I've noticed that the common opinion of anime with English subtitles is that they are completely useless for learning and you might as well just watch the English dub.

As someone who watches a lot of anime with or without Japanese subtitles, as well as occasionally English subtitles (ratio is like 2:2:1, respectively), I disagree with that stance. It simply hasn't been my experience. If your listening skill has been decently trained already, I do not think anime with English subtitles has to be useless. In some specific cases it might even be preferable, depending on your level. Here are my thoughts from experience:

You can still pick up new vocabulary. If your listening skill is keen enough, you can pick up new words from listening even if the subtitles are in English, and add them to anki if you want. There's literally nothing stopping you from doing this. In an episode of Mob Psycho II I watched today, I picked up the word 握力 from listening. The subtitle said something about "grip power" and I heard あくりょく. From the english clue and my knowledge of 把握、握手、~力 etc, I could instantly predict what that particular word meant, and what the kanji would be. And I was right. This kind of thing can happen multiple times in one episode.

If the anime is too hard for you to watch raw/j-subbed and actually follow along, you have ample scaffolding to allow for picking up words and phrases in context like I described in point 1. Let's say theoretically, out of a 450-line show, at your current level of grammar and vocab knowledge, you'd understand 200 lines either mostly or completely if they were in isolation.
If you watch the entire thing raw, it is unlikely you'd even get those 200 lines, because there would be so much ambiguity surrounding them (the other 250 that sound like gibberish because they just have too much new vocab or complex grammar) for you to make sense of the parts you WOULD have understood. Just like with reading, you have to know enough of what's happening in the context to benefit. Too many unknowns will prevent you from learning anything. There are three options in this kind of situation:
1.) Don't watch the show at all until your Japanese is good enough to understand most of it without subtitles, which might take another few years. Some people do choose this route though, and I suppose it's valid for those who are very hardcore.
2.) Watch with English subs, absorb your attention only into the engsub, and forget about Japanese completely. The default route for those who assume that engsubs necessarily render the anime useless for learning.
3.) Watch with English subs, using the English as a scaffolding for the story as you tune your ears for whatever Japanese you *can* understand, make sense of and learn from.

You can use your pre-existing knowledge to see how localization/translation changed the original message. Being able to recognize when the Japanese is saying one thing, and the English sub is saying another slightly, or even completely different thing, is GOOD. Looking out for such differences can be an interesting listening exercise in itself, and can help reinforce your understanding that translations/localizations are often approximations of what's truly being said.

You still have a chance to hear Japanese. Unlike with dubs, there is still spoken Japanese playing. And depending on how polished your listening skill already is, it is likely that you will be able to hear words, phrases, or entire sentences you already know, reinforcing them. This happens hundreds of times per episode for me, and its especially nice when it's a word or phrase I've recently learned, or hadn't heard in a long time and needed refreshing.
It's widely parroted on here that your brain will always take "the easiest route" by blocking out all Japanese audio in favor for the English text. But that just hasn't been the case in my experience at all. Perhaps it's because the majority of my listening is raw so my brain is now attuned to hearing the Japanese, and because I have the intention to listen for it, I'm able to hear many words and phrases, often adding things I pick up (n+1) to my anki deck. Any Japanese you can hear and successfully process is useful to some degree.

Those are my thoughts on the issue. Ultimately, shows that are well-catered to your vocab and grammar level, with no subs or Japanese subs, are ideal for the most learning. But we all know that not all the shows we want to watch match our current level. I wanted to share how it's possible to still gain something from shows that fall into that category. Thanks for reading!

I started learning Japanese 9 months ago as a self-learner. I have used almost just apps, mainly Lingodeer and Kanji Study. I have taken the N5 test in December (and passed). In preparation to that I’ve also taken a few 1-to-1 lessons and completed an excellent book (Try! N5). However, I focused on the N5 just to have a goal, conscious that my speaking and reading skills would not be as good. I recently started taking Skype lessons on Italki and I realised (unsurprisingly) that I struggle with even basic vocabulary and grammar when I have to talk or write things up from zero. I have studied all the N5 grammar and beyond, but I don’t know it enough to use it confidently (unless I’m solving exercises on Lingodeer or so). I think I might need a textbook to help "cement" the grammar. Would Genki be the best choice for me, even though I mostly need to reinforce the grammar points? My italki teacher uses Genki for exercises, but I’m slightly frustrated that I’d have to start “from zero” with Genki. Do you think Genki is still the best choice for me or shall I get something else, even just an exercise book of some sort? Considering that I mostly study in my commute and I'll keep using Lingodeer and other apps much more frequently than any textbook.

the problem w/ english subtitles is if you aren't a retard it's hard to stop yourself from reading them the instant they appear, and it'll fuck up your listening because obviously japanese sentences are often translated back to front to suit english grammar. so you'll be hearing the start of a sentence as you read the end in english

Honestly this whole perfect accent thing is a bit obsessive in my opinion. Assuming you do get that perfect accent, you won't maintain it unless you live in an environment where all you speak is Japanese all day long. It's not something that you "get" and then it stays with you forever. Unless you know for sure you're gonna live in Japan, and really need that perfect accent, it's not worth it. Pretty much on point. Also the benefit is basically non existent. If you're not looking Japanese you're not fooling anyone either way. Other foreigners won't be able to tell the difference between a pretty good accent and a perfect accent and the Japanese might think that you're a bit weird for speaking Japanese without much of an accent but it's nothing more than a shitty parlor trick to them.

People will be far more impressed by an extensive vocabulary and hardly any grammatical mistakes, even if you have a noticeable accent.

How anyone could reasonably invest years of their life into trying to perfect their pronunciation of all things is beyond me.

Watching English-spoken films with subtitles is becoming increasingly popular throughout
the world. One reason for this trend is the assumption that perceptual learning of the sounds
of a foreign language, English, will improve perception skills in non-English speakers. Yet,
solid proof for this is scarce. In order to test the potential learning effects derived from watch-
ing subtitled media, a group of intermediate Spanish students of English as a foreign lan-
guage watched a 1h-long episode of a TV drama in its original English version, with English,
Spanish or no subtitles overlaid. Before and after the viewing, participants took a listening
and vocabulary test to evaluate their speech perception and vocabulary acquisition in
English, plus a final plot comprehension test. The results of the listening skills tests revealed
that after watching the English subtitled version, participants improved these skills signifi-
cantly more than after watching the Spanish subtitled or no-subtitles versions. The vocabu-
lary test showed no reliable differences between subtitled conditions. Finally, as one could
expect, plot comprehension was best under native, Spanish subtitles. These learning
effects with just 1 hour exposure might have major implications with longer exposure times.

I'm thinking of going back to anki. I tried the anti-SRS approach that is shilled so hard in this thread, but it's kind of frustrating to be coming across words I know from listening context but not being able to read them, or knowing I've seen it before, but not having the proper spacing to cement the kanji into my long term memory. This has led me to the conclusion that at the end of the day, using anki to reinforce kanji readings is very time efficient. I might try to use sentence cards as having that extra context and being able to see lines from works I've already read seems more efficient than single word cards. The tedium of doing anki for single word cards is why I dropped it in the first place.

I know some people might say read more, but I do not have 4+ hours to dedicate to reading a day, which seems to be near the accepted minimum for the "SRS by reading" method.

First, kanji helps a lot since a standard thing is "kanji word then kana particle" or "kanji word then okurigana", so you can somewhat use kanji to distinguish words (with lots of exceptions of course but it's a solid guideline)

Second, as you learn vocabulary it will be obvious, i-adjectives for example will obviously not be a part of a long word

Reality and language are not the same thing.
Language is fluid and nuanced. You can never say "this word means this and exactly this, only this, nothing else" because language evolves, changes, has nuance, subtext, and so on. If you look up definitions of "typo", for instance, you'll see varying definitions about a typo being a typographical error, and most don't mention anything about it being strictly accidental. What does this mean, then? It means you've developed your own little private language definition of the word, what it means to you and what subtext it has for you, its connotations, are unique to your mind. But the rest of the world isn't you, and it means something else to them, as factually recorded in dictionaries.

So you have two choices. Huddle into your shell, claim that all he dictionaries are wrong, all the other people are wrong, that language is objective and unchanging and only you know the actual meaning of words... or accept that language is fluid, nuanced, and people have different ideas about what words mean but none of them are objectively wrong because language doesn't work like that.

Even though it is my dream, every time i try, it just seems way too far fetched to even learn the kanas, that's more than i learn in a year.

Flashcards and repeating strokes are just wasted effort, since it all blends together in my head.

I tried duolingo when it got Japanese support, but i shortly abandoned it due to it having many issues.

The only real way for me to learn things is by examples and associations. I know の from movie titles, ゴ from gojira, etc etc.

I'm pretty sure i have a learning disability, is there no point in continuing?

two words: FULL IMMERSION

This means you watch all of your anime dubbed and your manga translated. do this for 10+ years to get a feel for the Japanese culture, their outlandish customs and traditions and their backwards and archaic mindset.
Then progress to consume subbed Japanese media for the next 10 years. By then you should be able to recognise individual words and phrases like "onii-chan", "itadakimasu", "tadaima", "muzukashii", "tasukete kudasai" and many others. You will experience your first rush of euphoria.

But don't be fooled, at that point you are only at 49% of your journey to fully unlock and master Japanese. Most, if not all books and guides recommend learning kanji. This is a grave mistake that will - in most cases, lead you to aimlessly linger for years until you give up on your dream out of sheer frustration and desperation.
What you should do instead is learn the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs until you can read the inner wall writings of the Cheops pyramid effordlessly.
Only THEN will you be fully capable of grasping the concept of kanji and there should be nothing left standing in your way to achieve your dream of mastering the Japanese language.

The typical LN is somewhere around 100k to 150k characters. Sometimes you go down to 50k, sometimes you go up to 250k, but pretty much everything is in the 100k to 150k range. It just so happens that Hanahira! is almost 50k characters long. If we were to, just for example, use this as a unit of measurement, then the typical LN is around 2 to 3 Hanahira!s long, and the really long ones are up to 5. When you look at "real" novels, they usually hit the 100k to 200k range, or 2 to 4 Hanahira!s. Now, when you look at visual novels, things get interesting. You have a massive range of lengths due to the lack of physical restrictions holding the format down, anywhere from 50k characters to around 2,500,000. This is not for the faint of heart. You're probably not going to see all the text in a single one of the longest VNs, but you can easily have 40 Hanahira!s worth of content in a single contiguous story.

Common mistakes you make if you use textbooks to learn Japanese:
>skipping the practice
If you think you "save time" by just reading tasks and not answering them yourself, you will get fucked later on after you realized that you were a lazy fuck.
>only reading grammar explanations once
A textbook is for learning. Learning means repeating. If you just try to go the fast way, you will never learn Japanese.
>only use textbooks for basic Japanese (for example Genki I and II), but not more advanced textbooks like tobira
If you use textbooks, you have to use them until you have reached the advanced level. Japanese is too hard to master with just basic Japanese knowledge. After a few months you will quit Japanese if you have only learned basic Japanese, because you won't make much progress.
>skipping the audio
Also use everything the textbooks include. Only skip audio if you are studying Japanese in college or university (because you have a teacher).
>don't using Anki for vocabulary
Always use Anki to learn vocabulary. Pretty much every textbook has a pre made Anki deck.
>going back
Always remember that once you have really finished a textbook, never look back. You have to progress not stagnate. Only look back to remember grammar points.
>not learning rtk before using textbooks
It is HIGHLY advised to finish rtk before starting using textbooks. Every textbook which ONLY tries to teach you Kanji belongs into the trash. Use textbooks to learn everything except how to learn Kanji. If you know all Kanjis (thanks to rtk), learning how to spell them is extremely easy (especially because most Kanji have a pattern).
>only using textbooks
Textbooks are the "core" of your learning. But try to read/watch/listen to other Japanese stuff like animes as much as you can. Sure, finishing basic textbook like Genki I and II are pretty mandatory before understanding anything, but if you combine textbooks with other stuff, you will be "fluent" in Japanese even faster.
>don't investing enough time into learning Japanese
If you don't have the time to learn Japanese, don't learn Japanese at all. Every person who thinks "you can't read any Japanese sentence if you used textbooks" is just someone who either never used a good textbook, or has only skipped through the pages. There is a reason Genki I alone takes half a year to "master" if you have to learn Japanese in the little free time you have.

The word "textbook" is misleading anyway. In theory a website with a full textbook like stile from basic to advanced Japanese would be as good as the old school textbooks, but right now there is no website. The best thing you get is downloading the .pdf data of textbooks from websites. Also you need rtk and Anki to really learn Japanese.

But if you ask yourself "why are most people quitting if you just need textbooks, Anki, and rtk to learn Japanese?" The answer is simple: It takes a lot of fucking time and effort. It's like saying "you just have to do sports to have a great body." Even if you know "the best way", this still doesn't mean that you will do it.

My god rtk is so fucking bad. The concept of remembering kanji as "primitives" using mnemonics and disregarding kangxi is good because you'll be able to write and not mistake similar-looking kanji for one other is pretty good, BUT
- Using an English keyword for each character is the dumbest shit ever. It simply adds more shit to learn with close to nothing in return. Not only are some keywords made up for the sake of the method and don't convey the character's meaning(s) at all, assuming it actually does convey a "proper" meaning only knowning a single meaning is worthless 95% of the time when learning vocab because a lot of characters can have much more than a single meaning, and vocab more than often disregards the components' meanings completely or partially, or at least it's hard to infer the meaning. If anything, I'd go as far as saying that mapping a single meaning to a character can actually be detrimental because it can be error-inducing.
- Knowing readings is actually much more reliable than meanings when it comes to coming accross unfamiliar words if you're familiar with the language. Context is a much powerful tool than wild guesses based on (more often than not incorrect) "meanings".
- The story model heisig uses isn't vivid at all. There's literally NO PROOF that remembering a stupid story over time is easier on your brain/time than bruteforcing characters. Even when you do come up with your own stories. At the end of the day it's all just unproven shit that "seems" to work for "some" people.

The one good point of RTK is it does help preventing the mind haze you feel when trying to write out characters you know how to read from memory. I wish there was a real method to differenciate/write similar-looking characters that didn't consist in making the same mistake 20 times and hoping that you'll get it right the next time.

>There's literally NO PROOF that remembering a stupid story over time is easier on your brain/time than bruteforcing characters
it's true it's not proven but in my experience visualizing components and making stories made it so much easier to remember them in 2 minutes that i severely doubt you can remember as many of them in the same amount of time through bruteforce. i mean i would literally make and imagine the story for 2 minutes and then remember how to precisely write it in the long term, only writing it a few more times within the next month and then remembering it for months after that.

that said, you shouldn't do RTK for other reasons you described. so bruteforce away.

I agree with you but
>There's literally NO PROOF that remembering a stupid story over time is easier on your brain/time than bruteforcing characters.
Is blatantly false. Our brains have a much easier time recalling something if there’s some sort of visual stimuli associated with it. In memory competitions, competitors associate the things they need to memorize with objects or places, and then imagine a story that takes them through all of them. There should be a Ted talk about it somewhere.

Otherwise, yeah, Heisig’s methods are worthless and it pisses me off that he’s so insistent on using ONE ENGLISH KEYWORD for everything. I dropped RTK at around ~400 because it wasn’t helping me any.

yes it will. your brain remembers things much, much easier if you already have something to associate the information with. think of it like a programming array, you have the entry "食 food" in your head already. the only thing you have to do to learn japanese is add extra information to what you already know like たべる・たべもの・しょくじ, and your brain will remember it much quicker and easier than if you simply tried to learn it all at once.

it's like remembering dates and shit, it's obviously much easier for your brain to associate certain dates with events because it already has some concept to attach it to.

>> No.20873082

also 'unfitting' is basically a strawman. there's like 10 heisig keywords that aren't very good and the rest are fine, and there's literally nothing stopping you from altering the keywords if you dont like them. it's a methodology and order for remembering the kanji, the keywords dont need to be exactly as he says as long as the order is maintained.

it is gonna be helpful. it should just be stressed that most people won't find the investment to be worth it. and the minority that do think it's worth it are just delusional for overestimating the utility of RTK past the first 500 or 1000 kanji.

After some time has passed, I've learned that the road to recovery for my newly found condition will be long, and it's still unsure how much it will affect me financially. As such, concerns for medical expenses are at the top of my mind. >>20872710
Completely correct. I made more progress in the last 4 months of last year than I during two years making basic level decks on Memrise (which really burnt me out half of the time). There's no secret to the progress either as it was just learning more vocabulary (those JLPT Tango decks are legit), and reading a lot more (thanks DJT).

I'm not embarrassed taking time making shit that's been useful for other people (given out the JLPT Tango decks to almost 200 people, and they come back for later levels). I am embarrassed at the time spent making shit that wasn't useful or went to waste (Memrise again since they're pulling an iKnow. Dozens of hours wasted to make courses that take minutes to make in Anki).

Subs can help as long as you can stay focused. You should listen to the jap first, try to comprehend, then check the sub if you understood correctly or try to fill in the gaps. This of course with normal speed is pretty hard to do already, but not impossible. The problem is, especially if you get immerse in the story, you quickly loose all that focus and you start to just read the subs. Unfortunately your brain is extremely good at ignoring irrelevant data (if you are not autistic as fuck).

What I do and what I recommend:
>watch seasonal anime with subs and try to stay focused on the dub as much as you can
>rewatch older anime or super easy stuff like pegga pig raw as much as you can
>do anki to learn more vocab daily and have a look at basic grammar

If you are already good at reading you might consider doing the same just with japanese subs. But please turn off the subs at least 50% of your time. It really cripples your learning and watching raw isn't as bad as it sounds. You will comprehend alot even from just the animation and the little japanese you already know. Also try not to translate everything in your head, just try to understand without focusing on single words that much. This is in the end how you understand a language, it's a mostly unconscious process.

I just used Pegga to get my point across, because it's already pretty established on here. It's great for beginners, but it's also pretty hard to watch without doing opiates and finally killing yourself. Moomins might be a bit harder to understand, but it's actually really good and at least the recommended 90s version has about 70-80 episodes.
