21013995 No.21013995 [Reply] [Original]

Since people requested one in the VN General, here's an attempt to get an LN General running.

This thread is only for the discussion of untranslated Japanese light novels.

What are you reading? Anything to look forward to? What have you finished? Anything you want to recommend to others?

I'd say because there are plenty of other communities that already discuss translated LNs and could narrow down the type of discussion to have here.
/jp/ has a lot of Japanese speakers, so it's the ideal place to discuss LNs in Japanese.
But all in all I don't really care that much. If this thread isn't sustainable, someone can try doing a pure LN general.

This line is already stupid and confusing in the eroge general because it doesn't convey the actual intent. It means you read in Japanese, not that there isn't any sort of translation out there.

What does your backlog looks like?
Mine looks this:
-Danmachi, only began volume 1 a year ago.
-anti magic academy, finished volume 1. I put it off for a while now because I found that volume 1 was too cliche for a battle harem, nothing really stood out. But I heard that it really picks up afterwards so I'll stick.
-rokujuma, didn't even start reading a single volume. But I love harem and apparently this is one of the best.
-no game no life. Only one I'm reading actively, Up to volume 7 by now.
-harui suzumiya. Currently reading volume 5. I've gotten pretty slow reading this one, once the nostalgia from the anime wore off it just felt like some average sci-fi. I'm not saying it's shitty but I'm getting bored. I'm probably going to drop this one once I finish this volume.
-arifureta. Didn't even begin this one either, I plan on once I'm done with no game no life.
-oregairu. Didn't start either, I even went as far as avoiding the anime to read it. But lately I'm hesitating on reading the novel as some of 8man's citations shared on /a/ makes him look like some edgelord.
-classroom of the elite. I fucking love this one, probably my favorite, I'm up to volume 8 but plan on picking it up once the novel gets to volume 12 as I hate having to wait for a new volume. But I'm getting kind of impatient so I probably won't even wait for that long.
-konosuba volume 12. I feel like the novel is getting more and more boring, but I'll try and keep on reading until volume 15 to see if it gets more interesting.
-goblin slayer volume 4. After no game no life it's the other one I'm reading actively (I only have two active ln as I'm pretty busy with my classes lately). For now it's mainly side stories.
-inoue battle become common place, finished reading volume 1 last month and to my suprise I enjoyed it even more than the anime.

If anyone as any suggestion now I'm searching for some dark/psychological novel. Where the characters have psychological disorders.

Recently started reading Kino no Tabi, which will probably take me quite some while.
Otherwise there's still Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, NetoYome, Tate no Yusha and Majo no Tabitabi (this one seems to be promising, giving that it gives off some sort of Kino no Tabi vibe) waiting for me.
Still a bunch of other stuff I want to read at some point, mainly stuff I've watched an anime version of years ago, but given that LNs tend to have a minimum of 10 volumes per series it proved to be quite difficult to catch up.

Girly Air Force is one of my favorite series, but I'm an aviation nerd so the premise is right up my alley. The author is a big military aviation otaku too so he puts a lot of effort into that aspect of it. I'd recommend it if you're a miliota, YMMV otherwise but there's still some good sci-fi in there. It's an interesting twist on the old 正体不明謎の敵 plot. There's actually an anime of it airing this season but it's a pretty poor adaptation unfortunately

I usually order in bulk from Mandarake; the books are cheap enough on there that with shipping it usually is still cheaper than buying the equivalent ebooks at full price. For certain things I can't wait for (like GAF) I'll just order off CDJapan new and eat the shipping despite it doubling the price of the book

I was reading the novel 俺の現実は恋愛ゲーム?? on ninarou until it got a manga adaptation.
But I dislike many aspect of this adaptation like the protagonist being less daring and some scenes being cut.
It's one of the things I don't like with adaptations they always make everything more mainstream and acceptable.
For example there was a scene where the mc tricked 氷上 into kissing him with his tongue and they fucking cut it.

There's a picture set from 2007-2008 which, upon further investigation, was originally sold as an "HTML novel + pictures".

Is this a common format? Are there even places where this kind of shit can be found? Panda and Sukebei had it, but only the pictures.

There isn't really such a thing as a "novel around N3 level" since the JLPT levels are contrivances for foreign learners and all novels are written for native speakers.

That said, some books are easier to read than others. The easiest LN author I've read is Fushimi Tsukasa, so you could try some Eromanga-Sensei or Oreimo.

The simple fact of the matter is that almost all professionally published long-form Japanese prose is "just normal Japanese", and none of it will be particularly easy compared to the rest to people with poor Japanese.

All you can do is avoid things that are going to use lots of unique technical words, like hard science fiction, politics, and 純粋ななろう系.

There are a few series that are "famous" for using simple language, but it's not a significant difference. You just have to keep reading Japanese until "difficulty" stops being a factor.

Ask for stuff that's good, not stuff that's easy.

By the way read エロマンガ先生.

What confused me at the end was the true nature of the game and the other world. At first I thought it was something like SAO Alicization or the Matrix but then when the "game" was revealed to be another world I was confused why it could be manipulated by AIs from Earth. Then at the end the MC somehow gets all the magic elements as superpowers back in the real world.

Yeah for sure, it was never properly explained and left to interpretation, but at the very least there definitely seemed to be some kind of a soul link or something similar established between the worlds, for example even between クロイ and our MC before he started streaming the DX version when he had that dream which prompted him to start the game in the first place. I really don't understand the appeal of reading light novels in translation. If I'm going to read in English there are are so many amazing things to read besides some ESL Malaysian translator's attempt at isekai narou novel #42069. At least with manga you can look at the art, with eroge you can listen to the voices and look at the CGs, etc.

I always wanted to read LNs but I didn't start until I learned enough Japanese to do so. Reading translations seemed like a waste of my ability to read English.

I've been reading the 転生したら剣でした WN (it has an LN adaptation as well) and I'm completely glued to the screen. This is probably just because it's the first competent なろう系 I've read in pure text, meaning that it's probably just the honeymoon effect, and I'm not very far in, so things might change, but pretty much everything that's happened so far has been riveting or fucking hilarious.
