Having returned to my home country a week ago, I felt like Akiba had become even more tourist oriented with groups of disgusted looking westerners taking selfies and videos on the streets, blocking path of everyone else.

Mandarake was still a great store to visit, managed to find lots of albums and manga that I otherwise couldn't even find on the internet.

I had fun with it. Still really sad that I visited the only touhou dedicated store I could find there and found it to be a tiny empty store low on stock selling basically a few t shirts and posters. Honest, uncontrarian opinion:
Akihabara is an obvious tourist trap, but it's still very possible to have some fun there. Most of the big stores have utterly massive collections of dojinshi there and even the most niche character goods can be found on a shelf in some 7th floor store. The food's alright, if you want something better be prepared to wait for a seat. I never had a problem getting gyudon or shrimp tempura within fifteen minutes of ordering.

If it's your first time going, carve out an afternoon/evening (add on a couple hours if you also want to play in the arcades) to window shop, look at the neon sights and take pictures on the main boulevards and around the JR station. Go shopping at Toranoana (which has three different store fronts in Akiba IIRC), Mandarake and Melonbooks - doujin artists will often sell their new works exclusively at one of the stores. Don't bother with any of the cafes or anything related to idolshit. You can do everything worthwhile in Akiba in a single day without having to go back (except for Comiket exclusives). Save money by getting supper at Yoshinoya or FamilyMart afterwards

It was just weird because she took my hand and led me through a couple of alleys into this unmarked building and then we walked through a lot of empty rooms before getting on an elevator and continuing to the place. Have you been to Nakano Broadway or Otome Road? They're both literally one train ride from Akihabara (though you can get to Nakano faster by changing trains).

Filled with tourists and many stores sell same generic products in addition to Japan souvenir shops, although I liked LAOX since it manages to be that without your I LOVE TOKYO shirts.

There also plenty of stores that specialize in less tourist interest related otaku thing, like Mandarake, which sells used goods from almost everything topic you can think of. Walking through it felt like a time travel to a different world when you enter higher floors with old Japanese toys, card games, video games etc.

I think Akiba has devolved into tourist trap but it's still by far the best place to find any otaku interest related goods. Go there with a Japanese friend if you can speak Japanese and you should have lots of fun since he can show you around for harder to find places you might not stumble upon by yourself.

I've been there so many times now it still feels good.

The main streets are every year populated with more and more tourists, the downside is theres tons more tourists.

The honestly unexpected side was that Softmap that converted into a BIC Camera a year and half ago, I was mad when it fist happened I mean that was literally the poster child for Akihabara turning into a Tourist destination, a game/figure oriented store turning into a basically super market.

Yet at the same time they did a great job, you can now buy Metro Passes there, you can buy sims, you can buy 101 variety of sake and all the tourist crap I actually want as souvenirs, so it's a double edged sword.

But any true Akihabara goer knows that Akiba is in the small shops around the place. Things like COSPA that are hidden away form tourists and only the people that are actually interested in this shit know.

Like take エックス秋葉原本店 that little store under the bridge of the station to the south that store is fantastic when it comes to figures, then you got 駿河屋 秋葉原駅前店 thats also awesome. Theres a lot of tresures to be had.

Nakano broadway is also amazing but I still feel Akihabara beats it because of volume.

Its a fun place. You can find some really cool stuff at Mandarake there(though I prefer the Shibuya one) and there's a cool cafe where you can order drinks and shoot airsoft guns. Though the Maid Dreamin' jingle gets really annoying and sticks in your head thanks to those stands being on almost every corner.

Yeah. It's alright. I think going to Japan specifically to go to Akihabara will make for a disappointing trip, but incorporating it into a broader trip would be a good idea.

Almost all stores in Akiba range from 7-8 floors. Each floor is dedicated to different things, with upper floors usually reserved for adult content. Many stores that sell manga are similar to each other in both products they sell and layout, but stores that specialize in doujin content have more differences.

I keep hyping up Mandarake because this one floor for each subject happens there too, but each floors themes are a lot more specialized and have products that you couldn't find from internet even if you tried. I walked through the store with my Japanese friend and everything from floor 4 above was pure nostalgia for him since you had old collectible card games, toys, video games, DVDs and the list goes on.

LAOX is good for quality souvenirs.

The great thing about Akiba is you have several otaku-related retailers packed together. If there's a particular book or CD you wanted then you have several potential stores within eyesight of each other. That said you're going to Akihabara to kill the day shopping or to visit an expensive gimmick cafe. Practically speaking a good portion of my purchases when I was in Tokyo could have been made in Ikebukuro and saved myself the train fare

Harajuku is literally dead. I occasionally go there and Takeshita-doori to look around and it's always full of tourists and almost no locals. It's a meme even worse than Akiba nowadays. Overpriced "artsy" clothing stores selling mainstream "whacky" shit. Boring and overcrowded as hell.

My personal Akihabara alternative, honestly, is Ikebukuro. You can find a lot of interesting shops there, however there's also a huge focus towards Yaoi-centered doujins which I am totally not into.

I was there last October. Personally I think October is the best month to go there if you don't care about the sakura blossom season. Not many tourists and still summer-like temperature. I stayed for a month and we almost had 30C degrees the entire month, only towards the end it went down to ~23-25ish. It rained for a total of 3-4 days across the entire month so it was a real treat too.

Advice on where to go and what to avoid? Personally I didn't like Shibuya and Shinjuku. Too crowded and too touristy, Shinjuku at night especially is full of tourist traps and actual scams. People trying to trick you and especially don't go with africans or random strangers trying to get you to visit their club. It's usually a scam and you risk of getting mugged/robbed/cheated/drugged up.

Other than that, depends what your interests are. I like parks and nature so I spent a lot of time just walking randomly around with Google Maps open and moving from a green area to the next. I had an absolute blast walking ~30km along the Edogawa banks for the entire day, looking at kids playing baseball on a sunny weekend, fishermen rowing their boats along the river and eventually stumbled upon a massive park full of locals (absolutely no tourists) just walking their dogs, playing around, fishing, etc. It was awesome.

I also strongly recommend Odaiba and the digital art museum.

Personally it became my favorite because I enjoyed TNM was enjoyable, not too big and good content with quality museum store. Parkside Cafe was very good for its price and the park itself was reasonably sized. Plenty of comedians and magicians making shows for children was entertaining to spectate.

Yeah Yoyogi park is a must visit. It's right next to Harajuku/Takeshita-doori and you literally walk into this kick ass forest with a temple at the center and an archery dojo a bit farther in. In the summer heat it's a breah of fresh air as you're literally towered by trees everywhere. The city just disappears.
