you do, of course, need to develop good mining habits if you're going to use anki, and building them early instead of months in is a good thing. different people have different media consumption habits so you have to figure out what good mining habits are on your own. just get on with it.

My experience with memorizing vocabulary with an Anki deck has been, that as I memorize vocab, more and more of the anime I'm watching becomes something I understand instead of background noise. If I wasn't memorizing vocab... I don't know, I'd have to do something else to learn the words. Right now I'm not reading. That's a very difficult question. Eastern philosophy is very different from Western philosophy. In the East, the meaning to life and the right way to live, is considered a solved problem. They have no concept of progressivism. You can go in to some depth studying Buddhist scriptures, but the shortest high quality introduction to eastern philosophy I can think of is this Bhagavad Gita translation in English. No commentary, it's just a translation. It's fully equivalent to a quick summary of Buddhist philosophy because they are the same. You have to take it seriously. It's really against degeneracy and hubris and things like that.

Interestingly enough, the golden age of art education was the apprentice system where you'd just assist better artists than you for 10 years without really doing your own work. You didn't have "art classes", and your master didn't "teach you", he just did his thing and you watched. You just had a massive "input" period where you simply learned to repeat what your master did, and your style evolved naturally from that simply through the fact that you're a different human being. Nowadays people attend art classes hoping to learn "tricks" and worry about developing their own unique style even though they have never studied the masters or nature. That's the equivalent to early output in language learning.

All that to say that I think it applies to other (mostly artistic/expression based) fields as well. Most artists don't have conscious knowledge of what makes them good, so you just have to "immerse" in their knowledge.

I've been reading Kino no Tabi for about a month now and I'm only on chapter 2. I just can' get into it and the writing style feels really weird to me.

And I can't understand why the author made the first two stories start out exactly the same. Half of the story is getting to a new country, they look everywhere but no one is there. I can understand that this type of plot might come up more than once in a long series, but why would you start out your book with two stories that are so similar?

I only like to read one thing at a time and I don't like dropping them either, so I often get into these situations where I don't want to continue but can't move on to something else. Really annoying.

>> No.20813211

it's simple. if you don't want to read it then quit reading it. not like 2 chapters is that far into it so you shouldn't feel any need to complete it. it's like giving an anime 3 episodes to decide if you want to watch the whole thing or not. it's the job of the author to interest you not your job to force yourself to be interested. if you look around and find something you personally want to read you will progress much faster and learn more at the same time. if you need it said differently what you are doing right now is WASTING TIME that could be better spent having fun learning nihongo and going on adventures in books and tv shows

Most people love gaijin there and the ones that hate us are usually quiet about it. I started doing Core 6k in August of 2017. I wanted to finish the deck in less than a year which was very possible, but because of life and other things, it took me about half a year longer. During the past year, I've grown very impatient and bored with Core 6k. I wanted to do subs2srs, sentence mine visual novels with Yomichan, read light novels and manga, watch more dramas and Nihongo No Mori videos, finally go through Tae Kim, DoBJG and my ShinKanzen Master textbook and so on.

But because I'm fucking retarded, I couldn't do any of that because I had Core 6k sitting there. Every time I did something else, I just thought to myself "I could spend this time working on Core 6k instead. It's not smart to learn from a thousand different resources at once. And what's the point of learning vocab from some other place when I'm still not done with Core 6k?". I just felt uncomfortable spending my time on other things when I had such a huge deck sitting there.

Now I've got no more stupid lists to grind, and with the vocabulary I've acquired, I can finally do some more productive things with Japanese :)

And to everybody out there who's still grinding the core decks: Good luck and keep fighting!! I was tempted to keep going with the Core 10k, but this fucking circus has to stop now, lol.

It's the same は genius, meanings 2 and 3 in the dictionary you linked are pretty heavily related. In certain contexts it could even be explained better by contrast/limitation.

Another dictionary (明鏡) straight up defines 3 by extending 2:
対比の前提となる事柄が不明確であったり、通常の様子であったりすると、(3)の限定や強調を表すようになる。

And a third (新明解) only includes two senses, both loosely describing that it creates a limitation:

Don't argue about fucking は in a short clause with zero context.

Matt and people like him should not be trusted blindly. If you don't know which education they have (have they a college/university degree?) and what knowledge they have about teaching Japanese, you shouldn't take them serious.

Let's dispel some myths
>you have to be in Japan to learn real Japanese
bullshit. In times with internet and other communication methods, it is much more economical and more likely faster to stay at home and learn the language before visiting Japan. Small talk street Japanese (which will be the only Japanese you will hear on the streets) is worth nothing.
>AJATT/MIA is the best method to learn Japanese
You make one MAJOR mistake: You are not living in Japan. If you learn Japanese outside of Japan you have to combine Japanese with the languages you use. NEVER isolate languages. If you have to talk in English all day, then try to find a way to talk in English, but at the same time improve your Japanese (like thinking for yourself how would I say it in Japanese), but never isolate yourself. Your second/third language should be a part of your life and not an artificial time waste.
>don't use textbooks or anything else which is not anime/manga
Textbooks were written exactly for people who want to learn Japanese. Don't try to skip textbooks. They are the only (cheapest) way to give you a "logical" way through the language. After you have finished all basic/intermediate/advanced textbooks, you know what the language is about. After you have finished the textbooks you will learn much faster and have a solid knowledge about Japanese.
>Heisig's RTK is a time waste/Anki is a time waste
RTK and Anki are the fastest way to learn a new language. Especially RTK is mandatory for non Asian natives. If you found a better way, then you are either lying or you have found the perpetuum mobile. Also if you are like Matt and overdo Anki, just remember one thing: Do you really need to know how every chemical molecule is written in Japanese? If you don't even know the word in your own language, don't waste your time learning words you will never use.
>pitch accent is important
No. If you learn and speak Japanese, you will create the best pitch accent naturally. No one is perfect and everyone has a dialect. The question is not "how good can I speak Japanese" the question is only "Do I get what I want with my Japanese?". A language is not science. There is no right or wrong. A language changes over time and never try to waste too much time with small things. There are important moments where you want to speak "perfectly", but those moments are in a speech or discussion where you would prepare yourself anyway. For normal conversation just speak as good as you can. If the other person understands you, you are golden.

In my experience most people who don't have a guidance through Japanese quit after a few years. Just look at Matt. He is at a point where he has a feeling that he wasted his time with Japanese. This will happen if you try learn Japanese without any guide like a textbook or a teacher. Also if you can't use the language in your daily life, you are just wasting your time. Also one thing you have to consider: Most people spend much less time learning a language than they actually think they do. Matt for example wasted 6 months of his life in Japan. This includes the preparations, the time abroad, and the time making himself comfortable at home again. I would even say this one "trip" wasted at least a year of his life where he created no good Japanese friends or career opportunities (including little to no Japanese progress).

You need a guide to learn a language. Don't make the mistake and learn without a guide. Like I said a language is no science. You have to literally copy something which was created by humans and changes over time. You literally have to become a Chinese and copy the shit out of this language and the best way is with a guide which was created to make as much sense as possible from zero to "nipponjin".

One last thing: Quality over quantity. Every textbook you use, every Anki deck you use, and everything you do to learn the language has to be as good as possible. Don't waste your time with "test" decks or new textbooks which haven't been used by others. Always look that you use the best way to learn the language which are confirmed by a lot of people that this was their best way to learn the language. Also don't try to think you are Japanese. You are not. Learn Japanese with this in mind that you have better ways to learn the language than nihonjin. You aren't a baby. You already know one language and you should use this to your advantage.

They say it takes 4-5 years to be decent at nihongo and you need to enjoy something in the language to keep you motivated. Some people like reading, games, anime, etc. I enjoy understanding what they're saying in the animes. After even half a year, you can decode quite a bit.

Textbooks were written based on old as learning methods that even our outdated shit schools still use. We have learned so much about how humans learn, yet our school systems haven't been modernized in the past 100+ years. Textbooks just push you out of the door with retarded phrases and don't teach much about the grammar decisions that have been made behind your back and why until much later. Textbooks are a waste of time. Teachers are a waste of time too, because like i said, the way we learn at schools or in classroom settings is so fucking outdated that it's probably less than 20% effieciency (this figure is entirely made up by me).

It's not "pretty relevant" if you happen to live/work in Japan. If you did you wouldn't even consider it to be relevant. There are so many words necessary for functioning in daily life, even as a wageslave, that it doesn't even come close to touching on that the idea that it's relevant is laughable. Nobody is going to expect you to know all the different business words when you don't even know the difference between "irritated" and "angry", nor should you. You can't actually function on 6000 words. No, you can't.

The ONLY purpose of core vocabulary decks is to make it easier for the user to consume real Japanese so they can learn the words that are actually important to their lifestyle. You cannot defend using a frequency list made from decades-old newspapers when that is the goal.
