The guide is a mix of good and bad information. It tries too hard to be impartial and ends up listing a lot of time-wasting, ineffective things because of it.

Here's the TL;DR of what you need to do:
1. Install Yomichan or Nazeka or RikaiRebuilt.

2. Read a beginner guide like Tae Kim or Sakubi. Don't expect to understand it all and do NOT try to memorize it. Consider watching raw anime as you do this while listening out for the grammar pattern you've learned about.

3. Either part way through reading, or after you've finished reading your chosen grammar guide, begin reading and listening to Japanese media aimed at native speakers (go with whatever it that you're interested in: anime, visual novels, whatever it is that YOU want to read/listen to). Expect to not understand a lot at the beginning, but know that the more you read and listen the better you will get. The more time you can devote to reading and listening every day, the faster you will improve.

4. Use Anki to aid in memorizing vocabulary. Use the Anki integration of Yomichan/Nazeka/RikaiRebuilt to automatically generate flashcards for words you want to learn, then review them. More info: https://pastebin.com/5ydgiy5A

For images, you'll have to use OCR. See the guide for info. For VNs, you'll want to use a text-hoooker like ITHVNR (again, see the guide).

Translating a monolingual dictionary isn't a good way to make a bilingual dictionary, you're just going to end up with something uglier than jmdict. parsing the stilted constructions in jisho is still faster for the vast majority of learners than using a monolingual dictionary. in the image linked 1, 2, 3 are basically all "reach", 4 is an specific construction (with explanatory reference) and 5 is a genuinely separate definition.

>>20248724
it's about 10x faster for an english speaker to look up sortie in an EE dictionary than 出撃 in a JJ dictionary because if you're still at the incompetent level at which you must look up words like 出撃 then 敵を攻撃するために陣地・基地を出ること is going to take you more time to read than "an attack made by troops coming out from a position of defense"

you're not going to learn anything from a dictionary, the only reason to use one is when you're stuck and can't make out what something means, and if you can't tell which sense is being used then you're better off consulting Q&A sites or just moving on and doing something else, not trying to find a better dictionary

it's true that jdic/edict/edict2/jmdict has a lot of misleading definitions but they are becoming less and less of a problem as time goes on because you can edit jmdict as will (your edits just have to be approved by one of the maintainers. some of them don't actually know japanese, but it filters out trolls, unlike wiktionary.)

Can you give an example? J-J entries tend to be way longer and include more senses, and use concepts that don't translate well to English. I don't really see how you conceptualize the translation of a J-J dictionary looking.
For example try this:

命令
1) 上位の者が下位の者に対してあることをするように言いつけること。また、その内容。「─を下す」

What are you going to do with this source material? English already has a different word with a similar definition. Are you going to just extend the jisho definition "order; command" to a longer sentence with one or both of those words in it? What would be the point?

JMdict and bilingual dictionaries in general are supposed to work like a thesaurus. If you need the finer details, you read a monolingual dictionary. If you're not good enough to read a monolingual dictionary, then you don't need the finer details. I agree that there are some words where a larger explanation would help and jisho doesn't deliver, but replacing every entry with a translation of Daijirin is not the answer to this problem. The entries should just be reconsidered with the information in a monolingual dictionary in mind, at most.

actually verbs seem to go literally anywhere and don't necessarily cut anything off. sometimes they use て to denote continuation but a lot of the time it just seems to be that a verb will be unconjugated and stuffed right in the middle of a sentence and then more shit immediately after it.

One of the few truly great uses of Anki is to do exactly what you just said.

Basically just make sure you use it, listen a lot, and when you read, be sure to do so out loud in the correct tones to further reinforce it.

It's really a far more elegant system than people give it credit for.

>>20250275
Not at all, Chinese tones are unlike Pitch Accent.

However, you will become very attuned to the pitches and will likely settle into saying each one a very specific way 99% of the time, which is why it's important to get them right from the start. Tone 3 is the one that seems to give people the most trouble.

Chinese is the superior language overall, shame about it having less quality native content, but you could probably reach the highest HSK level in half the time it takes to reach N1 with Japanese. It's really all the best parts of Japanese and English with very few of the garbage parts. No verb tenses, very free-flowing sentence structure, topic-prominent, no honorifics.

Sure you have to deal with tones and the counters are actually worse than Japanese, but if you studied Japanese for more than 6 months you already "accepted" those counters and find them easy by now, so it's not that bad.

And top tip - the tones are secondary to context anyway

Sorry, left the thread shortly after posting (I wasn't actually expecting to get a serious response). Hopefully you're still around.

How exactly do I utilize Anki to learn the tones? I checked AnkiWeb looking for a good pre-made deck there which would help with this but I wasn't able to find one. The resources available for Chinese really do pale in comparison to what exists for Japanese. In particular, there doesn't seem to be anything like the JDIC audio collection for Chinese which is really unfortunate.

>>20250254
It's admittedly somewhat of a whim. I really like the way Chinese sounds and have been curious to try learning it for a while now. Given the lack of media though, as you say, coupled with the fact that I'm still learning Japanese and will continue to focus most of my time on that, I don't know if I will manage to stick it out or get very far.

The only decent Gothic (Sans-Serif) fonts are:
IPAexGothic (made by the Information-technology Promotion Agency, an organization of the Japanese government)
Meiryo (default Windows font for Japanese)
VL Gothic (made by the developers of Vine Linux, a Japanese Linux distribution)

Noto Sans CJK JP (made by Google + Adobe) is also decent but has a ridiculous line height. Pretty much all the other free Gothic fonts out there just use IPAexGothic's Kanji glyphs with their own Kana.

Pre-made decks are garbage period dot. Make your own with things you learn on your own.

When I first started dabbling in Mandarin some years ago (back when I lived and worked with 80% Mandarin speakers) I'd make flashcards with the words I'd learned on the job that day and just brute force them. It's not particularly elegant, but having a lot of people to correct me was excellent reinforcement.

Put the Hanzi on the front of the card, and the definition/pinyin on the back. Anki makes this awesome because you can slap pictures on the back which is great for nouns/adjectives. That's all you need. You can color-code the back for tones if it helps, but give yourself no hints on the front or you will use it as a crutch. As well, I would put traditional characters on front and simplified versions on the back, if they apply. You'll have an easier time dealing with the simplified junk if you know the traditional first, with a few exceptions.

I didn't have this particular benefit (having native speakers mitigated the need), but if you can find the word spoken in isolation, get a sound clip and include it on the back of the card. Honestly, the faster you can get to a sentence mining phase the better off you will be, because hearing it over and over is really what it takes to drill it into your soul.

This is a good post. If you know 90% of words already then watch stuff and listen, because you can start to glean from context at this point, and verify with a dictionary.

However, if you're still unsure of really common words, you'd best spend your time studying so that your time spent watching is not wasted.

Yea, it's pretty short and to the point too, the 2k vncore isn't bad either but it shows you the kanji at the same time as the hiragana, the djt 1250 card deck doesn't do that. If you're using the 1250 deck (which is better) then put the command in to make the english a Hint, that way you can basically flip the card twice. Kanji, then hiragana, and finally english. Also try to visualize the hiragana before you reveal. Those are little tricks I used.
