Nice, we're up again.
Yesterday I lost a game because my hand suddenly transformed to chinitsu, and I didn't make the right discard at a crucial moment. I'll post a table with all the complex combinations that occur in a chinitsu when I get home (it's in a book). I'd do well to memorize them myself.

I've already read it. The book has a simple conversational tone perfect for bedside reading. I've learnt many little things from it, like the fact that an isolated 3 or 7 is better than 456 (excepting tanyao), since you can get a ryanmen at the edge (23, 78). There are mamy parts that I've already used myself before, but having them named in a book makes me pay more attention to them (e.g. くっつき1ーシャンテン).

It's not worth learning Japanese for this one book, but if you're a pre-tokujou player who knows Japanese then it certainly wouldn't hurt to read it. Compared to Riichi book 1 (since they both cover some similar material) this book is a lot more in-depth in my opinion, but not necessarily more advanced. (I've read the Riichi book first, back when I was a worse player, so my opinion of it might be biased.)

It's the book in the middle. I've also read the other two.

It's hard for me to make a recommendation, but for starters you could check out 何切る301 uploaded by an anon in one of the previous threads. tile efficiency is something that you must study more than just realizing that a ryanmen is better than a penchan (riichi book 1 goes to about this depth, as far as I remember).

but really, if you just search for mahjong book reviews and buy the ones that attract you the most, you can't go wrong.

also imagine how cool it would be to see the chance of tsumoing a tile when people are in tenpai, etc. just like in poker. it would be possible with olympic level production. actually, thinking about that, it would be pretty complex to do. with every tsumo that is not the tile that the person is waiting for, the chance to tsumo would increase, since the amount of total tiles decreased. if it was the tile they were waiting for, then the probability would decrease

or just indicating visually how many of the tiles are still in the yama would make it pretty cool.

It's definitely the superior poker and rummy game. Poker's biggest flaw is that it lacks player input and devolves into just a few actions with not a lot to really consider. More of a game of chicken and simple probability really.
Rummy's flaw is that there are no specific hands to make so you are really just melding as soon as you possibly can. At that point you might as well be playing Hong Kong.

started off as a regular month, I made it to tokujou on new year's day, got third twice and I was out (and haven't been back since). I got two suuankos, the chinitsu one and just a plain old one, which were my first ever yakuman. On the 13th, I reached my peak points so far, 四段 980pt. Then came two weeks in which I either didn't play at all, or went heavily minus (I was ill). I was starting to doubt my mahjong skills as I dropped down to 230/1600. Since monday, I've been back to winning, getting 1221211, so now I'm sitting at 545/1600, but the damage has been done. With all these losses, my R dropped to below 1700 at one point, now it's at 1744. It's going to be harder to make it to tokujou now, since my R moves slower as my total game count increases.

Only 2 more 1st/2nd places to get my rentairitsu to 50%! It's a sad sight...

Okay, I'll try to figure it out for you.

discard 8 -> shanpon 4 7 + your other pair = 6 tiles
discard 4 -> sanmen machi 3-6-9 = 10 tiles (2 sixes in your had already) - 1 (the 3 you discarded) = 9 tiles let's say

the furiten sanmenmachi is not bad, but the shanpon could be better if the other pair is an honor tile or a terminal, or some other tile that seems likely to come out

of course, it would be wise to consider how many tiles are left in either case, by checking the discards

No idea why you dropped the tile next to the dora in east 4, the 5p were safe and would have meant that you could have continued trying to win for a while by going for an itsu. In south 1 you dropped the dangerous 6s for no reason when the 1m was safe. If it was to try to get your chinitsu then that was greedy and you were lucky that the other guy dealt in. Again, in south 2 you should have defended and simply didn't. If you really felt you needed to push, then the 7s were safe. Same in the next round, particularly as it was a dealer riichi.

In summary, you didn't once try to actually defend. You need to play far safer in situations when someone has riichi'd and your hand is both low value and far from completion even if that means completely breaking up your hand. You also seem to call far too often. There really isn't much point if you only have 1 han and don't need to simply move the game along.

East 1 - throwing the 5s was a HUGE mistake in tile efficiency, you should just keep the 5 6 ryanmen. To avoid this in the future you can count your total sets. At this point of time you have 4 ryanmen sets (23m 567m 234p 56s) with a bunch of extra tiles that can form your pair with so no point breaking the ryanmen and leaving urself missing 1 set.

East 2 - bad meld early on. It was a 3way wait for 1 4 7 pin so you can easily draw it instead. By taking the tile you lose the power to riichi which hurts your value. Regardless if you were gunning for a quick win, you shouldve discarded 5m after the meld for tenpai for sanshoku dora waiting on dora. Another mistake was throwing the 4m after ponning greendragon. You were in tenpai waiting for 1 4m to form your pair.

In general you have a tendancy to keep pair which hurts your efficiency. Unless you are going for 7pairs, try to keep 2 pairs MAX.
You also do not respect riichi's at all making you feed ippatsu's quite often. If someone riichi's just throw their safe tiles and someone else will feed because its ippan and other players at your level will just push and feed.

There's literally hundreds of ranked games between these accounts, even some in houou. Games are often at the dead hours of Tenhou (fair enough), or sometimes in the modes that no one plays such as aka nashi where it's easier to queue together. These accounts all belong to Russians - you can see who owns most of them here https://mahjong.click/en/tenhou/accounts/ but for the ones that aren't listed, it's because they're old accounts that were sold off or given away at some point. Admittedly that's harder to prove, but I remember hearing talk about it and I'm pretty sure it's an open secret in the Russian community.

Rule of thumb for chiitoi is that if you can go for a normal hand instead, you should. This one is easily a normal hand. Dropping 8m here to lock in the ryanmen gives you the greatest flexibility. 3m serves as a strong floating tile which can let you drop one of the remaining pairs (in which case you'd almost certainly drop west) for a ryanmen final wait, but the 1p/west shanpon is perfectly fine too.

You are waiting for what you can assume to be 7 tiles of 3 different kinds, sure. But consider the following; 5 of these tiles are dora. People are likely to hoard these tiles, and then push since it gives them enough information to know the average deal-in value of a concealed hand. With that in mind, your chances are: 1. Tsumo win. Most likely 5200. 2. 2m deal-in for crap.

Should you riichi this? The answer is yes. But winning by anything else but tsumo is unlikely. Your waits make for expensive tiles and more so with a player pushing for honitsu/chinitsu.

>> No.20774891

As someone in tokujou, it wouldn't be viable at all. Avoiding last becomes everything in Tenhou. Also what makes it even more risky is that 4th is the dealer. It is late game, there are 1 out of 7 dora visible, and it looks like his hand might be souzu honitsu/chinitsu. The dealer can easily hit any one of you and tank you to 4th if you're not careful.

I say that as the "logical" response, but sometimes you have to be a man and go with your gut. I have had a few games where I didn't want to settle for anything less than 1st, and I won them. In fact, I've lost more games due to stupid chance rather than pushing for 1st. You might be more likely to get away with it in joukyuu, too. Sometimes you just have to say fuck it and have fun.

Your statement proves itself wrong, "lower level" players are likely the only demographic to hit the free sex button %100 of the time.

This makes me rage. Especially when their hand is 3-han with a good wait, and they are behind. If you just called riichi you would've had mangan!!! You would be in first! What are you doing?

I got a million renchans in the first game, it was cake. In the second, shimocha got a riichi menhon rinshan chun (+something) baiman, and from then on it was all about getting second. I dealt into something stupid from toimen and was close to getting last, but then kamicha dealt into toimen even harder and I got third easily. Last game, kamicha was leading hard, it was my oyaban, I called for a honitsu, end shape: hatsu chun shanpon. Kamicha draws it, tsumogiris it, and I basically won then and there. Toimen had the two chuns and the other hatsu. It's pretty cool that he didn't discard either of them to me. It was funny when shimocha riichied with his 1000 points.

Also I realized how funny it is when actual parents get the oyaban. Or when they play with their children and the children get to be the oyas.

I feel you are kinda anon which will get better at riichi just by doing 100 sit ups for every third place taken.
