How to grimdark the Touhou:

1. Reimu has to die. Be it from disease or murder, she simply can't be around anymore.

2. Marisa tries to take over her duties with limited success.

3. The spell card system collapses, most of the 1-3rd stage bosses are killed over a period of months.

4. Entities like the SDM and Eintei rally against the Yakumo, who are trying to restore order through conquest.

5. You, as the player, have to take sides. In addition to Marisa's usual fare, by making gloves out of Reimu's own skin, you are able to wield her ying-yang orbs. Shooten ensues.

I like it better as it is today. Gensokyo is supposed to be the place of fables and stuff, introducing killing someone with danmaku would just make people scream more "Marisa and Reimu are bitches/murderers" and that's it.

Seconding this. It's hard to make any characters seem badass when they are never allowed to seriously hurt anyone. Also, a lot of the minor characters Zun never intends to use again really do need to go.

did they? i only remember mystic square at the moment, but it ended with shinki and her maid crying, with a a big lump on their heads as far as i know.
