How do I respond to this?

>> No.20982110

Okay guys, I have a question. In context to learning Japanese, would you rather go deaf or blind?

If you were blind, you'd never have to deal with kanji ever again. You just need to learn the Braille kana.

If you were deaf, you'd never have to deal with listening comprehension.

>> No.20982131

It's made that way so it's easier to learn because there are less strokes per character. The characters look completely different from the traditional ones, which makes it a completely different set that you have to re-learn.

yea its easy as fuck desu. you just have to remember the simplified variations of common radicals like all 訁 turn into 讠 etc. you still need to learn another few thousand characters tho

>> No.20982256

>>20982234
On the other hand, once you learn "the characters" (which is easy RTH-style), learning the meanings and readings is a whole lot easier because:
* almost all hanzi have only one reading
* all readings are monosyllabic
* almost all characters are strongly phono-semantic

Speaking of phono-semantic; I know that *some* of this survives in Japanese for the On'yomi, and based on what's in https://namakajiri.net/nikki/testing-the-power-of-phonetic-components-in-japanese-kanji/ I was considering making an Anki deck using their highlighted "best sequences", to be used to supplement the natural process of learning the readings while just learning vocab.

There are two issues with the deck which are easy to fix:

1) One of the サイ entries is missing the link to the .mp3 - thankfully you can just copy the existing one.
2) For a lot of entries, you're shown a full Kanji, but the phonetic component is only a subset of it, the answer side saying "remove the left component" or whatever. If you use a resource like wiktionary, you can get the actual CJK composition characters for just the relevant part, which makes it a lot easier.

step1: learn kana (2 weeks)
step2: become familiar with radicals and kanji, go through a kanji frequency list to become familiar with the fundamental shit (~5days). Review kana every day
step3: get through the first few sections of TK, learn as many words as you can. The goal is to get fundamental grammar down and understanding some sentences 100% without looking anything (~1-2 weeks, don't do the last section and don't learn everything by heart)
step 3.5: start actually learning your first kanji. Go through https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky%C5%8Diku_kanji#First_grade_.2880_kanji.29 instead of a frequency list (aim for at least 20 the first day, 15 the second and 10 from the third day onwards)
step 4: Start reading and listening. Don't do children books. Repeat until fluent.
step 4.5: If you ever feel overwhelmed or frustrated because of poor retention, you can give tools like RTK or mining a try. Sentence mining can be very benificial for sentences you understand from 90% up to 100%, anything under than that is inefficient. Never EVER mindlessly grind a vocab list

- You've only been at it for one week, unless you're some kind of genius the majority of what you've learned so far is only present in your short-term memory. Give it one or two weeks and your brain will be a mess because of the amount of information you have to recall, your retention will go further and further down

>Nah, friendo, I can totally handle it. Ever heard my mom? She says I am pretty damn smart.

Didn't we have an asshole in last thread who has been doing 50 kanji and 100 fucking words per day for 3 weeks saying that he'll be just fine?

This will be controversial but it works. I’ve seen for myself.

1. Read and listen to a lot of stuff that has some words you don’t know yet.
2. Look up each word you want to learn, and mentally pinpoint which definition best matches the context you saw the word in. Only choose one. This is your “tag”.
3. Add those words to an SRS of your choosing, whichever makes it easiest to input word+reading+definition quickly.
3. When you do your reviews, only actively try to memorize the reading. Get the reading down pat. Say it to yourself a few times. Be able to recall it. Even write it if you want.
4. For the definition, the only thing you have to do is recognize the one definition that matched the context you saw the word in, the tag. Then upon that recognition of your tag, say the word’s reading again. This part is critical. DO NOT ACTIVELY TRY TO RECALL THE DEFINITION before flipping over the card. Just make sure you are able to recall the reading, flip over the card, recognize your tag, and acknowledge that recognition by saying the reading of the Japanese word again to build that mental link.

At some point (it might be sooner than you think) you’ll start to look at the word, recall the reading, and the definition will naturally pop into your head without flipping the card over yet. That’s the effortless part. You cement the reading, make the meaning association by repeated recognition only, and your subconscious does the rest. The next time you see the word in a similar context, the reading will be solid, and the definition you repeatedly recognized during reviews, will pop out at you.

More reviews, less time, less effort, more gains! And more time for reading.

Thank me later, pups.

Hello guys! My name is Calvin. I am 21 years old and I currently attend university. My goals is to reach a very high level of fluency in Mandarin Chinese. I started learning two days ago on 3/10/2019. This is not my first rodeo with MIA/AJATT. I actually tried learning Japanese before, but I realized that it was not what I wanted to learn. I was simply trying to complete an objective I set for myself back when I was a child. Because of this, my journey with Japanese was incredibly rocky. I hated it ultimately. Being honest with myself and stopping was one of the best things I could have ever done for myself. I am now learning a language that I ACTUALLY want to learn as a 21 year old male. It is so exciting. I love Chinese Youtubers, so that will be my main source of immersion. However, I am going to branch out to other stuff like dramas and movies. Glad to meet all of you and I hope you all reach your language learning goals!

If you don't want to be a little girl in a cute dress, you're lacking the "Femiklashterene" hormone necessary to fully acquire Japanese. This hormone is typically deactivated in men during puberty, which is why native Japanese men can still learn Japanese, but once deactivated, it becomes nearly impossible to learn to intuitively understand Japanese pragmatics, permanently crippling your ability to keep the 和 in balance. The only way to reactivate it again is to become a shut-in and consume porn several times per day, self-inserting as the girl every time. If you're a girl then you need to do the same thing, but only because the hormone's production is dramatically weakened.

listening improves the quality of your vocab knowledge. makes the words come alive in the spoken dimension. helps solidify them in your noggin more and familiarizes you with native-like pronunciation of the words. its very helpful to get lots of japanese audio in your brain.

japanese subs are good but they kind of give you the answer? you don't have to listen for the japanese as hard because it's written right there. to use an analogy, its like tracing.

with english subs though even though you have a translation which makes it seem easy, if you actually use them right, you still have to actually figure out what's being said in japanese each time (and sometimes thats pretty different from the eng subs). it's more like looking at a pic then trying to copy it without tracing. i'd experiment with both kinds of subs and see what you find from experience.

i was getting a stable 40-50 reviews a few months after finishing RTK 1 instead of 10-20 because i was forgetting mature cards, and i was forgetting them mainly because i would forget which story a given keyword connected to. that's the downside of doing RTK without knowing words associated with all of the jouyou kanji. if i went back and did RTK right now i wouldn't forget mature cards as much because i could put kana words on the front of the card and vaguely remember the shape of the kanji due to my exposure to them through reading and recall the story from there.

i was so sick of RTK that i was getting distracted and taking 20-30 minutes to finish the reviews. moreover i wanted to start mining grammar/vocab while reading and it's annoying having to juggle decks. the benefit of being able to distinguish kanji developed around 500-1000 in, so doing all 2200 of them was a huge waste of time. i don't have problems distinguishing kanji nowadays. i just can't write them, which means that i'm effectively at the same level of familiarity with kanji as someone who did lazy kanji. so i know someone could just do 500-1000 lazy kanji and be able to easily acquire vocabulary.

RTK is legit.

But Core*K is simply wrong. That's not how you learn a language, by studying words in isolation.

Now Core2K isn't a problem because it's like a month of study, and you get a powerful head start.

But after that you gotta move to real stuff, like reading/watching stuff and mining sentences in the i+1 way.

Grammar is optional at best. English language Japanese grammar books are a good source of example sentences for mining, but otherwise they're useless. Return to grammar when you're fluent, if you want some niche clarifications.

the default mode network being more efficient would mean performing the same activity (activating habitual thought patterns) with less energy expenditure, yet the activation of habitual thought patterns in people is consistently self-reported as being reduced in meditation subjects who's MRIs show reduced activity in the DMN. so i guess according to you, they're all falsely reporting and meditation is making their DMN's BETTER at habitual uncontrolled thought. which would mean that you have no basis on which to claim "meditation is real", since MRIs and self-reports are all nonsense. hmm.

>>Unless you have people with neurostructural disorders to compare with
MRI's of people with neurostructural disorders don't exist?

>>You didn't read it. You ctrl+f'd through it after googling "meditation default mode network" and clicking the top result. You're not very good at this.
i read the article, and i have multiple times in the past... because i actually have experience with meditation and the science behind it. you didn't read it, its findings state the exact opposite of what you're saying.

There was a troll comment left on my video basically making fun of the fact that I quit Japanese and how things aren't going to change with Chinese. This comment kind of stung. There was also another troll comment asking me what happened to AJATT and if I gained weight or not. Both of these comments were deleted. I don't want negativity on my channel. However, I think next time I am just gonna let those comments stay and not even bother with deleting them. I gotta grow some thicker skin and realize that trolls are just trolls. After feeling someone sad from these comments, I began to have thoughts of "I'm gonna prove these idiots wrong". But I quickly stopped myself from having those thoughts as well. dullness can be a bitch sometimes. it usually means you need to meditate soon after getting enough sleep or doing some exercise to wake up the body. simply strengthening your intention to deepen attention can make a big difference too.

but slipping into dullness can also be a subconscious defense against confronting more deeply buried emotions. i asked if you cried because getting past stage four almost certainly requires opening up enough to release repressed stuff... and if you're the kind of guy who won't let himself cry/has a history of holding back tears a lot, it's possible that's what held you back from going all the way in that emotional moment or other potential ones.

just sharing what i've seen, it's not by force that you go back to meditation but as someone who's gotten past that stage it's definitely worth it. piti and jhana are really legit. it can literally feel like taking a hit (or several) of really good drugs, except without the whole "destroying your body and brain" effect lol.

Craving acceptance can come in many forms. Any arguing that is hostile is an inner craving for validation, wanting to be right. There's nothing wrong with wanting to correct someone if you think they're saying something incorrect, but it can be done without aggression or trying to belittle them.

It's easy to get triggered if you sense aggression in the other person. But it isn't skillful to act on it. Instead try to notice it, breathe, and respond wisely.

>>20988839
Yes, when someone tries hard to convince someone of something, instead of calmly stating their perspective and being open to the other person's, it's a sign of unexamined inner turmoil. But craving acceptance can come in more than just that form.

If the other person responds aggressively or with ill will, they also become involved in projecting their own insecurity. It becomes a ruthless battle, with hidden shame and fears driving it all (not good enough, not smart enough, my intelligence is being threatened). The only solution is at least one party recognizing what is happening and disengaging from any desire to convince the other person of anything. Even better if one or both parties is able to access a genuine sense of well-wishing towards the other.
