Do you mean Japanese culture? Or Otaku culture?
For the former, I appreciate Japan's general aversion to austerity economics. The Japanese government is willing to pave the roads and deliver the mail to the tiniest of villages, even if they're """"""unprofitable"""""""

For the latter, it's a tie between vinyl microbikinis, and 500 year-old lolihags that will dominate my dick in the bedroom.

Not really. Modern web development has to take into account that a majority of their users navigating their website or app with their fingers.

>Western popular aesthetics, design and illustration are going to shit. If you hate yourself, take the time to browse https://twitter.com/HumansOfFlat/media.. This is the cutting edge. It's where we're heading in the West.
Going beyond the obvious political agenda that account is pushing, I scrolled through his tweets and he never really addresses how modern western art design is popular because it's cheap. You can do the whole thing in photoshop and the style can be easily obtained through outsourcing. You can hire freelancers working for $8 an hour and still get art of passable quality.

If you're a design critic and spend all day looking at graphics, you're obviously going to see the ugliness of the design. But most of this art is meant for splash pages or ads. It's meant to be ephemeral and at a glance the soft lines and pastel colours are pleasing enough to someone who will maybe look at it for a few seconds at most.

If you're a tech executive and you're mandated to find cost savings wherever you can, why wouldn't you go with this art, given that it's "good enough" and inexpensive compared to hiring an in-house illustrator?

>> No.20173867

True, but the trendsetters aren't outsourcers. They are highly paid in-house designers at the likes of Dropbox and Google. Dropbox in particular seems proud of their ugly redesign. They have a whole separate website about it.
https://dropbox.design/
Maybe it's their long-term cost reduction plan.
>It's meant to be ephemeral
This is a good point, though I think people still notice. They become aware on some level of the art's poor quality even if they can't articulate it clearly. I have seen it first-hand with Dropbox. It doesn't help that some of this art is shown quite often even if it is briefly.

>> No.20175336

>>20173867
I'm guessing that the style itself is easy and cheap enough to produce that other tech companies see Google doing it and figure "if they're doing we should to" to shave off a few thousand on their ad budgets.

A lot of the reason is structural: much of the Japanese finance sector is still controlled by pre-war zaibatsu families. Patronage and family ties keep the elite from turning on each other. Even if the old families don't have full control anymore, there's still enough influence that you can often call up someone's cousin to get a loan on favourable terms.
