This is a Japanese language learning thread for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.

If you have no interest in the above or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

>Does that include reading and listening? Diplomats may have read and listened.
All methods do.
>Of course. But a lot are similar.
I wouldn't say a lot. Unlike you, I also know Japanese. It seems like it would be a lot, but it's not. A lot of basic compounds are completely different, and some in cases can fuck you. 手紙 is a classic example.
>Where's the more recent and better data? Doesn't exist.
Just because newer data doesn't exist doesn't mean that you should base your opinions off of data that is now invalid.
>No, you're misunderstanding. My argument is that Japanese is more difficult than other languages.
It's not.
>I provided evidence that it is. Your counter is that you learned faster than these US diplomats, thus they were using inefficient methods.
No, my counter is that they were using inefficient methods, and that with more modern methology the time to learn a new language is virtually neutralized.
>What is your evidence?
You can do RTK in two months with a SRS, and then you're essentially like a Chinese person learning Japanese. I did it, and plenty of others have.

I stopped studying mandarin when I was only a beginner so I knew only some hundreds of words, but for instance when I learned the Japanese 現在 I remembered of the Mandarin 现在, where 现 is the simplified version of the kanji 現 and by chance that word is read xiàn zài, and it means more or less the same of the Japanese genzai. Latin influenced both russian and english but they're still completely different. Old china is basically latin in this anology. There's only one reading for hanzi and up to 10 readings of kanji, the words they borowed were from a time where things were pronounced different, and then changed over time within japan, etc. etc. You'll know more japanese doing an rtk than a chinese person by simply memorizing some of the reading not even all of them. It's obvious there was an influence in the writing and maybe like 5% of pronouncement survived.

At higher retention rates amount of reviews you have to do grows exponentially. At the same time anything lower than 70 is impractical because you forget too much. The goal here is to do less reps while adding more new cards a day. Also keep in mind that sentence cards often reinforce each other delivering higher retention. At the same time it's important to fix card ease at 250 as well and set lower leech threshold. The approach is called low key anki and involves additional tweaking. Yes, it's all about engaging yourself with the things you do.
If you just mindlessly grind vocabulary you just plateau and feel like you never reach the level where you can start actually using the language even though you're already there if you put your mind into it.
You have to put your brain to work if you want to get good at anything.

Don’t be fooled, picking stuff because it’s easy is a rookie mistake:
When you encounter some unknown Japanese you’ll feel dumb for not understanding the easiest thing you can find, and get disheartened.
Im pretty sure you’re looking to satisfy the urge to be able to read something, so when you do get past the unknown vocabulary/grammar etc you won’t feel good because I’m needing to get past it you already failed your main purpose for reading it

If you pick something that looks compelling there’s no weird additional shame for not understanding it, plus because you are interested in the VN, the act of learning any unknown Japanese is driven by and satisfies the curiosity that compelled to pick the VN in the first place.

remember that anything written by an adult out of passion and not extensively edited is going to basically be completely normal japanese, so the "easy" stuff is basically going to be almost identical to the "normal" stuff, unless you find something written by a technical writer to target a trend with very deliberate language usage, or something written by a teenager

Without vocab how will I know what anything means though? Do I just read blindly and look things up or what?

I agree. Nuance comes from seeing things in a lot of different contexts.

Yeah, look things up with yomichan as you're reading (it's not perfect, but it's pretty good), then immediately reread to test your memory. This is what Tae Kim did. If you read enough the material itself retests you often enough that you don't need flashcards.

Well the context it’s being said is important too.
That line might be a platitude said by somebody ignorant to somebody seriously depressed. Or, the unhappy character might have childishly said “who could smile at a time like this?!” And is being rebuked by somebody who’s been through far worse and still manages to smile

I also don’t use anki for Japanese either but when I look things up I like to use jisho, and if I feel like it, take some time to look at relevant kanji and compounds, get the gist of the overall meaning (or two), example sentences etc

Are you sure you're not just shit at understanding song lyrics? It's a bit different than just reading something or hearing people speak.

I haven't played through it yet, but Inazuma Eleven has voice acting and furigana so it should be pretty easy if you aren't a complete beginner yet. Yokai Watch should be the same as well.
