This is a Japanese language learning thread for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.

If you have no interest in the above or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

"I can't read such small letters."

Why does it translate to "can't read" instead of "don't read"? 読めない is a simple negative of 読む, isn't it? So shouldn't it say "don't read"?
Is there no conjugation in japanese for "can" and "can't" and it has to be told from context or something?

I literally don't understand how sentence mining is supossed to work, especially in the beginning.

>There aren't any +1 sentences because I don't know any words yet
>How am I supossed to write down the whole sentence when I don't even know where one word starts and one word ends (if I don't have japanese subs)
>what comes on the front of the card, what on the back?
>what part is in english, what part is in japanese?
>am i supossed to know the whole sentence or just one word? Just the meaning or exactly how to say it?

I just tried looking for some anime audio drama but it's really hard for me to find something, because this genre is almost non existing on english sites and my japanese writing and reading is way too poor to google it. Could somebody pretty pleae point me to some kind of anime audio drama database. Then I could mine the words on the site to learn to navigate it and probably finally search for those resources on nyaa.

how much vocab do people generally recommend? I'm at about 400 now and feel like I don't understand shit. I heard people talk about 600, but I really feel like under 2000 is basically useless.

>> No.20275549

>>20275505
You're not going to understand shit for a while for more reasons than not knowing enough words. It comes down to powering through and looking up what you don't know in the dictionary and google.
The first 2000 words are so common that doing anki on them is ridiculous, just take in the language and you'll be familiar with that many words fairly quick. Looking up kanji as a beginner can be a pain in the ass but it's a necessary evil. It's either spend months in anki trying to get used to chinese runes before you step out into the wild, or step out into the wild now and be better off for it later.

You really need about 5500 words to start fealing like you're understanding anything. I'm starting to get moments where where I understand pretty well but most stuff I miss and I'm at about 4500 words. The last % of words is the most important.

I can accept that it's not the most efficient way over all. But I can kinda live with those mono things. I constantly optimize my deck and put them together on the same card, otherwise it gets pretty confusing with anki.
