How does one motivate themselves to learn Japanese on their own? I took classes but after finishing the first year Japanese classes, I ended up getting a 30 on the final in my second course (still got a C overall) because I budgeted my time poorly

still not as bad as my friends who went into the final with a 45 in the course though

I'm afraid there's not much hope for you if you can't even pass a basic Japanese class with a 100. If I ever discover a convenient way to instantly motivate someone to self-study regardless of any willpower problems they might have I'll tell you.

Step 1 is enjoying Japanese media, step 2 is being keen enough to pick up on how much is going over your head in the stuff you enjoy because you don't know Japanese.

Once you figure that out, you can't live without knowing Japanese and step 3 is you learn it.

Honestly you should give up now

Not trying to be that anon but Japanese is a really fucking hard language to learn, probably the hardest one that's not some mountain nignogs language that's only hard because there's no resources on it.

It'll take you years of **dedicated** study to reach anything remotely fluent.

If you're not motivated enough to get past the easy basic shit, what makes you think you'll be motivated to do it for years and years with no pay off?

Why is itazuraneko so afraid of textbooks?
>Now what do I do to actually learn Japanese?
>learn kana
>learn Core 2k(6k) with Anki
>learn Kanji (with a retarded way or with Heisig)
>learn 20 new Anki cards a day
>learn Tae Kim's grammar
>read and use Yotsuba reading pack
>muh mining
>毎日読め馬鹿外人

I would totally agree that Anki is 100 % necessary to really learn new Vocabulary. Also Anki is the best way for Heisig and maybe even learning grammar with a dictionary of Japanese grammar Anki deck. But it is missing a path. Tae Kim is more of an "advanced" book (not the content is advanced, but it can confuse if you don't know textbooks), because it is extremely helpful, but criticizes too much normal textbooks for a beginner. Sure, after you have finished Genki I&II or any other elementary textbooks, Tae Kim gives you a better view into Japanese, but only if you know the textbook way.

The biggest problem I had with Japanese was after I used Genki I&II. I stopped using textbooks and went full itazuraneko. I lost completely track and had to go all the way back to intermediate and advanced textbooks to have a track. As soon as I combined itazuraneko and textbooks I made huge progress. From time to time I look into the textbooks again for the comfy memories and to remember my learning path.

Especially if you are a self learner without teacher, you have no guide without textbooks. If you learn bad habits, you will pay for it later.

For me itazuraneko in combination with textbooks is the best way to learn. It's just the fastest way. Sure, you can create your own 1000 folded textbooks with Japanese paper, but instead of wasting maybe even 20 or more years, just use good textbooks and get the same out of them in like 3 or less years.

The hardest part to learn Japanese is sadly the time. If you have a job or you are a student, you have already pretty much no time at all. I would say even if you use itazuraneko and textbooks in the best possible way, finding every day 1 hour or more to study Japanese while doing all this other stuff is the real challenge. After I started learning Japanese I hadn't even time to watch anime at all, because literally no time. Though learning Japanese is the best the best thing I did. Especially Anki can be extremely helpful for other things you have to remember and you have to remember a lot.

>> No.20188391

>>20188225
You don't need a "track" to learn Japanese, you just take in comprehensible content and gradually build the connections you need for the language in your brain.
People endorse TK because it's concise and good enough to start making sense of the language a little bit. There are other resources that I've heard also suffice for this like Japanese the Manga Way, but the point is you're looking to get into understanding practical Japanese as fast as you can. You want to recgnize basic particles and conjunctions and conjugations, and you definitely want to recognize at least a little bit of colloquial Japanese because there's a ton of it you're going to run into. Textbooks are not good for this. They spend way too much of your time going over vocabulary and specific structures and doing exercises when you should really just get the basic idea and move on. Any kind of colloquial Japanese will be left for way later and explained poorly (I took one spring quarter third-year college course, they had to go through a passage on 男言葉, really basic shit too, stopping every single time any sort of mild vernacular came up and explaining its nuance using English. This is not the kind of thing you want to be doing three years into learning the language).

The other things like anki and heisig are just lame optimization methods, no one should be worrying too much about exactly how it's done. You don't 100% need anki to learn the language at all. What you need to do is read and listen a lot and do what you can to comprehend it. If anki and heisig help with this, great, but how much they help any given person is subjective, and either way real language progress is only made result of exposing yourself to Japanese.

And I call bullshit on the time argument. Someone who works a bit over full time still easily has at least 50 hours of free time throughout the week to devote to doing what they like, they just have to cut down on non-Japanese things like shitposting on 4chan and playing video games.

Maybe DJT's advice isn't for every human in the world and there's some base level of brainpower you need to clear to be able to use TK and google as helpful resources, I don't know, but in that case we're better off just ditching the dullards to rot in college courses and keeping this as a community for somewhat resourceful and self motivated people.

btw when there's a verb followed by a direct object you shouldn't split them with an adverb, it makes you stink of european. "lost completely track" and "criticizes too much normal textbooks" should look like "lost track completely" and "criticizes normal textbooks too much."
"completely lost track" also works.

It's like anything else, you either want it or you don't, and language also requires some degree of immersion.

You might have a natural +1 or -1 in language skill that makes you pick it up faster or slower than average, but at the end of the day it just requires time and practice.

People talk about how you have to keep up with it or you'll forget things and how this is some huge downside to learning a language, because it requires practice to keep the skill from atrophying... oh, like literally any other skill on the planet? This wouldn't be such a novel and scary concept to people like this if they'd ever tried to hone any other skill in their lives.

A friend of mine managed to get quite fluent in Japanese in about three months. He had a daily commute of about 2.5 hours and simply picked up a book and started learning it word by word and made an anki deck out of it. Not sure how he managed to make the transformation from reading to understanding and speaking. But I guess he simply started watching anime without subs. His priority has always been books, so I don't know really. After his first visit in Japan, he was quite surprised himself, that he was able to hold conversations with out any problems. I guess he was a bit insecure about his pronunciation, but it turned out good enough.
Not sure if it really helps anyone, but just so you know, you can pick up Japanese (or any language) quite fast if you are determined enough.

>> No.20190350

>monolingual is retarded
Why would you think that? This is absolute language learning basics. You need to stop all connections to your native language as soon as possible. I'm not a native english speaker and there are many english words I understand perfectly fine, but have a hard time translation back to my native language. This is because I learned them in the context of english and not my native language. You can't get fluent, if you need to translate every word in your head all the time and try to figure out some stupid grammar rules. Fluency mean that you can think in that language and communicate with it intuitively.

I think the problem with many people in these threads is, that you are from english speaking countries. Most of you have never even attempted to learn a second language and certainly never reached a point of fluency. I'm not very familiar with AJATT, but from what I know it's certainly way better than anything the traditional western school system has come up with. You are simply not going to learn a language at school. I certainly helps a bit and can make things faster, but what you really need of is lots of immersion. There simply is no other way.

Useful languages, but if you don't find them interesting, you're shit out of luck. The default ease of an Anki card is 2.5 which means if your cards interval is 10 days and you hit "Good" on it then you'll see it again in 2.5*10=25 days. So 25 is the new interval but you can change that equation a bit. If you set Interval Modifier to 150% then it becomes 1.5*2.5*10=37 days. Why do you want a bigger interval? Well because that means your reps get more spread out and you have less work to do daily. But also seeing a card less frequently means your retention will drop and you will fail more cards and that will create extra work for you. You want to find the best balanced between that positive factor and that negative factor. And it's 150%

You don't have to go *full* monolingual to pick up a language. It's an automatic process your brain does when getting input in the language. Just reading in Japanese is enough, J-J dictionaries might have better explanations but other than that there's no language learning advantage to setting your dictionary and OS language and phone and watch to Japanese. None of that is comprehensible input.

Looking up something like 爬虫類 in a J-J dictionary is most likely just going to steal your attention away from some better long-form context to read some technical shit when you could just glace at "reptile" in jmdict and move on.

But as soon as you reach a certain point where you understand basic explanations of stuff, it really helps to use a Japanese dict. If you encounter new words in the explanation you simply look them up as well. This isn't necessary of course, but it's a neat trick to have more exposure to the language.

>> No.20190519

The way people keep trying to over simplify this stuff is cute. You should definetly go monolingual if your goal is to become fluent. That should be obvious. I think most of djt just wants to be able to play vn's though so they're going to need a different guide.

A scheduler v1 overhaul for Anki 2.1.

Inspired by people sharing guides on fixing Anki's default settings or advice on how to keep Anki from being extremely inefficient.

Makes the following changes:

- The review limit is forced to 9999
- The "Again" button no longer changes the ease of cards
- Card ease is reset to the default after whenever that card is answered
- Forces a minimum lapse interval factor of 20%
- Answer button overhaul
-- Normal reviews only have two answers: "again" and "good"
-- For learning/relearning queue cards, if they're on the zeroth step, the "again" button is equivalent to the "good" button. This reduces the impact of a design flaw in the "learn ahead" feature that can cause you to see leeches too much.

Individual changes can be turned off via configuration if you dislike them or they're broken. This is why changes 2 and 3 are separate.

This was not tested with filtered decks. This was also only tested at a very basic level and it was written very quickly, please report any issues so I can address them.

Apparently I know more about this than you.

v1_answerRevCard, v1_answerButtons: cannot be done correctly with wrapping.
v1_deckRevLimitSingle, v1_rescheduleLapse, v1_nextRevIvl, v1_lapseConf: can only be done with manual wrapping, not Anki's wrapping sugar. This wrapping would also be elaborate and involve directly modifying the results of the original functions.
v1_groupChildrenMain: cannot be done at all with wrapping, unless you want to write something more elaborate than the original.

Anki 2.1's v1 scheduler is considered deprecated, so it's very unlikely for it to change in the future. Monkeypatching isn't going to be a problem. If it is someone can just upload an updated version of the addon.

And the "MIT hacker" thing is a myth, people still use the word hacker correctly to the present day.

Also the answer to anon's riddle about references is not "the heap". Python doesn't have a "the heap". It's a fully garbage collected language. No, the heappush() call doesn't contain enough information to recover the card's full modified state.

I have no idea what is wrong with you guys. I'm still at the very beginning of my journey, but I know three people personally who learned Japanese in a very reasonable time frame. Of course you can always improve and will never stop learning (not even with your native language). But if you are unable to hold a casual conversation after studying for half a year, you are doing everything wrong. It's really not that hard. If nothing else helps, go to a monolingual language school in Japan for about 3 months. This wont be cheap, but you will improve immensely. 1. If you have a lot of time to spend on Anki, you should be spending it on reading and listening. That's where the learning of Japanese actually happens.

2. You only have so much mental resources available each day. There's a risk of blowing all your mental energy on Anki and having none/very little left to spend on exposure, or doing so many cards that your mental energy is sapped before you've even finished your reviews.

3. You might be able to spend 2 hours on one day doing Anki reps, but Anki is something you're going to be using for months or more likely years, and you're going to have to do it every single day if you want it to be effective. Are you preprepared to spend 2 hours every day for the next several years reviewing flashcards? Does that really sound like a sustainable practice to you?

Language learning is a long-term endeavour; What matters is not so much what you get done in a single day or even a few weeks, but what you get done over the course of months or many years. If you aren't doing something which you can sustain on that sort of timeline, then you're not going to succeed. It's that simple.

Theres a balance you want to get though where your brain see's anki as a resource for your content, not as something seperate.

For every day you miss, your reviews skyrocket and increase in difficulty due to the fact that you missed all the ideal intervals for them and are going to have forgotten numerous cards which you otherwise wouldn't have if you'd reviewed when you were supposed to.

Skipping days not only reduces Anki's effectiveness but also makes the experience of using it significantly worse. Missing more than 1 or maybe 2 days max is likely to see you drop Anki altogether.

We have a Japanese poster here who has been around for years roleplaying as everyone's little sister, hence the name "imouto". He used to always post with an image from the anime Ichigo Mashimaro, but he stopped doing that after the mods banned him under the "no avatars" rule for it. He's still easily recognisable though due to the fact that he posts in all hiragana, says 「おにいちゃん」 a lot, and starts a new line for every sentence or clause.

Here are (some of) his posts from back when DJT was still on /a/ and he was still using his Ichigo Mashimaro images:

Anki tech support still makes up for more posts than "anki is a waste of time" to date, I think you're just being selective. Besides Matt isn't even anti-Anki, in fact he pushes some absolutely retarded sentence mining method.
