I think the general consensus here is that walfas itself is not the source of evil, but rather the fans of walfas are, who desperately try to mimic it or ride the proverbial bandwagon.

'Popular' is a relative term. I suppose his style is probably well known. But you have to remember that most Japanese fans of otaku stuff in general don't even have any idea that there is such a thing as a widespread 'western fanbase', it's surprising to them when they hear for example that there are a multitude of different fansubbing groups for anime. Let alone a fanbase for something like Touhou. Let alone a fanbase for Touhou that produces original content.
