I stopped studying mandarin when I was only a beginner so I knew only some hundreds of words, but for instance when I learned the Japanese 現在 I remembered of the Mandarin 现在, where 现 is the simplified version of the kanji 現 and by chance that word is read xiàn zài, and it means more or less the same of the Japanese genzai. I'm sure there's a ton more. Thinking that doing RTK brings you to the same level as a Chinese speaker is just ridiculous

Latin influenced both russian and english but they're still completely different. Old china is basically latin in this anology. There's only one reading for hanzi and up to 10 readings of kanji, the words they borowed were from a time where things were pronounced different, and then changed over time within japan, etc. etc. You'll know more japanese doing an rtk than a chinese person by simply memorizing some of the reading not even all of them. It's obvious there was an influence in the writing and maybe like 5% of pronouncement survived.

At higher retention rates amount of reviews you have to do grows exponentially. At the same time anything lower than 70 is impractical because you forget too much. The goal here is to do less reps while adding more new cards a day. Also keep in mind that sentence cards often reinforce each other delivering higher retention. At the same time it's important to fix card ease at 250 as well and set lower leech threshold. The approach is called low key anki and involves additional tweaking. One should watch their true retention and if this happens lower the modifier. I've been doing 240-260% for about two month now and my true retention stays at about 70-75% which I consider a good trade-off.

Today is thanksgiving, and I spent it with my family. I had a good time. I love my family. However, due to it being thanksgiving, I did not think I would get any immersion time... Boy was I wrong! There are two slow improvement periods, the initial wall to get over until you can start using the language, and the true fluency wall that you can only climb over by using the language a ton.

I went through the practice book and got a good idea of the timing and question structure and there wasn't much I didn't know already so I'm not too worried about it. we always watched anime during the last class of the semester
progress wasnt that slow, first week hiragana, second week katakana
afterwards every week 10 vocabulary with kanji and roughly 2 to 3 grammar points per week, we were using the marugoto textbooks tho
i do agree on taking the fun part out of japanese, but the goal of those classes was to make the people conversational about stuff like shopping, sightseeing, general self introduction and shit

Yeah, look things up with yomichan as you're reading (it's not perfect, but it's pretty good), then immediately reread to test your memory. This is what Tae Kim did. If you read enough the material itself retests you often enough that you don't need flashcards.
