Ever wonder why many fan art depictions of Reisen's hair is blue, considering that her hair according to the respectable en_touhouwiki and an Inaba color page (pictured) is purple? Click this post to find out more.

The wiki fandom page falsely claims that Reisen is the blue haired rabbit that appeared in this color page of Bougetsushou (available on the tankobon version), using her letter in Runagate to corroborate this story. This claim is used to explain the numerous blue haired Reisen fanart.

This theory makes no sense when you consider that the pictured rabbit doesn't have Reisen's unique floppy ears which makes her stand out from the lunar defense force rabbits and that Reisen herself was already on Earth while this was happening (recall that Yukari's plan depended on the two sisters being distracted at the same time). This rabbit is NOT Reisen.

And yet, plenty of fanart colors her hair blue. Did the japs get it wrong too? Not at all!

Upon researching it further, several Japanese sources point to a certain "store bonus" which had the very first color depiction of Reisen as the basis of her ocean colored hair. Just as a background, whenever some new book gets released in Japan, different stores offer different exclusive extra items related to the work in order to attract customers.

Pictured is a fanart on pixiv trying to get people to draw Reisen with blue hair, citing the extra item from animate's edition of Bougetsushou Volume 3.

What does that bookmark look like? How are we sure it's official? Well, this took a while to find but...

I could only find a portion of the bookmark. This picture was retrieved from Reisen's MUGEN wiki page, claiming that this was the bookmark referred to by all those posts.

As you can clearly see, that is Aki Eda's distinctive art style, and it's got the brave little rabbit we all know and love with blue colored hair.

I posted this find on /jp/ to see if other anons could find a better pic of the bookmark itself.

Even after the color page in the Inaba manga changing her hair to purple, the influence of that little bookmark can still be felt to this day. Most Reisen fanart depicts her hair light blue, possibly another reason is to further distance her from the Udonge's purple hair color. From MMD models to illustrations, it seems that blue haired Reisen is here to stay.

Reisen has special issue helmet designed for her weird ears, and like I said she can't be in two places at the same time unless there's some weird lunar rabbit power she has that we don't know about. Not unlikely considering that Udonge gets new abilities every installment she appears in and Seiran-Ringo having different abilities in spite of both being moon rabbits... but it's a stretch.

Remi has same problem. Her hair was originally more silverish/white in the ZUN art, but other artists, both fan artists and the fighting game ones, always draw it blue or purple.

Given how ZUN is a big JoJo fan, he might also be doing this whole "there is no canon color palette" thing. The ending clearly shows her hair is blue, and IN is clearly more white than blue. These aren't the only situations of color inconsistency in touhou. What are Alice's eyes colored? Is Reimu's hair brown or jet black? ZUN can't decide, maybe he's intentionally not deciding.

That would be silly, because Kogasa's hair is blue in all her portraits, unlike the snow white Remi's hair in all of her portraits.

For me, the official portraits are more canon than things like sprites.

That doesn't mean that Remiria-sama's a strange faceless bluish-white haired monster with no features, it's just the ending art is more stylised. And like in most games, I consider official character portraits to be a more accurate depiction of features than overworld sprites.
