ITT: should you suppress your power level when in Japan?

I usually keep quiet about liking manga and wota stuff, as I just don't think it's a very interesting topic to even bring up when meeting new people. When in Japan I've found that usually, when I all of a sudden do pick an anime song in the karaoke I get very positive reactions in 70% of the case ("wow! you know so much about Japan!!") and the remaining 30% I get the "lol white otaku" reaction. Some of them feel that once I reveal my true power level they can start pouring out their own otakuism, although, of course, in some cases it's more in the way Japanese people sometimes grab for straws to find some subject to connect through, as in "Oh, you like X manga? ME TOO!" or "Oh, you're from X country? I'VE ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN X COUNTRY!" Usually, I think it feels like they're honestly talking about something they like, though.
Of course, like in any country, it helps that I don't look or act geeky in any way, because when I'm too quick to show any signs of being potentially wota, I usually get the "lol white dork" reaction. Japanese girls often fish for that by mentioning something geeky and see if I know what they're talking about. (as in "oh, you live near Nakano, huh.. have you been to that place where they sell all the minifigs.. what's it called, uh.. uh...") If, on the other hand, I'm the one bringing it and being like "lol you animu dork" when they pick a pokeyman karaoke song, then I'm free to be as good as I want on rythm games or whatever without coming across as a loser.

I once maintained a friendship with a guy from Osaka who knew a lot about manga and anime. He had a lot of the same interests as /jp/ would, and he was interested in the kinds of things I see on here sometimes. I however kept my power level up, even asking what Anime was more than once. I even would make fun of geeks sometimes just to show that I wasn't in the ota community at all...

...eventually he got tired of my nationalism and my general dislike of the xenophobia of his country whenever he brought up the subject of my visiting. I now feel that he thought I was being unusually mean about his culture...

I tend to revert to my defensive "Japan is full of xenophobia and hate for any foreign culture, they hate all outsiders and commit atrocities against their neighboring countries, etc" whenever Japan is brought up by someone speaking to me in real life.

I mostly employed that in answer to the constant starry-eyed reverence most people have around Japanese, but it seems /jp/ knows about it as well(from the Nanking massacre threads and gaijin hate threads).

I can only see that as a response to the general idea of Japan being some huge technological capitol of the world.

My statement is more in response to OP, in which he poses the question if you should act like someone else, and hide certain aspects of your character, soley on the basis that some people may not like you.

Which is bullshit, I guarantee no matter where you go (First world) if you act like yourself (and you are generally likable, ect) you will find someone you can relate with.

There is no reason to go around sprouting weeaboo/otaku bullshit. However, there is also no reason to hide it.

If you are talking to someone, would you have a problem saying something like "Hey, did you see that last (popular franchise) movie/play (popular franchise) game?" any more than "You ever seen (anime, or anime series)?"

If you think otherwise, state why.

I prefer to learn something about others, before I let them know much about me. It's less suppressing who I am (after all I'm still me no matter what a stranger thinks) and more keeping my cards close to my chest. It's easier to move around in the world if people haven't formed negative preconceptions about you.

Usually once they've gotten to know me they have no trouble accepting that I also like wota stuff. If I suspect that they will have a problem, then they have no right to know, and deserve to be manipulated.

>>2039571
>If you think otherwise, state why.
Because:
a.) I probably don't want to hear what they think of it.
b.) It's much less likely that they know of it, or if they have heard of it have formed correct impressions of it.

Fun story. It's an act of balance, I guess. If you mention something TOO geeky, play it off with "yeah, I watched it when I was a kid." If you feel you're putting a distance between the two of you, weigh it up with some obscure reference to a scene in Tokimemo or whatever.

Another thing I do if they ask me if I'm wota is just be like "yeah, I'm the fucking Hokuto Shinken MASTER! ATATATATATATATATATATA"

Otaku = Animu & Mangu fags

Use the terms correctly if you are going to refer to yourself as one. They aren't the same thing. The "w" was added on purpose.

>Aren't you a fine human specimen.
Well really. It's pretty silly to let wota hobbies (and such things) change your opinion of someone. If they're that kind of person, why on earth do they deserve to be given additional knowledge?

I was mostly responding to this:
>If you are talking to someone, would you have a problem saying something like "Hey, did you see that last (popular franchise) movie/play (popular franchise) game?" any more than "You ever seen (anime, or anime series)?"

I would only feign ignorance if I didn't like the person, or if I thought they were testing me. If it's the former, I don't want to give them any excuse to speak to me further. If it is the latter, then are the one who started playing games and I don't see how I can be faulted for playing in return.

I don't really have a definitive source but

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wota

Wota is short for wotaGEI or otaGEI which is an idol fag. Animefags are otaku, there is no "w" because the "w" came with the fans who slapped it on the beginning of it for no reason. My point being that it is ironic that you made that mistake because otagei put the "w" at the beginning so they would stand apart from regular otaku and have a distinction.

>>2039612
>If the person is all "OMG I H8 SCIFI, UR LAME", then fuck them. Would you even enjoying talking with the person?
I don't really expect the response would be that extreme... but at the small talk stage, the knowledge that I am interested in such things could distort their impression of me, even if they're a decent person. They will have some idea (probably incorrect) of what 'those people' are like, and I do not want to be tainted by those ideas.

Point still stands about it. If that is the way the person is, they will find something they dislike about you and stick with it. Boss, coworker, or otherwise. タク」という語の使用をやめ、「ヲタ」「**ヲタ」という語を使っている。

Otaku just changed the original 'o' to a different 'o' (often romanized wo), because they didn't really like the image associated with otaku anymore.

(According to Nakagawa Shouko, the change occurred because of people reacting to the otaku fascination created by densha otoko, but wikipedia doesn't seem to agree with that.)

Yes, but put wota into Niconico or Google and you will see they are completely different. Wotagei is a "part" (I guess) of otaku-ism. It was born from it, after all isn't otaku just akin to saying an obsession/hobby? Anyone can be an anything otaku.

>>2039647
>>otaku (オタク) and wotaku (ヲタク) are used interchangeably, depending on the mood and personal style of the poster.
Wota is short for WOTAGEI, not wotaku. The term wotaku only comes from the fact that ヲ can be translated as "wo" or "o". I'm talking about Wotagei being a part of Otaku-ism in which your main focus is idols. herp derp.

wotagei/otagei =/= wotaku/otaku

The pressure to assimilate and fit in neatly among japan expats is always so funny; in a way they reveal themselves simply by the fact that they're always thinking about these things and not letting loose.

Well, I do see people reading eromanga on the trains, every now and then though, and sure, I discuss Gundam and quote Raoh's death-speech with my 60+ year old teachers. That half sentence where the word manga happened to be mentioned is not specifically what the thread was about. You shouldn't read things so literally.
