Every human being has a pool of active vocabulary that's noticeably smaller than their passive vocabulary. Thus, authors will often use the same pool of words for their writing. THUS, ignoring special terms and names, you get a lot of their pool very quickly.
Don't you ever hear people say that NHK News gets easier as you do it? It's because they tend to use the same words across articles. The same goes for many light novels.

Fine, real answer. Visual component of manga removes need for descriptions of actions, processes, etc. You're short changing yourself on vocab and grammar by 'reading' what is equivalent to a dialogue when you could get much more from novels.

when you learn kanji, do you learn the symbol, symbol and most common reading, or the symbol and both the kun and on readings?

i was thinking of scribbling in the on and kun readings (and just the most common if it has more than one on'yomi) into the Heisig book to look at on my commutes, and then review with anki in the evening. is that a decent plan?

It's important to note it's not just "read", it's "read more". Reading a couple of pages in Japanese every now and again isn't enough. You have to read a lot, or rather, you have to get a lot of exposure to the language. 7 years of reading is nothing if you read a total of like 10 manga volumes in that time or something. For reference I feel bad if I don't read a book (not an LN, an actual book) every couple days. When reading an LN series I try to get through one a day. Manga is 10 volumes a day minimum. Basically, read more is about volume - think about how much context and media a native has consume, and you should know how long it takes to get competently fluent. You gotta read more, anon. More.

Well, I didn't mean to recommend that speed to a beginner. Obviously it'll take time to speed up to the point where that's possible. I just meant to give a general frame of reference for where someone who has spent 7 years learning the language should probably be. (I'm almost at 5 btw)

>> No.20574534

I learned the radical first. I didn't bother with heisig and I also didn't bother to know which reading is on and kun (if you see them so many times the readings will eventually stick). I once tried deconstructing kanji - by Joyou levels and then writing them by grades - and the readings still didn't stuck. Reading more (or probably doing anki) can help but I don't think writing down individual readings without context is going to be helpful.

All you have demonstrated with your reasoning is that manga is "less reading" (qualitatively), not that manga is "not reading".
On this I agree with you fully, because as you said, the narrator gets way less of a spotlight, or can even be omitted completely.
So far you have shown that manga is reading of a lesser caliber, but have yet to make a case for how it doesn't qualify under the category of "reading".

Command Form

This command form is quite rude so you should use it with caution (if at all). As we learned just in this chapter, there are many other more polite ways to make a request.

Command form conjugation rules
For ru-verbs: Replace the last 「る」 with 「ろ」
Example: 食べる + ろ = 食べろ
For u-verbs: Replace the last u-vowel sound with the e-vowel equivalent
Example: 買う + え = 買え
Exceptions:
する しろ
くる こい
くれる くれ (exception for this conjugation only, not an exception verb)

Pretty much when it comes to reading, though my production is poor. I can write a message and clearly convey my thoughts without looking too bad but it's usually pretty clear I'm a gaijin. Sometimes I can accidentally be rude, too, like saying ~ばよろしい to a business partner without realizing how rude that comes off until later.

It's kind of like, when you reach a high level of competency with reading, you can read your own writing and see what doesn't make sense, given that you actually understand the words and so on. But it's easy to forget a word you need to use, or to not realize that there was a better way to word it, and still struggle in that way.

From my own experience, I think it's clear that reading and listening a lot will directly improve your production. But I think production practice is, eventually, a necessity to speak fluently. However I am a shut-in and only ever speak when I need to for business reasons, so I'm stuck in this not-really-fluent zone.

I just don't know what to do.

I remember having learned about the DJT threads 4/5 years ago and decided to give it a try with learning Japanese, but after a few months, i ended up getting burnt out by the kangi and its variety of meanings, that i just had to stop and take a break. Unfortunately, this break resulted in a stall, which resulted in me not studying Japanese anymore, until finally, i decided to give up on it.

It wasn't all in vain though, since i did get to learn a bit of 日本語。まあ、ちょっとだけ。

Nowadays, I've been concentrating on learning how to draw with the hope of becoming an animator and create my own animated series someday.

I extremely love cartoons, which is the main reason of why i'm pursuing this, and also because i want to contribute to my country of origin in the field of animation.

But honestly, i just don't know anymore.

I would love nothing more in this world than to create my very own cartoon one day, but i also don't want to live a life and end up dying without having learnt the glorious language of Nippon.

What the fuck should i do?

I'm a HS dropout neet who's becoming 26 this year. TWENTY SIX.

I'm also going back to HS this year to get my education and hopefully go up to university, even.

I have to make a choice here and now.

Do i pursue the path of animation and cartoons?

Or do i pursue the path of ベストlanguage and すごいアンド可愛いproducts?

Number one, never try and type Japanese again. Number two, do whatever the fuck you want, retard.

Animation is a terrible field to try and get into, even more so as a 26 year old. But if it's what you want to do, do it. Otherwise you'll just be here in 5 years whining about the life you could have lived. Or you'll be here in 5 years whining about how all you do is braindead tweening work on garbage you hate.

Nothing is stopping you from doing both. Literally all you had to do to learn Japanese was to avoid "taking a break", and you can manage that with any workload in the world because learning nip takes 20 minutes a fucking day. When people say that you should skip kanji study they mean you should learn them alongside vocabulary, i.e. look at a card like 犬 and learn that it's read いぬ and means dog. For a compound it'd be something like 犬歯, which means canine (the tooth). Sometimes you can gather what the kanji mean individually based on the word - yes, the latter kanji means tooth - other times the compound's meaning is more abstract. Individual kanji study helps with those more abstract cases, but in the end you'll learn most common kanji's usual meanings through regular vocabulary study anyways, either because those are the first words you're introduced to or because you get a pretty good grasp of all the nuances of a kanji after already having seen it in three other vocabulary cards.
If you're on android, just search for anki.

Without even getting into the benefit from having a monitored-ish daily routine going you don't want to break, you can't really argue against there being a time frame in a learner's progress during which it pays off to do isolated vocabulary study. Debating where the line is drawn is silly since it depends on what your grammar knowledge allows you to read how smoothly, which itself then plays into how comfortable you are with having to look up a lot of words while reading. I'd go ahead and bet that there are more people from djt that did anki for longer than you'd recommend and still ended up learning japanese than there are people that stopped after core2k with the intention to make up for it by reading more and actually pulled through with it - percentage wise, of course.

The knowledge of there being other learners around, studying and making progress (mostly) just like you are, can have a pretty big impact on sticking through with it. I think it's safe to say that the more active DJT posters are more likely to make it than the less active ones, but yeah, that's kinda stretching it I admit.

I read that fast, but I also have a lot of spare time in a day and have been reading as my primary method of learning Japanese for the past 3 years.

I was lectured by a friend and I feel like I should clarify that a wageslave normie working 8 hours a day plus commute can't really be expected to read a book a day, which is a fair point. You need not only the time to read a book, but also enough free time to do things other than reading such that you aren't dedicating all of your free time to do one singular thing.

Have you ever bought and held a physical light novel, by the way? I have, and they're laughably small. It feels like you could crush them in your hand if you aren't careful. I stack my light novels next to my western novels and a few fantasy books like Malazan equal the height of an entire light novel series stack. It's a good thing that most people here read scans/ebooks, because holding a tiny light novel and taking days/weeks to get through it would be a huge motivation hit. Once you get to even like, half the speed of a Japanese native, it's trivial to jump on the couch with a LN and finish in a single session.

I'm still just beginning my true novel journey (mainly read VNs up until now) but in my experience, nah, there's not much of a difference. It's all about the subject matter and author. Light novels can even be harder since they cover all sorts of fantastical concepts whereas more mature titles are more down to earth. Assuming we're not talking about like, pre-war literature here, which I'm completely inexperienced with. Weeb for life.

I just finished 1st season of the 1st series yesterday. I liked it until I realised how scripted it was, plus one of the girls who were there after the show said how they were directed what to say and spent like 1 hour a shooting day in that house.
It's a fake show that you can enjoy if you take it as fiction drama.

>-Lauren explains to Metropolis Japan "It's probably the least real reality show." She says we weren't filmed 24/7 and the crew would come around and hour during the day and a few hours at night. It was filmed "like a japanese drama"
>-Lauren states it was really awkward at times, when we weren't filming we were told not to talk by the producers. She says "But seriously what are we supposed to do for the entire day?" So obviously we talked and did stuff, so that caused a lot of tension between people living there and the producer, so it was stressful.
>-She explains "it is non scripted but at the same extremely scripted" also we only filmed a couple of hours a day but not every day. What you say is what they want us to talk about. "They don't tell us exactly what to say. Though they know what kind of story, they want to edit in their minds so they force that content to be created."
>-Lauren states the editing afterwards gave the producers a lot of power to manipulate the drama, which made watching the show unbearable for all its cast members.
>This part of the article has now been deleted by Metropolis Japan.

Found this add-on while looking for something which would provide functionality similar to LingQ's highlighting of known and semi-known words (seems like it would help a lot with noticing & learning words outside of Anki), but it was only released a few days ago and has only a single user so far so I'm very wary of installing it.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/highlightthis/

There is a version of this add-on for Chrome with nearly 30,000 users, and the maker of this add-on has the same name as the guy who made the Chrome add-on, but I have no way of knowing that it's actually the same person and not just someone who is impersonating him in order to trick people into installing malware.

What do you think? Worth the risk?

I was thinking it would be good for stuff like HTML-formatted LNs where you could have it highlight all the words you know on the page in one color and all the words you kind of know in another color to help you notice them.

It would also give you an idea of how hard a particular text is likely to be for you based on how many words on the page don't get highlighted when you scan it.

Holy shit, I didn't know someone else was looking for the same thing.
The only functionally I envy about lingq is this highlight feature, and I wondered if there was some add-on that could provide the same ability. But this isn't worth the price and the text reader is inconvenient.
So far all the highlight add-ons I tried were disappointing, either non recursive or they too inconvenient.
It would be great is this feature was available with yomichan.

>> No.20580784

yomichan can only make an attempt at finding a word boundary when you show it what character to start from and still makes mistakes
better algorithms probably exist but are they fast enough i cant tell you that

>It would be great is this feature was available with yomichan.
It would be really good if you could tie it in to the Anki support offered by Yomichan and other Rikai-like extensions.

Yomichan can tell whether a word is in your deck already or not via the AnkiConnect add-on, and presumably if it can read the fields of your cards it can also read other information about them such as their intervals. It would just be a matter of adding in a feature telling Yomichan to highlight those words which you already have in your deck, and giving a separate highlight color to Learn, Young and Mature cards on the page.

It's times like this that I wish I knew a programming language.

It gives you the ability to notice words you are currently learning, it is sort of like a review with anki, you stop for a moment, and use your brain cells to recall the meaning of the word.
If you didn't highlight this word, you could have thought this was a new word, and just mindlessly checked the pronunciation with yomichan.

This polyglot GOD knows more than 12 languages! He learned all those languages just by talking to other Native people through Skype. Studying? Are you fucking kidding me? What are you a fucking dork? It's all about immersion my friend. 100% immersion. Look at this video of the polyglot God Benny Lewis where he speak PERFECT Japanese. Damn I wish I were him. Speaking Japanese that good! Well guys in the end do not study,do not practice with flashcards and doo not study reading and writing Kanji. What reading and writing Kanji is important you say? this is the 21st century! Does anyone know why japanese like scans as apposed to epubs? epubs are easier to strip of drms than to scan a book, plus to have a good scan you destroy the book in the process. on top of that epub files are smaller than images and are more universal in terms of using devices like kindles?

The only reason I can think of is posting images of pages you like on 4chan but that is like maybe less than 10 people who want to do that.

But yeah if you want my opinion on that then fuck the word hanzi because it is an invention of weeb halfwits who saw that 漢字 was transliterated as hanzi in pinyin. I don't know the Chinese language, but I've seen enough to say that firstly Chinese people say things in English if they can instead of any kind of pinyin, and secondly i think they call their characters just 字 most of the time. Therefore this "hanzi" is one of the most un-Chinese thing to exist that masquerades as Chinese to the unwitting.

Sure, but the biggest is the first, unlike Japanese speakers who are, among other things, drowning in wasei eigo the Chinese have a clean break between Chinese and English and do not simply carry things over. To see how much the average djt knows about grammar
I'll spell it out for you
Take a verb, conjugate it to causative-short form
conjugate the causative-short to causative-passive-short form
Conjugate causative-passive-short to negative
Conjugate causative-passive-short-negative to polite form.

An hour a day study is 365 hours. You should be closer to N3 than N4 at that point with 4000 vocabulary using at least 1000 kanji.

Speed things up by watching more anime and dramas and reading manga and light novels for fun. Also, don't do anything that requires you to regurgitate Japanese like those stupid Genki exercises or any fill in the blank or translation type questions. Just stick to comprehension.

I have about 4000 vocabulary, not sure how many kanji. But I can't pass n3 listening exam yet, the words are too fast and I miss 1 word then everything is fucked. I'm about n3 when it comes to reading though.

How am I supposed to get the last grains of rice from my plate with chop sticks? Since leaving even one is in bad taste I assume I'm supposed to sit there autistically fishing them up one by one with great difficulty?
