Then why the fuck did they leave in other honorifics? Why the fuck did they leave in "Onii-chan"? Why, instead of translating "Nii-ni" to either "bro", "dude", or whatever they were previously translating it to did they translate it to "Bronii-chan" at one point, which is a variation of the word "Onii-chan" just like "Nii-ni" or "Nii-yan" (except Sekai just made this one up)? Here's a search across job engines in NZ, Australia, USA, Canada, and the UK for undertaker
NZ: 0 results
Australia: 0 results
Canada: 0 results
UK: Land surveyors and engineers
USA: Finds a limited amount of funeral director jobs, none of which in my quick sample contain the word "undertake" in their description. Searching 'funeral director' finds a much larger breadth of available openings.

That's why I ask because I've only heard people say undertaker in spaghetti westerns and, I guess, wrestling. Yes, I know the word, but I wouldn't class them as common words.

Anyone familiar with Hot soup processor? I can't use most of the special characters like tilde because it looks bad with english font. But if i mix kana and alphabets i get script error so it's one or the another only. it would be ideal if this could be patched for utf8 in some way (https://vndb.org/v14913).). I already translated all menu images with text, now only scenario files are left + editing

i'm not technically adept enough to do that. As far as i know the game uses hsp 'note' functions (notesel/notedel) to store text and show it and they might be tied to default japanese system font (the game refuses to launch in non-japanese locale).

Currently my workflow is to extract dpm files which are resources using exdpmx. Then convert script files to utf8, use custom tools to extract tags and translate them and then rebuild script file and convert back to sjis. Then run Open HSP and rebuild dpm archive. The game launches happily, but this is using cracked version. I failed to get updated archive run with bought DLsite version :/

Worse. The perception is that the translation is being made worse by design. Is it any wonder how we got to this state? Players complain and see the translators strut, guffawing at us for daring to criticise. The battle-lines are drawn and each side is deeply entrenched. We’re in total war. No hill is too small to die on.

Player’s wishes. The players buying these games are passionate. Asking translators to hold the same love for a product is too much to ask, but is it too much to ask for respect? There is scant outreach from translators. They’ll post their reasoning, and then close the gates. No further discussion. Sycophants then rally around and beat their drum to the same tune.

Players are voicing their concerns. These players are the core fanbase for translator’s products, and the engine of their anger are the perceived slights against something they hold dear.

I don’t need to elaborate on this. To err is human. A project can be a maze of interconnected pieces, each with their own reason to fail, and the monetary constraints of this scene are at the forefront. I respect that, and I can extend good-will that mistakes happen. Translators acting like rock-stars, however, destroys the faith we give to your projects.

Be more open to player complaints. Skirmishes are fought over honorifics because these are what people are most familiar with. Do some introspection on how to turn player complaints into player praise.

And in closing, it is dangerous to discard anonymous opinions, because truth is only carried in anonymity. Identity tempers an opinion. The vitriol in these threads reveals the depth of people’s feelings.

aside from the obvious exaggerated dramatic-ism of your post, i think it's important to note that it's kind of going both ways. when it comes to a lot of stuff, i generally agree with most of what VNTS posts, but it isn't as if this general is saintly; a lot of people here focus way too much on e-celeb drama, insults, and other polarizing attitudes which generally causes the other side to further entrench and provide themselves with a bias against listening to people here.

frankly the situation between the community (ribbit and vnts, mostly) and the people working in the industry is too polarized: you have people working in the industry who believe they can do no wrong, refuse to listen to a lot of customer feedback (or, in some cases, merely pretend to listen and never apply it), and are generally quite full of themselves on the usual social media platforms which i imagine does little good for gaining sympathy points with anyone. doubly so when you consider that some people have had such attitudes and posts for numerous years now.

but then you also have the community here and on ribbit, who, at the sight of merely one or two localized words that they disagree with, will totally discount tens of hours of work that has been put in a translation, creating a confirmation bias for themselves which says: "This translation is dogshit. They are doing this on purpose. They're trolling us. They're intentionally sabotaging this game." now, yes, very often the translations are less than stellar quality - can we count the number of releases in the past year on more than one hand which didn't have a poorly QA'd script? i don't think we can. generally speaking, in spite of the many hours spent on these releases, they come out less than 100% quality, which, for a product you pay for, likely rubs a lot of people the wrong way. that being said, i still don't think that - if anyone here wants to at least try to influence this state of affairs - people shouldn't be so harshly judgemental and presumptuous; all it does is encourage a greater division between vnts and various public figures of the industry; they'll huddle up in their various echochambers (/jp/ for vnts, discord for the various employees) where they'll continue to just confirm their own biases to one another. vnts will become less tolerant, while MG/Sekai/NekoNyan/etc. will become less receptive to criticisms.

i don't know, but by the quality standard of this general he was a pretty poor translator, both Funbag Fantasy 1 and Dal Segno had numerous typos and grammar issues, and some pretty garbage memes like replacing "Jiiiiiii" with "Deeeeeeeeerp" and so on.

the only reason people don't complain about him is because he barely exists. i do think there is a significant factor of bias towards those that this general holds grudges against. i mean, yeah, Arunaru IS a douche, but then again so is Aroduc and i never see people not fellating his martyr'd ass (which i can at least understand given how thoroughly fucked over he was).

As a interesting comparison, Newton got $88k in all while the main goal for this KS is $85k. 88k also happens to be the amount Hoshizora got though that's including the Eternal Heart fan disk. Both the Newton KS and Hoshizora KS's had about 1,360 backers as another amusing coincidence.

I'm convinced that everything that happened in Alicesoft general was staged and every single one of translators only was there to make some online name for themselves then sell out. That's why the only things that were translated are some ancient garbage that won't ever sell and all "main dish", modern Rance games were left out. An argument for translating them in chronological order doesn't work because 01 (2013) and 02 (2010) (and no, what was translated is not a 02. It's II with graphics update) weren't touched. So, back on topic, Maria and Aru (and even Steiner got something out of it, even though he never translated anything) got some name for themselves, then sold out to MG. That was their intention from the start and they never cared about Alicesoft general in the first place.
And I don't even hate them for it. My only regret is that I only started learning Japanese in 2016, instead of, let's say, 2011.
