So when reading manga, I understand like 70-80 percent of what is being said
Will I ever reach a point of %95+ understanding?

As an ESL, sometimes I lay in my bed thinking about how I learned english to the point where I am, but I don't remember how. I just have vague flashes of the days where I would read an english paragraph and not understand a thing

if you learn 社長 and dont personally think that's a good word to learn, it's still useful to learn because you now know the readings for those two kanji that you'll see a lot in other words like 社会, 身長, etc. so it's not like doing the core6k is a waste of time, because all the kanji used in it are very common themselves.

Does anyone else find it ironic that MattvsJapan advises focusing solely on listening but then also shills early listening through anime? Like if you are going for developing a solid phonetic base through listening, doesn't it make more sense to listen to natural, in the moment dialogue from live action rather than heavily exaggerated cartoon talk? Like imagine if someone learning english told you they were immersing with spongebob from the start? You'd tell them they're an idiot, go watch a TV show where people speak like, you know, normal people.

Idk anime isn't like spongebob and the words are all recorded very clearly by professional voice actors. Once you know what the words are then it's easier to go into live action where speech is slurred since your brain will be able to predict what they are saying. I think the most important part is to listen to what you are interested in cuz that's where the progress will come from. If ppl want to listen to live action I don't think matt would tell them not to though idk for sure it sounds like that's what you were hinting at. when matt talks about his experience on psychedelics it seems he's saying he was able to see for the first time how there is no objective reality and that everything we experience goes through the filter of our mind, but that filter is not objective in any meaningful sense. if that's what he's getting at, then do i have an ultra high IQ for already knowing it and not having to take drugs or meditate?

it's not that i hate anime, but if you are doing a perfectionist build, putting off reading in favor of listening, trying to develop an understanding of how natural japanese sounds, pronunciation, pitch accent, flow, etc, and from that understanding wanting to attain minimally accented spoken speech, why would you use anime which contains lots of clearly exaggerated speech that is at odds with how normal people talk? Anime is fine but my point was aimed at the MIA perfectionist build users in particular like our boy thejapancode

Now, it is important to recognize the difference between true samadhi with self-mastery (see pages 94—95) and the false kind of
samadhi without it. In the first, even when the inner man is forgotten,
he is not forsaken. The firmly established man is getting along well
within, ready to make his appearance at any time. False samadhi lacks
this self-mastery from the outset. There can be fighting samadhi,
stealing samadhi, hating samadhi, jealousy samadhi, worrying, dreading, upsetting samadhi, but all without the guidance of self-mastery.
These are not true samadhi as it is understood in Zen.
An animal or bird enjoys samadhi every moment. When it grazes
in a meadow it is in a grazing samadhi. When it flies up at the sound of
a gun, it is in a flying samadhi. Mellowed by the evening sun, standing
quietly for a long time motionless in the meadow, it is in what we
might call a "mellowing samadhi" —a beautiful picture and a condition to be envied even by a human being. But the animal has no self- consciousness ; though much to be admired, the animal's samadhi is after all an animal samadhi, a lower state than that which man is capable of. The mellow condition attained by some under the influence of
drugs like LSD, though greatly attractive to weaker characters, can be
compared to that of animal samadhi. It is a retrogression to the primi92
SAMADHl
tive life. Not losing self-mastery but at the same time being involved in external conditions is the real meaning of "Man is deprived; circumstances are not deprived." In this state the inner man is simply in- active.

I'm not a native english speaker, but I learned english mainly trough text so I can relate to what you're saying. I managed to somewhat cure it by forcing myself to watch things without subtitles and just figuring it out.
But I do believe that if you first end up in that situation you can never truly cure it, your mind will always rely on the information it has learned through text to infer what people are saying.
I've learned from this mistake though, and I'm definitely not making it again in japanese. 70-80% of my immersion is from audio only, so if you truly want to develop your listening abilities I suggest doing the same.

Today's kanji tiem is a quick one. We have a chair above an orifice, denoting a toilet. Of course, each and every home or office must have a toilet and this kanji means "each" or "every". It’s dumb because there’s there’s arbitrary amounts of information for any observation, psychedelics mainly just introduce derealization/depersonalization (among other things) which makes observations about existence and reality seem more “true” than they are.
You’re probably thinking you’re hot shit because you think you think in terms of atoms and light years woah epistemology, woah human experience is bound within the material universe thinking in those terms is more valid than the human-environment model that comes naturally... actually I don’t even care, if you are stuck on nihilistic angst like a teenager and it makes you feel more insightful than normoids then go for it.

I feel there's a bunch of advice of AJATT/MIA that should be refocused/expanded for a more mature audience. I'm a 29 year old dude. There's a few manga that I love reading but I've never been able to get into anime, because of pretty much the same reasons Matt gave in the latest Q&A, and I feel like a lot of the immersion advice here is based around watching hours of anime (although the community here does a wonderful job at recommending non-anime resources).

Which might be an overarching theme to consider. I really applaud the people I've seen interviewed by Matt. They're all intelligent and tenacious bright people who have achieved fluency, but they all are very young folks who don't seem to have that much in the way of responsibilities besides themselves. Additionally, it seems most of these people had to set aside wellbeing, mental health and social life to achieve the goal of fluency, which I think this community should discourage more than it is currently doing.

This is in no way an indictment on the method or these people, but it would be encouraging to know more of people with a family and/or a full time job who managed to make this method work.

Wrong

Step 1) learn the kana. Don’t skimp out on the katakana, write both alphabets by hand at least 50 times or until you’ve memorized how it’s written
Step 2) learn kanji. Go through each of the kanjis, reciting the readings, recalling it’s meaning, and writing it by hand until you can write a kanji when you hear its reading or hear its keyword.
Step 3) learn the grammar. Tae Kim is a great resource but it’s incomplete, I highly recommend a grammar book based flash card deck instead because people tend to have a harder time producing proper grammar than they do producing proper vocab.
Step 4) either start trying to read or start speaking in Japanese, depending on whether you are an introvert or an extrovert (take an online test if you’re not sure which one you are)
Step 5) once you’re confident in your abilities, take the JLPT N1 test

And wala you now know Japanese

if you want to learn how to output by outputting i think you can do that with stuff like hellotalk where you can have natives correct what you type. i would be careful of forcing output without strict correction since you won't have a reliable enough model of japanese to realize when you mess up

Realize that every way will get you there. It might take a bit more time if it's not the most efficient one, but the important thing is that you interact with the language daily. More importantly, don't burn yourself out doing something that you don't like.
So do what seems to make the most sense for you.

Do you want to jump into the unknown? Start reading something and memorize kanji on the go.
Do you prefer a more organized textbook approach? Do Genki 2 and maybe RTK or something similar.
