seems to me exceeding human performance doesnt mean much with narrow and specific tasks
the places they fail are also completely unlike the places a human would fail
this is relevant because humans can deal with language mistakes that a human would make
as i said its reasonable to expect very high quality machine translation of intentionally precise and clear writing
i dont believe that going far beyond that is possible without general intelligence under whatever definition will hold in the future
with translation of for example creative writing the differences in language become much more significant
it can be much more difficult to say if a translation is accurate in the first place
the best you can do sometimes is attempt to give the reader similar mental imagery and similar feelings
that goes beyond correct grammar and matching literal meanings and finding equivalent sayings which are more approachable goals
i expect interesting developments in 20 years regardless

basically if you think passing your test data means Jack Shit to translating anything but very simple statements that have no context like "push the button after turning on the power" then you just don't understand translation or machine learning

>> No.20538172

Mate the guide is like 350 pages or some shit. What's generally suggested here is to build up a bit of vocabulary before you start reading (500-1500 or so, your choice) just so you don't lose your sanity at the beginning. You can learn those words through the core2k deck. Concurrently, you should be reading through tae kim. It won't stick anyways but if you blast through it in a day or two you won't even comprehend anything which is the point.

Remember, if you commit to this you will be studying the language for years and it's nigh impossible to permafuck yourself at the very beginning stage. Just get some vocab down, go through tae kim at your own pace and start reading as soon as possible. The rest will take care of itself.

ようこそ resolutionfags. reminder that the guide is trash. Here is what you do:

start watching raw anime(completely give up subs)

learn hiragana/katakana(should take 2 hours in total, don't try to perfect it)

skim tae kim(should take like 4-5 hours total)

download yomichan or rikai on your browser of choice

read ~30 nhk easy news articles (or not)

"read" furigana manga/text hookable vns until it is relatively easy like yotsubato/love hina/your favorite trash shounen/eroge etc.

read a light novel series that is completely adapted into an anim completely e you have seen ie toradora/oreimo/oregairu etc.

now read whatever you want (your still not good until you have watched a lot of anime and a lot of novels)

keep reading and watching raws until fluent

reminder:
never use rtk/anki/textbooks
this is just a recommended reading guide and if you really love manga or eroge or something like that just do that.

any questions?

I appreciate the sentiment you're going for, but the guide you posted is absolute dogshit and doesn't understand how people feel, act, think, etc at all. For instance
>learn hiragana/katakana(should take 2 hours in total, don't try to perfect it)
The majority of people will be unable to do this. They will struggle hard, fail, lose confidence in themselves, and so on. If we pretend people will take this guide seriously, you're going to lose a lot of people on this step that's the first real and fundamental one. I get that you want to emphasize getting them into your short term memory and then memorizing them over time, rather than trying to get them perfect before moving on, but that's not how people work. They'll cram, fail to remember anything, and just feel like shit in general. You need to give beginner learners at LEAST a week to learn hiragana/katakana. And this isn't a big deal, either. In a years long study journey, it makes zero difference whether it takes 2 hours or 1 week to learn kana.
>skim tae kim(should take like 4-5 hours total)
Again, I appreciate the sentiment. It is important to not obsess with perfectionism and to keep moving. But "4-5" hours total for grammar? Skimming a single grammar guide and that's it? Hell fucking no. The vast, vast, vast majority of learners will absolutely get destroyed on this step and hate everything. Going from 0 knowledge of Japanese grammar to having enough to meaningfully read something, even the babiest shit imaginable, takes time and effort. Blasting through Tae Kim and then trying to read will be like slamming your face against a brick wall, and it's not nearly the most efficient method. It's the same as kana: You have to give learners time. In a years long study journey, dedicating a week or two to Tae Kim is not a big deal, and it helps tremendously. Heck, I'm pretty sure I spent at least four hours on the fucking の page alone when I started because it was so rough adjusting to Japanese grammar. Basically, if a learner actually takes your awful advice and skims Tae Kim in so little time, they're going to slam their face into reading, fail miserably, and just go back to Tae Kim to take their time learning what they should have already taken the time to get familiar with.

Japanese learners aren't ubermensch who can go from 0 Japanese knowledge, to knowing kana in 2 hours, to having a decent grasp on Japanese grammar in 7 total hours. They need time. Starting Japanese is a period of brutal difficult due to knowing so little, and encouraging people to make things harder by speeding through the fundamentals will result in nothing but miserable learners making zero meaningful progress and giving up.

>read ~30 nhk easy news articles (or not)
>"read" furigana manga/text hookable vns until it is relatively easy like yotsubato/love hina/your favorite trash shounen/eroge etc.
>read a light novel series that is completely adapted into an anim completely e you have seen ie toradora/oreimo/oregairu etc.

These are all just arbitrary, I imagine this is what you did but there's really no way any of these are particularly constructive in a guide. Basically, the only thing that matters is...

>now read whatever you want

People reading what they want. Introduce the tools to read various things (rikai, texthookers, dictionaries, etc) and then let people read what they want. 30 NHK easy news articles? Are you trying to bore them to death? A light novel series with an anime adaptation you've seen? What if they don't want to? Etc. Ultimately, there's no point trying to recommend specific media like this. The best thing for motivation is to read what you want to, full stop, nothing else matters.

>keep reading and watching raws until fluent
Literally the only good thing in your guide.

TL;DR Your guide is complete shit and will not help literally a single person learn Japanese. If anyone takes this guide seriously and follows your advice, they will fail with almost guaranteed certainty. I can only pray that your insane and stupid speed requirements scare off any legitimate beginners before they fuck themselves over.

thanks for the feedback. but i would argue that if you don't already know kana than you don't want to learn japanese.

also when you have no japanese experience studying grammar is useless as no matter how much you re read sentences you just wont get it. it takes expossure to the language to understand grammar. The point of skimming tae kim is to get a basic feel for sentence structure and to be able to understand what different types of words will look like not to learn any grammar.

also I said my reading guide is more of just a personal suggestion that I feel is a fairly natural way to progress in terms of difficulty and even said if you have a specific interest to just read that.

Uuuh, this sure is a biased perspective wherein you disregard large swaths of potential learners just because they haven't tried to/failed to learn Japanese before. Everyone starts somewhere, you know.

I would disagree that when you have no Japanese experience studying grammar is useless. You're not going to get fluent studying grammar, but you're still going to learn and get more familiar with it. Like, did I master の from re-reading the Tae Kim page on it for hours? No, but I got more familiar with it, and when I read things afterwards I was more equipped to deal with what I was looking at. Which is basically the whole idea when it comes to reading a grammar guide, becoming more equipped to deal with what you're going to see in the wild. If a theoretical learner crams kana, skims Tae Kim, and then jumps into reading as you suggest (not to mention the complete lack of reference to kanji which is what every learner is going to be shitting their pants about), then they're just gonna look at a wall of incomprehensible Japanese characters and feel like killing themselves. They'll just be completely unprepared. They will barely know where to begin, much less be capable of actually reading the sentences.

I have a friend who did something similar to what you suggest (wouldn't read Tae Kim or anything no matter how many times I recommended it, since he had taken a college course and felt he didn't need it). It took him about thirty minutes to get through each line, looking up every kanji, getting stumped on every grammar point, etc. That's just not efficient learning, but it's what happens when people try to read without solidifying their fundamentals and preparing themselves properly.

I was kinda rude in my first reply, sorry. I got extremely mad after seeing "tae kim (should take like 4-5 hours total)" and really let loose.

こんにちは Djt

I've written a lot of marketing posts for WaniKani over the years. It took me a while to realize it, but one thing I've noticed is that it's really hard to tell the truth. I keep telling it, of course, but I'm starting to understand why most language learning products barrage their customers with messages about howeasyit is to learn a new language. It's just, uh, easier to sell a product that way.

The great thing about the "e-word" is that it's all relative. So, no matter how difficult something is, saying something is easy can never be a lie. Then there are language products that actuallyareeasy. They too push the "it's so easy!" angle in their marketing. The only problem is that when you make learning easy––or even worse, when you make learningfeeleasy––you're not actually learning much at all. You just feel like you are. If you've used anything with multiple choice, self-evaluation, or little-to-no wait times between reviews... you may be getting tricked by awe make it so easy™type resource.

Not sure if that's what's happening? There's a really simple way to test whether or not you're really learning. If your learning's not painful, and if you're not consistently getting a handful of things wrong, then there's a good chance you're not learning.

So that's what I'm up against. Here I am attempting to write my magnum opus of WaniKani marketing copy, but all I can say is "WaniKani is hard." It's going to hurt. You're going to want to quit sometimes. But, you'll actually learn to read~2,000 kanji and ~6,000 vocabulary words.

There is at least one thing that makes WaniKani different (besides just being hard). WaniKani issimple. You sit down. You do your Lessons. You do your Reviews. You repeat. There are nearly 9,000 items for you to learn. It would have been easy for me to just say "here they are, learn them" but we put a lot of sweat, blood, and tears into setting it all up. We wrote mnemonics for everything, which means you can remember more, longer between recalls. We ordered everything so every single itembuilds upon your knowledge of something previous. You never need to learn something completely from scratch. And, we figured out when are the best times for you to recall something so your brain says "hey, this is important, maybe I should really remember it." If you put the work in over months and months, the mnemonic goes away and only fluent recall remains. It won't happen quickly, butit will actually happen, which is more valuable in the end.

But, it takes time. It takes work. It takes you sitting down to do your Lessons and Reviews every day. We're the only Japanese resource out there that made learning kanji simple without making it "easy." Why? Because I actually care about you learning. That's why you have to wait between reviews even when you don't want to. That's why there's no mercy when you get something wrong. That's why there will be times "when you just don't wanna do your reviews..." but, you're going to do them anyways, because you know exactly what you signed up for.

If all that sounds awful, but you still want toactuallylearn how to read Japanese, thenhave a look at our Lifetime account sale. It's $100 off if you upgrade before January 8.

It goes a little deeper than that. I've seen ugly, fat white dudes with girls that are out of their league (but they're still in the 5 - 7 range). Generally speaking:

1) Being greater than the average height (about 5'5 - 5'7")
2) Having a fair complexion
3) Having a hair color that isn't very dark / black
4) Able to speak 日本語 well enough

Will give you a point on the attractiveness scale. So if you're a 2/10 uggo, you can at most reach a 6/10 on the scale. That being said, the most dangerous girls are the ones who exclusively date foreigners, they're all bad news and have serious issues. They're the white-girl equivalent of those who only date black guys because daddy didn't love them enough. They will use and see you as a trophy in their conquest. There's lots of new posters and lurkers in this thread so I think I should help you guys out with the culture here.

The most important figure to remember - whom all regulars here respect - is someone who goes by the name of Matt. He became fluent in Japanese through immersion after a mere 3 years. He's the most gifted Japanese learner on the internet when you factor in his knowledge of Japanese etymology and classical Japanese grammar.

If you have questions on how to learn Japanese then he's the one to ask.

simple doesn't mean easy to understand. think about languages with irregular pronunciation, verbs, extensive case systems. the rules in japanese are simple but that leaves it very open ended. just focus on what each particle is doing and think about the context. and as always read more. you maybe a brainlet but you can learn if you find content you understand. even if you dont understand its accept your best interpretation with the resources you have and move on

>> No.20541711

Man why is it so hard to move on from sentences I can't figure out when I know I'll be able to read more overall which results in faster improvement if I do? One of the things I'm finding with reading is that if I can read a sentence quickly, I can understand it better than the ones that I can't. If I have to keep stopping to look up words, then it's much harder to understand them.
You might read this statement and go, "aha, time to ankidrone," but I dropped that a while ago and am enjoying my studies much more than I was before despite this anecdote.

Read the posts between yours and this one and it’s pretty clear that it’s not just ironic shitposting. The people in this thread are definitely invested in Japanese learning e-celeb culture, possibly even more so than actually learning Japanese. It’s just really weird and bizarre to me. You only get a limited amount of time each day and spending multiple hours of it every day thinking and arguing about which e-celeb is the best or worst at this tiny niche thing they do is about the shittiest way you could spend it. Like next time you find yourself thinking about “Matt’s piss bottle” or something, just immediately drop the thought and read some Japanese instead.

Speaking of this topic, why is Japan's name "NIHON" when NI and HON are both on yomi (foreign) readings? Seems strange to do this. Was "Yamato" kun yomi along time ago?

>> No.20544173

>>20544152
>This 倭 character also has an on'yomi or borrowed Chinese reading of wa. During the reign of Empress Genmei (707–715), the 倭 character with an original Chinese meaning of “midget, dwarf” was replaced with the 和 character that is also read wa, but instead has the more positive meaning of “harmony”, in spellings of the native Japanese term Yamato. The 和 character also has a kun'yomi of yawa, which would have been yaba in ancient times, suggesting another possible phonetic reason to use 和 to spell Yamato (on a softening of the “b”: yaba yama). The 大 character meaning “great” was then prefixed to this.[1] The resulting kanji compound 大和 can also be read with a kun'yomi of Ōyamato[2][3].

>In older texts, this was read as kun'yomi as hi no moto. The on'yomi readings nippon and nihon became more common in the Heian period, with both persisting into modern use.[3] The nihon reading appears to be the most common in everyday Japanese usage.
