Fuck off EoSDshitter. Embodiment of Scarlet Devil may be the greatest case of overrating an old installment of a long running franchise. In general, ZUN has only improved over time. The art and character design in EoSD is drastically worse than modern installments, and the gameplay is archaic. The music is the only factor of the franchise that has always been consistently high quality, other than that it has had to come a long way up from a pretty low starting point in terms of quality to get to where it is now.

It's possible to respect an older work that eventually lead to newer, more improved works as a sort of cornerstone for a series despite it being flawed when compared to the newer works. It was good in its time, and it still plays decently now.

no, ZUN art declined in quality. look at HSiFS and tell me that is not a huge downgrade from EoSD-PCB level.
EoSD cast works so well because they allow for lots of active interaction between characters, compare them to boring passive cast in DDC and later games, like Waggysaggy, Kagerou, Benben and her partner whose insignificant name I struggle to recall, titty /ss/ knife 2hu, that strawhat dork - they have no room for intercharacter action, they just exist there.

As far as mainline games go, the original windows trilogy (EoSD, PCB, IN) have the best gameplay in the series. Later games are dragged down by things like glowshit, bad/lazy bullet patterns, and questionable scoring systems. Partial exceptions being MoF and UFO.

Alot of older games have this too, like Rumia, Letty, the Prismrivers, the list goes on. Every game has some characters that just dont do much but its not an inherent problem with the characters themselves. The issue with alot of newer characters isnt that they can't have alot of interactions and be highly active, its just that they dont. The main issue does go back to ZUN, and that issue is that he just hasnt done anything with them. The EoSD cast appeared alot, which really helps solidify their popularity. The popularity (or rather lack thereof) and general problem with the newer characters is that ZUN just doesnt do much beyond simply introducing them. Okina is the biggest example of this, having been built up to be some new important force in Gensokyo only to appear in like one WaHH chapter after HSiFS.
Im kinda rambling but my point is that the characters themselves arent really better or worse on a design and conceptual level than the older games. ZUN just hasnt given them the chance to shine.

Yeah, I heavily agree. I find most of the new characters in recent games extremely charming and great. The issue is that none of them fucking show up. The reason why EoSD, PCB, and IN are so popular is because they take characters from past games and make it feel connected. EoSD was all new. But Sakuya showed up in PCB, Alice returns from PC-98, then in IN you had the fucking team of characters that is still iconic as fuck. Nowadays that shit doesn't happen. Everything feels so cut off from the rest sometimes that it becomes jarring. Like I wish more of the IN cast showed up in LoLK since it had to do with the moon. The only really recurring characters of late is fucking Aya and Sanae.
