I've recently watched the first season of EF, I saw the first episode a long time ago and thought it was shit but not too distant in the past there was a thread here about the VN and people were saying the anime was pretty good.

I really didn't like the first episode of the anime, visually. It seemed like they were trying too hard to incorporate different styles, and it ended up being something I didn't personally appreciate. Does it improve?

No, I did NOT.

Though as the series went on and Ranka kept doing dumber and dumber things, I didn't really care about whether she ended up with Alto or not. Also I dislike Alto and Sheryl as characters. Ranka was neat except for relationship stuff.

Everything felt drawn out and yet so many aspects of the story were left unexplained. The characters were shallow and backgrounds were weak. Again TERRIBLE, horrible, music; on more than one occasion it gave me a headache. It was a chore to watch the series, and not until the very end did the events ALMOST make it feel worth my time.

I respect you opinion, bro. But I personally feel that Simoun has one of the best anime OSTs ever made (along with Giant Robo) and a very satisfying ending that provided food for thought.

I understand how it can be irritating to have loose ends, but when I watched Simoun they felt more like purposeful ambiguities. I actually found Aeru to be an extremely interesting character... but I suppose I wouldn't say she's got a whole lot of depth (again, I felt that was purposeful in her case). The other characters were a bit stereotypical, but since they were well-executed (in my opinion) I felt no need to complain. The backgrounds, when they weren't done in watercolour, were fine as DEEN goes. They didn't bother me overmuch. The music was jarring at times, but I liked that. I liked the fact that it jumped out at me. I didn't necessarily agree with some of their scene-BGM matches, but I suppose that amused me as well. I didn't find it a chore to watch the series at all, but that's definitely subjective.

Somewhat. I've seen everything there, and it makes me realize that we had our stinker shows back in the 90's as well. Some of the stuff in that picture really was tripe, and it bugs me to see amazing things like Lodoss OAV and Utena next to them.

Yeah, it was all very planned. I remember when a /jp/ Anon said he finished watching Simoun, and he couldn't stop thinking about the show afterwards. That's how the series made me feel as well.
