doesn't take more effort for them to understand what you're saying. Japanese people would most definitely prefer to listen to someone with correct pitch accent than someone with incorrect pitch accent, assuming that all else is equal. Yes, Japanese people will put up with incorrect pitch accent, but that doesn't mean they "don't care".
