This. SRW has no gameplay, it only appeals to people who like to watch the same flashy attacks over and over. Though, that explains why it's such a hit to people who like super robots, they're used to seeing lots stock footage. The story is also a mess that just serves to please fans. The point is the STRATEGY. That's the gameplay. The visual effects and theme songs are just for the nice after taste.
I doubt anyone keeps the animations after seeing them a few times.

There's a fundamental difference: SRW is a game, Visual novels are picture books that require a reading comprehension higher than grade school. The gameplay in SRW is shit, whereas the vast majority of VNs have no gameplay and instead focuses entirely on the story. The story in SRW focuses entirely on fanservice and working in a couple dozen series to atleast try to make sense, even if it involve plot-devicing them in with gates. The average english-speaking player of SRW doesn't even understand enough Japanese to read the story, they just want to see their favorite robots all over again. Naturally the stories of VNs vary greatly, but there are some shining examples. And before you eagerly call them all shit, I doubt you would call Muv-Luv Alternative shit.
