Don't let this leave the thread... I don't want any redditors, AJATTers, MIAers, SGJLers, or other troublemakers and rabble-rousers finding out about my method. Here it goes, typically when I want to gauge the level of japanese in an anime, or any type of content for that matter, I just watch it or read it and see if I can understand some of it. If I can understand enough of it that it keeps my interest I continue watching or reading. If I don't, then I get bored and stop.

i want to learn how to write because i think its a good way to cement what i know and make forgetting kanji harder, but writing is sliterally the most boring shit ever. I literally cannot stand writing kanji over and over again.

I'm currently doing a lazy KKLC right now (800 kanji in) only basically simulating the stroke order when they come up in anki but i feel like it's not enough.

is it possible to reach fluency without writing shitton?

i cant say but probably not but a lot of languages are easier to understand as a native english speaker and japanese isnt one of them u need time and familiarity and if ur at home at moms house the quality of ur input is so low u need quite a bit of it to really get in the mix and become a well rounded nihongoer

Instead of morphman and all the bullshit people bring into something so simple, what you should really do is mine like 2k+ of words, then in the fields for the definitions have it put japanese def then english. Try to understand the japanese first if you get stuck on words then yomichan them and add them too. After about 500 or so of these words too you should be good. That's what I did. Then I took it a step further and made just audio deck and when I hear a word I define it in japanese.

The test for my first language is horrendous. It's clearly not even designed by humans, but uses the English test literally translated instead. The question for the antonym of catalyst for example is translated to katalysator which is a fucking car part. I'm sure the antonym would still be the Dutch equivalent of prevent. You can't use 倒す like that. Just like in English you wouldn't say "to fall the sky", you would use another verb, like "to fell the sky".
Similarly, 空に倒れさせる makes no sense because the sky cannot be made to 倒す itself.

To use another example, while "destroy" isn't exactly the same as 倒す, grammatically it's a good fit.
"空を倒す” to destroy the sky
”空に倒れさせる” to make the sky destroy (destroy WHAT?)

Do remember that Kaku was only released 2 months ago. Since then I been focused on features (mainly Instant Mode). The next round of improvements will focus on nailing down these common mis-recognitions via simple text-replacement rules. And yeah, I didn't write the recognition engine, so that's kinda a black box to me.

Hopefully, these issues will also reduce in frequency as I move Kaku to Tesseract 4 in the future as well.

It's, as you may have already thought, a catch 22 where you have to already be at a decent enough level of Japanese to accurately gauge what level is being used in an anime (or anything else for that matter). The only other way around it is by having a Japanese person tell you or someone who is good enough at Japanese, which you could possibly get, but highly unlikely imo. heres what's working pretty awesomely for me!:

1. learn to write the "radicals"/pieces of kanji in the correct stroke order (you can use animations of full kanji for reference, look at how each piece of the kanji is written and copy that). the official radicals (used for looking up in dictionaries and shit) are 214 but if you include literally all the pieces that appear in every kanji (some just being simple kanji themselves), its more like 300 or so. practice writing those while learning nicknames for them, like the ones wanikani uses or kanjidamage, or make up your own, or a combo of both like i did.

2. do "lazy kanji", where you write each kanji word that appears in your anki deck of choice (can be just from customized sentence/vocab mining) ONCE every time you review it. just once per review.

those things together will make writing kanji a breeze because you'll train your brain/eyes/hand to focus on the RADICALS/PIECES rather than the one by one stroke order for each kanji. that will make both writing and remembering easier.
