IMHO Rosetta stone sucks compared to spaced repetition (anki, flashcards) and good old grammar books. But I tried the german version, not the JP one.

I'm taking it this year in December but just for the hell of it (not for any reason in particular, don't even plan going to Japan btw). Level 4 is relatively easy while 1 is supposed to allow you to communicate with others clearly (enough).

One of the biggest mistakes people who learn Japanese do is base their whole language education on JLPT difficulty levels, which is a bad idea IMHO. Exams are out there to test the skills on a practical level, not to provide the shortest and most optimal way.

Which is funny because Level 4 is infamous for its ability to stump even native speakers.

Focus your attention on the best not on the worst. It "stumps" people who clean toilets and and flip burgers in マクドナルド.

When you look at things this way, why learn at all? It's demotivating to compare oneself to losers because you're not leaving any space for improvement.

well the kanji act as decent word boundaries. however the number of homonyms in japanese is ridiculous. 'ka' for example has 100 possible kanji.

Ok, figured just as much. It was just something that's been bothering me every time I look at a bunch of jap text.
I've been working on memorizing Hiragana, and now Katakana before working on Kanji and Grammar.
Anyways, are there any good dictionaries aside from JLookUp?

I'm learning bit by bit each day and its nice to have the positive re-enforcement from my neighbors and what not, i just wish there were more classes near base, which surprisingly there isnt, other than the please and thank yous they dont offer much at all from what i can tell

LOL read stuff like this (archived from 2ch)
http://mobile.seisyun.net/cgi/read.cgi/game11/game11_famicom_1181706175

things like that is easy to read IMHO not because of the sentence structures only the familiarity of the subject. >:3 And with perapera kun or hiragana.jp kanji are no longer a (big) problem.

Just read about things you're interested in. If you want extra simple text just type stuff in かな on google.

I recommend this; http://lrnj.com..

I've been using it for a while now. While I doubt that it could teach you Japanese as a whole, it has greatly helped me learn Katakana, Hiragana and small amount of Kanji.

Updated quite rapidly too (well during the last few weeks at least).
