How to learn Japanese TL;DR - Learn kana with DJT Kana (+writing if you want), read Tae Kim's grammar guide, then start reading and listening to compelling content intended for adult native speakers for several hours each day.

reading makes it a lot easier for to remember certain words in vncore so although i'm only like 200 words in i might abandon it and start mining.

The hardest thing for me when reading aloud is the fact that I simply don't read fast enough to read fluidly. Same thing when text shows up in anime where I have to pause to be able to read it all. What can I do? Is it really just about reading more?

It's tough in the beginning because you have all these new kanji. I started with Core6k and went at 20 cards a day throughout, and I remember when my rep stack first started growing big before my knowledge had caught up. Lots of doubt back then. I'm at 33k cards now with what's basically customized Core10k deck + 23k mined cards. Now I just go at 10 new cards a day while prioritizing and repositioning vocab that keeps popping up. Things do get easier.

Here's a sketch of a kanji deck I'm planning (let's pretend that 生 is a 食).

In "Production", the goal is to write the kanji from memory, no secret.
In "Recalling", the goal is to recall the kanji and its readings.

Both "Recalling 1" and "Recalling 2" have problems, though:

R1 - Simply saying "there are X readings, list them all" is not a very good method. If I can recall 19/20 readings of 生, failing a card would be frustrating, and scavenging my brain for all readings will probably slowly kill me, besides probably not reflecting a complete list of readings.

R2 - I feel like other kanji and okurigana give away the answer too easily, making my brain not focus on the kanji being reviewed. For instance, most people here would struggle to tell what kanji 薇 is, but upon seeing the word 薔薇, the reading becomes pretty obvious.

I have almost 4000 kanji and 15k+ cards in my vocab deck, so I'm not a beginner. My goal is to learn to write by hand and also fill the gaps in kanji readings/meanings I'm unfamiliar with.

Any opinions are welcome.

I got most of those too. Just do genki but breeze through it, dont burn out on it. You really do want to try to immerse as much as possible and those books are external to japanese. All you really need is Anki and the internet. Stream and torrent all day while doing vocab and whatnot as a suplement. Get tae kim online for free (and theres a anki deck for it) and do grammar (that's where I'm suffering the most). N4 in a year is possible if you have no life except study like me. A: no evidence either way
Q: so why do people do it?
A: people want to believe that they've found a holy grail that unlocks the key to victory

at the end of the day, whether someone gets fit or not is primarily a function of whether they bothered to put in the fucking work of going to gym day after day, and not what program they subscribed to along the way. if having a program helps you with your motivation, great! but the work is still what matters.

as long as you are practicing in ANY meaningful way (ie, doing anything in which there is meaningful feedback, corrections, and improvement) you will eventually improve at the aspect of the language you are practicing. if you put in the work, you will go the distance, unless your practice is SO IMMENSELY FLAWED that it actively reinforces incorrect behavior and you learn literally nothing from it. very few people are actually in this hole.

I read an interview with James Heisig where he mentioned learning to speak Japanese by playing with children, somewhere up in the mountains. How could you even make this stuff up? So when I heard the man was in Tokyo, I knew I had to ask him about it.

Because here’s the extent of what I learned from children by teaching grade school in Japan for several years: The word for lunch. How to say “I’m so cold.” How to say “I’m so hot.” How to grab your teacher’s penis and exclaim “bigu sticku.” How to insert your fingers up his butt in a move known as the kancho. Beyond that, children typically ramble about some toy or cartoon or playground game. They’re not going to coach you on how to make hotel reservations or order up another plate of gyoza. The idea that one could learn to speak from them is insane. They can’t even use the language decently themselves. That’s because they’re freaking kids.

I met Heisig at a writer’s workshop. He seemed a pleasant enough fellow, and a fine teller of grandiose stories. After listening to his well-polished tale about singlehandedly inventing a way of learning Japanese characters that millions of Japanese folks had never thought of in their thousands of years of history, I finally got a chance to ask him, “How did you learn to speak it?”

“I played baseball with the kids,” was his reply. “Up in the mountains. In Nagano.

“You played baseball?” I asked. “With children?

“Yep.

“And that’s how you learned to speak Japanese?

“Sure. Children are the best teachers.”

Now, that sounds reasonable. Everybody nodded. But it isn’t reasonable. It sounds good, but it’s actually nuts. Children are the worst teachers. They make no damn sense.

You know, over the years, I’ve asked many people how they learned Japanese, and their answers consistently fall into one of two categories. They either describe a systematic method pursued diligently over the course of several years, or they make up some convenient bullshit because they don’t really want to respond to the question. I looked at Heisig, and had my answer.

However i'm still reading all the while and would come across stuff i remember more over time.

I wanted to learn the radicals first so i can use their combinations into kanji to help me remember them.
For example: mouth+Lid+Fire = This kanji etc

However it's becoming tedious and i wonder if i should go straight into learning all kanji and increase my vocab.

Did you install Rikaichan from scratch when you upgraded? The "Rikaichan" currently up on the Mozilla site isn't actually the original Rikaichan but a fork made by a different dev for the new Firefox add-on API. Considering it hasn't been updated for an entire year, I'd say you're better off using Rikaichamp or RikaiRebuilt instead. Is repetition important? I've heard Steve and others talk about listening to a particular piece of content many times over, but I've never done it myself.

What sort of content is actually good for this purpose? I can't imagine doing it with an audiovisual medium like anime since a lot of the audio is going to be tied to visual context from the show (「そーそれは!?」、「何故あいつがあんな物を…?」, etc.) which without you can't follow what's going on. Not to mention all the big gaps in the audio where stuff is going on visually and nobody is speaking.

>I had a lesson on it at school and nobody knew what the teacher was talking about

That may be the case for your language, but it's not the case for English. Any native speaker will be able to note the stress difference between, say, incite and insight. Whenever I listen to an ESL and they fuck up the stress on a word, I immediately notice it and it stands out considerably.

I'm not saying you have to speak English with a perfect stress accent. As a native speaker, I'm used to hearing some really bad accents (some so bad as to be completely incomprehensible), so as far as I'm concerned so long as you're intelligible I'm not going to get upset. But the fact of the matter is, stress is a part of correct English pronunciation and if you are getting it wrong then you aren't pronouncing words correctly and any native speaker will immediately be able to out you as a non-native speaker based on that alone.

Your brain is literally built for pattern recognition. If you hear the same sounds in the same contexts multiple times you will intuitively pick up on it and begin to draw conclusions as to its meaning. Oh!

Often people make a slideshow (using PowerPoint or something) for their presentation, and then when they present it in front of an audience, they just read what is on the screen. Or, someone might right out their presentation like an essay, and just read off of the paper. An outline would be something like a brief list of bullet points that the speaker could use to remind them what to say instead. For example, an outline might look like this:

- project deadline postponed
- funding opportunities have been contacted
- initial research has begun

And then the speaker might talk about those three points. They might have this list of points (outline) on a note card or two.

Thanks! I figured it out after thinking about it for I while just before your post.

I used to do that when talking with a jap friend over skype, writing down some phrases about topics I wanted to talk about and then repeating them while talking to him, I guess that was bad? I used to do it mostly to don't stop in the middle of a sentence in case I didn't know a word or a conjugation and bore him.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming that his settings are actually optimal, which is highly doubtful considering his track record, they will provide much more negligible gains in terms of saving time for someone who spends 3 seconds per card instead of 20 seconds.

By having only 3 fewer cards to review, someone who spends 20 seconds per card can reduce their rep time by 1 minute. For someone who spends 3 seconds per card however, their reviews would have to be reduced by 20 to make that same (ultimately insignificant) saving. 100 fewer reviews for a 20spc individual = 33 minute saving, for a 3spc individual = 5 minute saving.

Only reason Matt and his followers care about Anki optimisation so much is because their sentence mining method itself is extremely time inefficient, but they can't admit that and want to put the blame on Anki not being "optimal" instead.

>> No.20080934

already came up with mnemonics for it.
>sub component that looks like bound up dick and balls = chastity belt with semen dropping out (to help remember the rightward curve).
>sub component with the little stars that look like rudders = turbine engine (for some weird plane or rocket ship or something). the x is the window.
picture a balding ajatter with piss jugs in a chastity belt tethered to the outside of a rocketship in space.

now i'm not going to recall it because these are pointless kanji, but god DAMN has rtk equipped me to easily use mnemonics.

if they have broken english that means they're only here out of necessity, and that's not going to be me with japanese. plenty of mexicans speak decent english, and their accents don't bother me, i find them appealing. your dumb biases aren't entertaining anyone, so keep them to yourself dumbo

There is something beautiful about language learning, man. You are showing a genuine interest in someone else’s language and culture. And there are also people interested in your own language and culture. Can someone clarify the use of the second の for me?

「自分のしたことのあるアルバイトについて・・・を書きなさい。」

I know it's asking me to write about some part-time job I've done before.

Why is it 「の」instead of「が」?
I assume because「自分のしたことがあるアルバイト」would translate to "A part-time job that's done itself"?
