What are some primary source materials that I can read about ikigai? Do I really have to learn about it second hand from 2 western authors?

If I understand ikigai right, this is the thing where in jrpgs and anime the main character always turns down the opportunity to do a virtuous act because "he doesn't care" until the point when he finds his own reason to conduct the virtuous act and save the day right?

Why would anyone here know or care about this?

That's called "being aloof" and chuuni nerds think that it is "cool."

This is just a generic self help book with a think cover of Japanese paint to attract normies who think Asia = wisdom and gullible weebs.

The primary source material is the minds of the Japanese people, since ikigai is not some sort of deep dark wisdom, but a word that actually means something to the average person.
Now, you'll find books about ikigai if you look for them, amazon.jp has quite a few. But keep in mind that these books are mostly the works of self-help, business management or psychology authors (all fields that are Western in origin and highly Westernized in Japan), so the content might be similar to what you'd find in Western books about motivation or happiness, just written in Japanese.
Another thing you could do is google 生きがいの図, which is pic related. It was written in English by some self-help guy, but Japanese people started noticing it and it went a bit viral, with bloggers translating it into Japanese, comparing and contrasting their own idea of ikigai with that of the infographic and providing examples from their own lives.

Was it even japan/general for 1 year?

This board is about tangential things /a/ types want to talk about that are not anime or manga.

Exactly two years. I remember it being a lot longer, for some reason.

It's just a word that means what you think it means. No need to think about it too much.

2008-2010 felt like a very long time to me too, and the years before even longer. Time is too shallow now. Mid twenties and NEET.

It didn't really feel like anything to me. 2011-13 were a long time, especially 11 and 12 then 14-17 feel like they didn't even exist. 18 has been a pretty long year for me.

2003-2005 seems like a long time to me though. The 6-8 period all blends together because 4chan was irredeemably shitty to me by then and I was hiding out in /a/ and /v/ and later /jp/. In retrospect, I probably did more in 08-12 than anything, since that's when all those fun mmos /jp/ hopped to and from happened and 11-12, while being shit years for /jp/, were great years for anime and I had lots of fun with /a/, which I hadn't really been to since /jp/ was made.

2007 was when I started using 4chan. I spent much time absorbing/reading about the stuff of past years, so I had a more magical experience compared to someone who'd already been through it all, I suppose.

I agree about the following years, though. I even went to /a/ at the same time and I had fun, which I couldn't imagine having there right now. It's possible I've become overly sensitive because everything seems so unnecessarily trite and toxic.

You obviously don't belong here. This is not the Japan board. No one cares about OP's book.
