Why does it translate to "can't read" instead of "don't read"? 読めない is a simple negative of 読む, isn't it? So shouldn't it say "don't read"?
Is there no conjugation in japanese for "can" and "can't" and it has to be told from context or something?

You just can't say かわいいでした or かわいくないでした, the correct way to do past tense is かわいかったです or かわいくなかったです

This is because ない also works as an i-adjective, when you use ありません it's a different story

I literally don't understand how sentence mining is supossed to work, especially in the beginning.

I just tried looking for some anime audio drama but it's really hard for me to find something, because this genre is almost non existing on english sites and my japanese writing and reading is way too poor to google it. You're not going to understand shit for a while for more reasons than not knowing enough words. It comes down to powering through and looking up what you don't know in the dictionary and google.
The first 2000 words are so common that doing anki on them is ridiculous, just take in the language and you'll be familiar with that many words fairly quick. Looking up kanji as a beginner can be a pain in the ass but it's a necessary evil. It's either spend months in anki trying to get used to chinese runes before you step out into the wild, or step out into the wild now and be better off for it later.

I complete understand your point, but it's pretty hard to search something if the only kanjis you know is person and tree and you are not the least interested to learn any more for a long long time. You really need about 5500 words to start fealing like you're understanding anything. I'm starting to get moments where where I understand pretty well but most stuff I miss and I'm at about 4500 words. The last % of words is the most important.

Well it comes down to priorities. I can't learn japanese through text, because I'm not interested in text based content. All I'm interested in is anime and maybe some obscure movies. I might learn kanji at a later point in time. But then it will be kanji on the front, japanese audio on the back.

I can accept that it's not the most efficient way over all. But I can kinda live with those mono things. I constantly optimize my deck and put them together on the same card, otherwise it gets pretty confusing with anki. I simply try to learn all the common meaning for a word, but in the order they come up in the deck. It's a bit annoying, but it's nothing unusual with learning a language.

I really appreciate your concerns and it's not out of the question that I will change my ways somewhere along the way. At the moment I do think that I make satisfying progress and until that changes I feel confident everything will work out as planned. For now my goal is to understand about 2000 of the most common works by listening only. This should be easily achievable in 3-6 months total. After that I will reconsider if I need to change something.

The problem is it's an easy compound despite the length, and really fails because they used 研究センター instead of 研究所, which makes the whole thing seem less compoundy.

Town and city names are much more intimidating, esp the longer ones with rare kanji with "just know it" one-off readings.
