This is a Japanese language learning thread for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, Japanese video games, and bangers.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.
https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/
Old guide for those afraid of change:
https://djtguide.neocities.org/

Remember: you DON'T WANT to give up learning Japanese.

Don't let this leave the thread... I don't want any redditors, AJATTers, MIAers, SGJLers, or other troublemakers and rabble-rousers finding out about my method. Here it goes, typically when I want to gauge the level of japanese in an anime, or any type of content for that matter, I just watch it or read it and see if I can understand some of it. If I can understand enough of it that it keeps my interest I continue watching or reading. If I don't, then I get bored and stop.

This method has NEVER once failed me.

i want to learn how to write because i think its a good way to cement what i know and make forgetting kanji harder, but writing is sliterally the most boring shit ever. I literally cannot stand writing kanji over and over again.

is it possible to reach fluency without writing shitton?

You can't use 倒す like that. Just like in English you wouldn't say "to fall the sky", you would use another verb, like "to fell the sky".
Similarly, 空に倒れさせる makes no sense because the sky cannot be made to 倒す itself.

To use another example, while "destroy" isn't exactly the same as 倒す, grammatically it's a good fit.
"空を倒す” to destroy the sky
”空に倒れさせる” to make the sky destroy (destroy WHAT?)

grammar patterns are the foundation of grammar and the underlying intuition is developed as a result of naturally learning enough of the right grammar patterns (and i mean from seeing them used, not from a textbook or dictionary or handbook or guide)
that underlying intuition comes from how patterns interact with the lexicon, as they form a syntax and morphology, tied to the intonation and rhythm of natural speech
everything in language is somewhat deeply interconnected and nobody actually understands every single aspect of any particular part of it, all you can do is read/listen more once you are able to do so (which is a lot sooner than you think!), worrying about grammar past the absolute beginner stage just means that you fucked up somewhere or you have anxiety problems

The next round of improvements will focus on nailing down these common mis-recognitions via simple text-replacement rules. Hopefully, these issues will also reduce in frequency as I move Kaku to Tesseract 4 in the future as well.

It's, as you may have already thought, a catch 22 where you have to already be at a decent enough level of Japanese to accurately gauge what level is being used in an anime (or anything else for that matter). The only other way around it is by having a Japanese person tell you or someone who is good enough at Japanese, which you could possibly get, but highly unlikely imo. Idk what level you're at, but if you can't yet gauge for yourself, then just don't worry about it too much and go with what feels right. That's really all you can do.

>> No.20928128

lol frankly even if the anime has the clock in the corner theres really no way to separate media for japanese into media for japanese that is somehow more comprehensible to a gaijin on average this shit is a delusion

ur best hope is literally watching jp dubbed western shows like x men or south park cuz then at least u know where it coming from and its the japanese that sucks at translating x]

>> No.20928318

If I can understand enough of it that it keeps my interest I continue watching or reading. If I don't, then I get bored and stop.

This method has NEVER once failed me.

this... sounds like a really wise method. thank you for the simple and sensible technique! i'm going to be using this from now on instead of torturing myself to read/watch things above my level.

i think a lot of us fuck ourselves over by seeing something and thinking "i SHOULD understand this by now" and trying to force it when we can't and we're not enjoying it.

>> i want to learn how to write because i think its a good way to cement what i know and make forgetting kanji harder, but writing is sliterally the most boring shit ever. I literally cannot stand writing kanji over and over again.

heres what's working pretty awesomely for me!:

1. learn to write the "radicals"/pieces of kanji in the correct stroke order (you can use animations of full kanji for reference, look at how each piece of the kanji is written and copy that). the official radicals (used for looking up in dictionaries and shit) are 214 but if you include literally all the pieces that appear in every kanji (some just being simple kanji themselves), its more like 300 or so. practice writing those while learning nicknames for them, like the ones wanikani uses or kanjidamage, or make up your own, or a combo of both like i did.

2. do "lazy kanji", where you write each kanji word that appears in your anki deck of choice (can be just from customized sentence/vocab mining) ONCE every time you review it. just once per review.

those things together will make writing kanji a breeze because you'll train your brain/eyes/hand to focus on the RADICALS/PIECES rather than the one by one stroke order for each kanji. that will make both writing and remembering easier.

of course you could just go with the "self-correcting" strategy where you continue to read until your notion of a certain meaning is eventually confirmed or refuted in which case it needs to be adjusted, but that's much slower than getting immediate feedback on whether you're understanding correctly or not whenever you're uncertain
obviously this only works if you actually try hard to figure out the japanese before you look at the translation, basically pretending you don't have access to it
i went through some bilingual short story collections and they've helped me tremendously

its a dictionary. the usage case is you see a random grammar point you dont understand and you look it up. it's useful for that. you can also go through it entirely 1 by 1 if you like, since pretty much every grammar point in there is commonly used.

>> No.20931884

>>20931866
>buying
no if you're going to buy a physical grammar book get A Handbook of Japanese Grammar Patterns instead, it's a single volume, much easier to navigate as a physical object, and contains less spatial bloat

having said that you should really just pirate these things

point 2: you're not supposed to "read" this type of grammar resource, it's for reading about things you encounter but don't understand the logic behind, or opening up to a random page and brushing up on the first thing that sticks out to you flipping through it
