Because even though I read all the NHK Easy articles from 2017 up until now, the cold brutal fact is that NHK Easy is generally only N3 vocab and N4 grammar tops. Reading every NHK Easy article hasn't even gotten me to the point where I can understand little 3-5 year olds in my kindergarten. The only reason I can get through the games I listed (DQ, Zelda) is because the nature of reading allows me to go as slow or as fast as I want, rereading what I need to when I need to.

Reading NHK Easy definitely helped a lot but I'm not trying to kid myself or anything else, it's not a one-stop trip to fluency.

Still slogging through Kira Kira. It's gotten a little better now that the story is finally getting started, but the heavy narration, and now in addition to that, endless exposition is still killing me.

The bit I just read had one of the characters explaining in excruciating detail what rock music is, then when that finally ended and I thought "at last, it's over" he went on to talking about punk music, then show a documentary to the other characters about punk music which was all explained through yet another wall of narration.

Getting through this sort of stuff with my slow reading speed is really painful and I'm struggling to keep going. The pacing is so slow and every scene so drawn out, and so much of the narration is riddled with completely inane drivel that doesn't make any difference to the story, or which is already obvious and doesn't need to be explained, and I'm just left thinking "Why do I have to sit through this? Get on with it already.". I think if I'm still not enjoying this by the end of today, I'm going to drop it and pick something else to read (seems a shame after the story finally got going but I'm just not enjoying it and it's making me not want to read).

Newby here. I had my first day of a Japanese language class that a local college provides, but I have a problem.

I don't know how to actually study. I graduated with a bachelor's about 2 months ago and I'm going to Japan in August, but I've never had to study in my life, or I have and wasn't aware of it.

So how do I study Japanese exactly? The guide doesn't really say. Anki is simple enough but what else? My teacher gave us phrases, months, letters, colors, etc, and I've learned a lot of the hiragana, but how do I study this shit? Do I just keep reading aloud these phrases until I can recall them in my sleep?

Flashcards are studying. It's studying vocabulary, specifically. Go read simple shit like Yatsubato if you want to practice grammar or try actually using the Japanese you're learning by writing Japanese sentences. And go fucking learn Hiragana you lazy fuck. Do this over and over until you don't fuck up a single time. Then do it daily for like a week until it gets nailed in your head to the point that just looking at it makes the sound in your head without any effort. Then do the same thing for Katakana.

If you read the guide and come out of it thinking this you are hopeless. Though, even if you did everything right you won't learn enough to do anything of use in Japan by August. Just learn phrases you need for stores and restaurants and call it a day if that's why you're learning it.

Read this: https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/learn/anon/alternativeguide.html
Do this: https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/learn/kana.html
Read this, but don't worry about memorizing any of it: https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/learn/anon/sakubi.html
Watch raw anime and read VNs. No translations. Use a Japanese-English dictionary to look up words you don't know*. For the first month, you may refer back to the grammar guide as necessary when you've forgotten something, but you should endeavor to stop using it as soon as possible. Don't spend too long on any given sentence. If you don't get it after a re-read or two, just move on. If what you're reading is boring, find something else. There's no practical difference between reading a 40,000 line VN and 5,000 lines of 8 different VNs. Don't expect any of this to be easy, but know that persistence will pay off.
If you read and listen enough (i.e. 6+ hours a day) over the next 2 years, you will be pretty good.

That's basically it.

But overall you should not get hung up on the majority of things early on and make sense of it as best as you can without dissecting everything into all its constituent components.

I'm somewhat early intermediate now and I consciously focus on some parts of the things I read more than others. you read it wrong then. there's no physical movement in that scene.

the entry is not correct because it has one singular definition that implies that's what it always means. it doesn't always mean that and most of the time it just means that dialogue was directed towards the speaker.

あく is an intransitive verb but ひらく can be both transitive and intransitive (ie it takes a grammatical object or does not). that's the major difference between the two.

there is a more subtle difference that relates to how the object is being opened, and basically ひらく is more about revealing the contents of something while あく is more about creating a space between two things to make an opening. but often they can be used interchangeably and only with certain things does it sound strange to use one in particular (ie you don't あく a 本 but you can ひらく or あく a 窓).

I think they don't do it due to epeen contest with other translators and the fact that nobody in general gives a fuck

It's a common theme for people on DJT to fetishize the posting of reading material. But when you think about it, if what you like is posts people make about the media they're consuming, why not say read threads actually about that media rather than a thread about learning Japanese? The answer is that there is no reason not to except habit. And once you realize that, you can be free of DJT. That's really the key transition here. Realizing what you actually like to read isn't DJT, it's posts about visual novels, about games, about light novels, etc, and going to threads about those things instead of DJT.

Because at the end of the day, the core of DJT is Matt and Anki and so on. Not media. And if it's not Matt and Anki and so on that you care about, there's no reason to come here.

To マジレス somewhat I actually have been reading eroge in Japanese for like 5 years, and read Dies irae at the 1 year point-ish. I ended up pretty unhappy by the end because seriously the game can get pretty fucking hard to understand and a lot of it went over my head. Like, the common route's one step removed from standard murder mystery stuff, sure, not that hard at all, but once it gets going it can be really tough to fully understand and appreciate. It's pretty easy to go "think not feel" and then miss almost everything, scraping by with narrow comprehension without necessarily realizing how much is going over your head. About half of the 3つ巴 scene and buildup went in one ear and out the other for me and I was in a constant state of "I kindaaa get it?" which is not really the mood you want to be in. I ultimately re-read Dies years later and had a much better time, it was really apparent how much I had missed. I really wish I had just waited to read it when I was good at Japanese rather than just winging a playthrough when I wasn't ready.

With all that said I'm just giving this guy a hard time for laughs. Posting memes and getting memes in return, it's all good fun. I don't know his actual skill level and even if he's not understanding anything, sure, that's okay. It's just a game. And even when not understanding the plot or dialogue well, the music and presentation is cool enough to keep things going. So it can still be a positive experience. I'm not mad in the least, I'm glad he's reading Japanese and getting better. It can be a little sad to see newbs underestimate just how much their bad Japanese is fucking with games, but I'm not lame enough to get sincerely bothered by people using their free time to play things they're excited about.

tl;dr It's just banter m8

Traditional Japanese grammarians describe the process of unvoiced sibilant vowel reduction as the vowel being articulated but not voiced, but modern phoneticians analyzing recordings and articulatory data find that in many cases the vowel is not articulated at all, not even in the mouth. It's true that in many cases and for many speakers, the vowel is always articulated but unvoiced, but this is no longer a universal description.

Many young speakers and singers also have a mental distinction between "vowels that are articulated, but not voiced" and "vowels that are not articulated at all" for some reason. (Possibly because of influence from loanwords from languages with more consonant clusters, or compulsory English education getting better, or just globalization. Can't say exactly why, but it's happening.)

It's at a point were, when singing, things like はやく and ていく are sometimes sung like "hayak" and "teik", depending on the style of the song. This would be blocked by phonotactic restrictions if they were thinking of the "u" as a weak, but still articulated, vowel.

People who continue to insist that the "the vowel dropped / not articulated" understanding of the phenomenon is wrong are working off of an outdated theory.

There was no online ecelebs, just underground af ajatt which I thought was a scam at the time. There was youtube videoes of people saying they moved to japan and lived there for over 15 years and still hadn't gotten fluent and he basically said it's an impossible language. No japanese subs for anything, everything even. I had pretty much said fuck this. Then out of nowhere thousands of things started coming out a couple years ago and then I refound ajatt and heard tons of success stories in relatively short periods of aquiring the language. the only things you need to consciously understand about pitch accent

1) a "word" only has a single downstep, and no explicit upstep
2) compounding and particles affect the pitch accent of the resulting compound or phrase
3) stress exists, but it emerges from pitch accenting, not the other way around like english where pitch changes emerge from the stress accent
4) when words have multiple acceptable locations for the downstep, either they're used by different people (this is what it is most of the time) or they mean slightly different things (usually only with compound words)
5) anglophones can learn pitch accent naturally just fine, you just have to actually listen to enough japanese for your brain to start noticing and cataloging it. the hard part is learning the pitch accents of individual words, rather than phrases.

things that are useful to avoid misinterpreting the "theory" of pitch accent being a bunch of downsteps

1) japanese still has sentence-level intonation
2) there are still upsteps, they just emerge from sentence-level intonation and emphasis
3) for plain old statements, sentence-level intonation generally has a rising then falling shape, and usually ends somewhere below where it started
4) mixing pitch accent systems from different dialects isn't actually going to be a problem since they share an underlying logic and are hard to mix accidentally unless you don't actually know japanese in the first place
5) the tendency for words to gradually rise in pitch before the downstep is a property of words being pronounced in isolation, it is often a sharp upstep or a flat line in actual speech depending on the rhythm and in what locations emphasis is being placed

I don't understand the contrived issue of accent. The measure of skill should be how well you can craft moist sentences in the language, accent does not matter. I have had many brilliant professors with poor accents, and have met many people with "perfect" accents who have less than middle school level literacy. I mean matt and his kind are a non-entity who mean nothing to me, but genuinely do not understand the obsession with accent.

Is is because autism which means they will never reach someone at an emotional level, so they resort to a pointless measure of their medal.

Honestly I don't think people will ever be able to sound natural on the fly, maybe with intense vocal training you can sound natural in short pre-rehearsed segments but not with speaking normally. I mean I have never met someone who has managed that in english, so it seems natural it would be the same for japanese. I think my be the hardest pill to swallow for many people trying to learn japanese. people think the short rehearsed bits by dogen and matt sound good but most people who think this don't actually know japanese. and that one japanese guy who did videos critiquing them would always mention small bits of accent mistakes, but when I hear a non-native english speaker everything they say, no matter how good they are, sounds off, and I could not imagine critiqueing any individual thing they say. I am aware I have an american accent in japanese but I simply do not care, as the words I say are what matter.

like ppl start to pick up accents if they spent extensive time somewhere and this can be to ur benefit in japanese as well but its fine to always sound like u come from somewhere else cuz u do and being true to urself is the #1 way to fast track ur success with japanese

I've always said that my main hobby is Japanese itself, and anime and games and shit are just an extension of that. since I didn't become a weeb until after I started learning the language, it's sort of true, although obviously the weeb shit was the big motivator for me to improve. but I think the people who really succeed are people who see learning the language not just as a way to access other things but as an end unto itself
tl;dr learning is inherently fun who knew but I still don't do anki that shit sucks

Actually as it turns out from research by Asher, the brain finds stuff that works in language learning (and other learning) pleasing. So actually if you're having a boring time then what you're doing probably isn't even working anyway.

Obvious stuff that nobody thinks about.

I definitely got into contact with Japanese things before I started on the language, but I didn't just start learning the language to access content I couldnt previously (not a big issue really), but I really like the language. I actually like it even more now that I speak and understand more and more of it.

There is a reason professionals would never switch to his ideas. It's the equivelant to Timothy Leary telling everybody to take acid in the 70's. Sounded good in theory only. He had basically found a few new grains of truth and tried to make a whole religion around it. In practice krashen's theories fail and the students fail miserably thanks to him.
