How can do I make my pets powerful enough to deal with rogue bosses in early game? I keep trying to move cargos around and I just keep dying.

Why are you messing with cargo at all? You'd be better off trying to find oracle scrolls in the puppy cave or something.
Anyway, you're not going to be able to deal with rogues early on. Your best bet is to immediately read a scroll of teleport and run for it.

For those who don't have that ability early on, a rod of teleport is also a viable option, and from my experience they're not too hard to come by.

Even a rod of teleport has a chance of failing - at that low level even a wasted turn can get you creamed. Scrolls can't fail outside of being blinded or confused.

Dungeons. Cheesing Level 1-3 dungeons can net you some decent cash to tide you by. If you're still too wimpy to do even that, you're gonna have to make do with lucky Before it's too late or Escort to Noyel (and back) quests.

Does the compatibility trick work if the gum, cola, and new dungeons have no image? Every time I find a cola or gum it’s a big colored square. Best and lake dungeons are invisible. I’m using the most recent version of CG +.

early game I sell staves. Then do hunting quests within the same gold range. (If its too high I know it will be dangerous)
