That seems to be the popular theory, but here's an alternative to consider.

Ponyko is not a person Madotsuki knows, but rather the person she wishes she was. Pretty and graceful, instead of creepy and weird. Likewise, Monoko is not someone Mado knows, but an aspect of her insecurity. Monoko is an exaggeration of everything Mado doesn't like about herself.

However, neither of these come anywhere close to solving the Uboa riddle...

I just re-downloaded this game, and am playing through it again.

I have about half the effects, and I just got the knife. And I just noticed, the floor patterns around the knife are big hands. Pretty nifty. Seems like hands are a recurring motif in this game.

It's a game where all you do is walk around. It's like Shadow of the Colossus without the boss fights. It's slow, repetitive, not every power has a use, and it's buggy. You might like it, it might be creative, but it's not a very good game.

You don't PLAY Yume Nikki for /v/-like entertainment.
It's a god damned artistic experience, and you're not to be looking for a game in it.

Go play Nasu. It's very exciting.

>I wish I could make a shitty game like this or touhou and spawn tons of awesome fanart.
I'm ok when people say Touhou is shitty, because Touhou is just another danmaku (with bad art/animation).

But when you say an original game like Yume Nikki is bad, you're just being a retard. Yumi Nikki is an original game. If we start insulting original content then the video game industry will never evolve past the guns-and-tits trend. In a sense, one can say Yume Nikki is art (and as you know, art is subjective). How can you say Yume Nikki is shit when there's no other games like it to compare it to? We know Halo is shit because we can compare it to Goldeneye or Half-life. We know the latest Zelda is shit because we can compare it to the previous Zeldas. But when you say Yume Nikki's unique gameplay is shit, what are you comparing it to? Wouldn't it be safe to conclude that you're just not a fan of the adventure genre. Well I guess in the case of this game it's in the navigation/exploring/adventure genre.

If you want a GOOD game, get back to playing your generic Halo.

This thread is quickly getting retarded. Yume Nikki at its best is an interactive creative experience and at its worse is boring walkan.

Trying to tell someone IT'S STILL GOOD BECAUSE _____ when they obviously are not into its aesthetic is worthless.
Trying to tell someone it's crap because _____ is equally worthless because some people ENJOY the feeling of walking around aimlessly forever only to find some new surprise buried in the map somewhere.

Stop trying to argue that it's a good/bad game. Let YN fans have their fun in this thread and ignore it if you don't like it. Likewise it just looks completely stupid to try and convince someone YN is good. You either like it or don't. No one's going to go OH MY GOSH NOBODY'S DONE THIS KIND OF GAME BEFORE??? >However, neither of these come anywhere close to solving the Uboa riddle...
For the best friend thing, Madotsuki is either afraid of Poniko betraying her, or Poniko already did betray her in some way. In fact, since the whole room pretty much turns into smiles, it might be that something horribly embarrassing happened to Mado and her best friend was the first to laugh at her for it.
For the ideal Madotsuki theory, Uboa is everything terrible that Madotsuki could possibly become, the worst possible part of her. It might also be that she thinks that if she becomes perfect, deep down inside she'll become impossibly horrible.
Here, have another theory if you want one:
Madotsuki's eyes are always closed not because she's supposed to be asleep, but because she's been blind since some incident in her childhood. The dream world is what she thinks the world looks like, based on her memories and distorted by her imagination.

I dont understand your thinking

In the end, I dont care about the time and money used in making a product. In the end, it comes down to whether or not it is enjoyable.

The fact that an amazing game can be created by 1 person while 100 people make a shitty one is impressive, but is completely independent of the quality.
