While LoLK is indeed harder than previous games, ithe game also gives you the tools to make it easily beatable (if you're a decent touhou player - if you're a filthy secondary you'll just have to git gud).
Play Reisen. Each bomb equals 3 additional misses, and each life equals 3 bombs. Do the math. Also, if you learn to graz without needing to go too crazy you can get about 3 lives per stage quite easily, more if you master each stage but I never put in the time.
