As someone new to reading, I have a question for those of you who have been through the 'reading for the first time' phase.

Pretty much I am curious how much of the reading I should actually be putting effort into reading and doing further digging/translating/research to try and find out the meaning of words I don't know or sentences I don't understand. I have only go to the 5th page of my reading material (some shitter-friendly manga). I've tried some slightly different "strategies" on a few of the pages and I'm not sure what the best one is for actually learning. I would classify them as follows:

>The quick and dirty
Just read through the page as quickly as I can within reason. Don't skip over the several words I don't know and just read what I do know and hopefully piece together what I can. Even if I can read a word (like if there's furigana) but don't know what it means whatever, just make a mental note. Takes me a couple minutes for a page like this and I feel like I actually understand less than half, but I get through it quick so its a lot more exposure than...

>The perfectionist
Every word/sentence I don't understand is deciphered over minutes to get as much of a complete understanding as I can. Put any words I didn't know in a reading deck because I have some real context with them now. This took me anywhere from 30-60 minutes per page, but I felt like I understood at least 75%-90% by the end.

And of course there is something in between that's probably the ideal way to read for a beginner. But I want to know about how much emphasis to put on either extreme and which I should lean towards.

Firstly, AJATT is excessive. It's unhealthy to make nihongo that central to your life. Secondly, why should learning say both English and German as a child make it easier to acquire nihongo later on?

Netflix actually has some good immersion stuff. The marvel shows on there all have japanese and they speak really clear and slower than anything else. The subs don't match up to the audio but it's kind of a bonus because you'll learn 同義語. It's like double immersion.

I am speaking from the perspective of a non-white person who grew up in the west. I'd say that growing up learning two languages that are extremely different (no shared vocabulary/structure) in an informal setting has made learning ninhongo informally very easy. I've already done this shit..I grew up doing this shit. My dad's side of the family immigrated to Nihongo instead of the west. My cousin is fluent in our native language and nihongo..she also ended up becoming insanely fluent in English within a few years.

Correlation does not imply causation. Language isn't any different from learning anything else really. I think a driven person is what makes the difference. Either driven by curiousity or circumstance or whatever. But if you've learned 2 languages already the only difference is you're not as mentally lazy as someone that stopped leaning new words in bulk around 8. I don't think it's anything you can't overcome though. White people are just lazy in general in comparison.

Like anything to associate ichidan with dropping the る or something. Its one of those dumb things I can't keep straight in my head and every time I see ichidan or godan I have this annoying "oh is that the one I drop the る or not?" and have to look it up and for some reason I can't keep it straight.

ichidan verbs are called ichidan because their conjugated forms all retain the same one vowel sound, either -e(ru) or -i(ru)

exclamations/filler make up only 10 words, and the miscellaneous makes up like 400 (and it's mostly error based so you cant learn it anyway)...

i dont think anyone would expect you to learn every single proper noun in every language. that would require knowing every place name, person's name, etc... it's only slightly more annoying in japanese because you won't necessarily be able to read it, but you can still understand that it's a person/place/animal being talked about.

It really depends. I've seen Sanskrit poetry translated as beautifully as the original -- because the translator was a great poet himself. But my point is, in short, that Japanese is loaded with far more subtleties of emotion (and rank) than we're used to employing in English. That's partly where "just feel the nihongo" comes from.
