Compared to ippan, I felt at first that joukyuu players were better at defending. Now that I've been playing here for a while, it sometimes feels like people don't defend at all. I'm still not perfect at making decisions, and I do stupid pushes too, but curiously enough I can regain the lost points easily by capitalising on the opponents' aggression.

Yesterday I dealt into a dealer hane in the east round, and I got 3rd, almost 2nd.

Sorry for being useless, all I know is you definitely need to find a team (of 4?), because it has both team and individual rankings, and it should be somehow registered for the participation. I think people hold a few online competitions throughout a year, grab all high rankers competition-less and then go for one more to choose the team. In case if you guys don't even have any championships contact all the bigger clubs and ask if they wanna do it. But if you do, contact the organizers.

Actually the people who play chinkshit are the best candidates to advertise riichi, just look at EMA it's how it was born, due to chinese mahjong enthusiasts. Now they have riichi with a bit of pongs situation but at least it werks, thousands of active members now.
Maybe look through streamers on twitch or youtube and pick a couple of friendly not-tutorial actual gameplay videos for them. + EMA rulebook from their site

I had like 4 normal daisangens but I noticed I already had not one but TWO failed daisangen just because I wasn't able to gather a pair of all things. Basically those were guaranteed shosangen hands but I had no way to know this. Would you play 4 (or 3player) strip mahjong? Dipping below a certain amount of points would mean that you would need to get rid of some clothes, with 0 being completely naked. There could be bonuses, just like shugi chips in jansous, and they could be things like "toimen has to lick your nipples" or whatever.

I could imagine something like 10 cents per 1000 points. Everyone would pay 3 dollars at the start, and then at the end of the hanchan, you would add the uma, oka, and each player would get their points' worth back. Alternatively, you could halve it to get 5 cents/1000, and so on. Sounds like it could work.

What do you mean by "higher rank mahjong"? If someone stays dama for a cheap hand for no reason they're not actually very good and won't get far. You can often easily overtake them with just a single mangan tsumo.

There are occasionally reasons for cheap dama, such as when you're ahead in south 4 or if you're waiting on the genbutsu of an opponent in riichi, or if you've got very good odds of quickly improving your wait and/or value. If these are happening to you then you just need to deal with it, you baka zombie.

I decide to end the game ASAP since I am 1st place by ~11k points. I deal in to the person 2nd place, and I become 2nd place due to having 300 points less than the person I dealt in to.

Bad play. The 4th guy's riichi was a perfect opportunity for you to let the game end. At this point a mangan tsumo (only if you're dealer) or a mangan direct hit from second is the only thing that can drop you to second place. Hoping for 4th place to finish the round is the best scenario case.

10 000+ (if you're not dealer) or 12 000+ (if you're dealer) is a great lead in South 4, it means that if you defend correctly you won't lose your first place unless someone pulls a haneman.

yeah well I often face these situations where I can either leave more blocks open for bigger tile acceptance, or leave safe tiles like pon'd honor tiles and the likes. The problem was not dealing in, but the fact that if I wasn't the first to tenpai, I felt like I had no choice, but to defend.

I think in the game that inspired me to write that comment, kamicha had a point difference where he could take the lead from me with a direct hit mangan, while shimocha was dealer in mangan tsumo range. In this situation, if you have shit haipai and tsumos, then it's basically down to whether the opponents get lucky enough to draw the right tiles for the points they need. Correct me if I'm wrong.
