What's also interesting is that most foreigners who go to Japan come in with ambivalent impressions. However, after living there for a while, they come out with a very good impression.

However, foreigners coming into Korea have neutral attitudes since they don't know anything about it. However, we are ashamed of this and embarassed. I pulled out an atlas looking for examples, and found there's a Bay of Korea (between China and North Korea) plus the Korea Strait as shown on OP's map, so Koreans should STFU. Besides the fact that the sea in question borders Russia in addition to Korea (I propose it be renamed the Sea of Vladivostok instead!), the fact that it separates Japan from the mainland (and Japan separates it from the rest of the Pacific, if Japan wasn't there, there would be hardly anything to define it), makes Japan more relevant to its naming. Same with the English Channel.

If anyone should complain, it's Madagascar, with the body of water separating it from the mainland being named the Mozambique Channel.

JAPAN is located where at least FOUR TECTONIC PLATES meet: the Eurasian Plate, the Filipino Plate, the North American Plate, and the Pacific Plate.

At the center of Japan (Honshu) is a triple junction where three subduction zones are involved (the Eurasian Plate, the North American Plate and the Filipino Plate), thereby making it the most unstable location on the planet. A final fault rupture of about a 1000km in length is gradually building up -- as we speak.

That's part of the reason they distort history and covet their neighbors' islands so badly (despite all the evidences to their disadvantage) -- they can't even develop their own seabeds (for natural gas, etc.) without risking sinking their entire territory. Anyhow, of course a commoner wouldn't need to learn more than a few thousands (!) kanjis, but what would you do if you came across a new one you had never seen? Would you be able to recognize it, let alone know how to pronounce it without the need of furiganas walking you through?
In other languages you're guaranteed to be never met with such problems. Whether it is Latin letters, Hangul, Cyrillic or whatever else, after you've got those <30 characters down there's nothing else standing between you and being able to read everything.

To a Japanese though, it is immediate if a character is badly written, awkwardly proportioned and all that. Their upbringing involves learning to write a language based on aesthetically pleasing symbols.

The Japanese written language is shit. It's not phonetic and characters have multiple readings. Chinese characters have their benefits, but each character should only have 1 reading. Hangul is a perfect example of a good written language. You can fit a whole word into one text space, and it's phonetic.
