people were so full of shit when they said i shouldn't try to understand a grammar point by reading example sentences in grammar guides. what's convenient about grammar guides is that they'll give you like 10 examples in a row of just that grammar point. it doesn't matter that it's "unnatural" because i read a lot of natural material anyway.

Alright since you still didn't get it.
The english word "just" implies that something may be true, but it is not the only thing that is true. If I am not just trying to be a dick, I am still being a dick, but the word "just" is a modifier which implies there is a secondary descriptor for my actions aside from "dick". It should also be implied that my intention was to be helpful. To explain the sentence explicitly, it would be something like: I was being a dick, and I was also being helpful. That is an odd way of explaining that situation so I worded it more appropriately.

I sincerely hope this helps you with your second language. Knowing these subtleties will greatly help you avoid awkward situations in the future.

So I've come across times where someone ends with te-form without it being a request, attaching something (including the possibility of trailing off or continuing it in another bubble), etc. I was wondering about that.

Like this, for example. What is the purpose of it here? Do people use it automatically when they're pissed sometimes?

I want to say "yes". I really enjoyed it when I played it and there wasn't a single character or route that I didn't like. From my own subjective perspective at least, I feel like the journey leading up to the twist is enjoyable enough on its own that it's worth playing even if you know what ultimately happens in the end. But that may just be my personal bias speaking.

One of my only complaints is that the best girl never had a route in the original game which is one of the reasons why I really want to play Ecstasy at some point. I'm putting it off for now though until my reading speed gets quite a bit better because it's a really long game.

>no, i'm operating under the correct assumption that たくさん is far more common and so people are far more likely to encounter it than 沢山.
But they are still likely (guaranteed, even) to encounter 沢山 so it is worth learning. Just because the kana form is more common doesn't mean that the kanji form is uncommon. Both are common in this case, it's just that the kana form is a bit more common. You have practically no experience with native material so stop trying to dictate from your ignorance what is and isn't useful when you know nothing.

Your argument might have a point in the case of 麒麟 vs. キリン, but that's about it.

The reason that 沢山 is taught instead of たくさん is that if you learn 沢山 you get たくさん for free but not the other way around. The fact that this might cause a beginner to learn たくさん is entirely fucking irrelevant because pretty much EVERYBODY will know what たくさん means within one month of learning Japanese even through the most retarded method you can think of. "most of the translation is correct" really isn't saying much considering that 80% of any random text is going to be incredibly easy.

If a beginner can't understand a page of shounen manga, is that shounen manga really "beginner" level material? That's what they were trying to say, they could understand it so of course it is. But they didn't literally understand it. They were filling in the gaps.

This is, of course, what it should be like while you're reading, and constant exposure makes you realize what you're getting wrong and what it actually means. In that sense, if N3-san read something like this, they would probably learn a lot from it.

Until you reach a native-like level, everything you find has something for you to learn from, and you're always going to misunderstand something somewhere. I picked that page precisely because of 帝国と独立交易都市の区間.

I'm not mad or anything, and I'm not making fun of N3-san for having N3-level Japanese. I'm just trying to make a point. "Shounen manga" is an absurdly broad category, and random stuff like "does it have furigana?" and "are almost all the words common?" aren't good ways of guessing whether a beginner or intermediate will understand it well. Even within a single series, or a single volume, you're going to have a huge variation in how hard things are to understand.

You can't make blanket statements that an entire category of media is for beginners or advanced learners or any level. There are novels that are easier to read than Yotsuba. There are manga that are harder to read than 人間失格. And the closer you get to ordinary everyday Japanese the harder it is to say how hard it is for a JSL.

Also funny how you completely ignored the other guy's translation for 3 hours because you only wanted to acknowledge something with a mistake in it. And you're trying to say you aren't intentionally trying to twist facts, what a fucking joke. Fun fact, even Bob the fucking Builder has occasional lines of dialogue that a 3 year old probably won't understand, that doesn't mean it's adult-level.

Hold the phone, this entire thing started when anon said that reading shounen manga would take 10 years at 20 minutes of study per day. Then you (I assume it was you) posted that manga page as if shounen manga wasn't beginner material (I'm not arguing for or against here).
After he failed to translate it, you say, and I quote: " I'm just trying to make a point. "Shounen manga" is an absurdly broad category ... Even within a single series, or a single volume, you're going to have a huge variation in how hard things are to understand."
So barring that not all shounen is beginner level (you say yourself that they are different levels, so you agree at least some shounen is beginner level), nothing refuted that 20 minutes a day isn't enough.

Even excluding the writing part it's nowhere near possible. I am not even willing to entertain that someone truly learns 20 vocab in 20 minutes, and even if that is accepted (which it shouldn't be), it means you are spam-clicking through the ~200 daily vocabulary as fast as you can. 200 reviews in 20 minutes is possible, although that requires you to know every card and not have to spend any time on any of them, which is unlikely.

But lets assume you are a god and you know all 200 inside and out. That still leaves no time for your daily new vocabulary, which at a minimum should be 20. So you're spending lets say 2 seconds per review, which is not gonna happen but lets just assume that because why the fuck not. You're leaving yourself 10 minutes to learn all of the new vocabulary. Not just skim, I mean learn. Not buying it.

The whole thing is so silly I don't even want to talk about it anymore.

>> No.20059676

What what? I'm going to assume that was a typo. 200 new cards in 20 minutes is actually ridiculous.

I am willing to concede 20 minutes for 200 reviews (which is actually low-balling if you're far into anki, and 20 minutes for new cards per day. Which is a total of 40 minutes, not 20. And I'm even hesitant to say 40 is reasonable, but I suppose under optimal conditions every day it is possible.

memory consolidation increases better than exponentially when you also review what you're memorizing naturally (i.e. at some kind of constant-ish rate) outside of the environment of the SRS

his patrons probably didn't start supporting him because they were expecting advice on the most optimal anki interval modifier. and although he was incorrect about it, they're OK with it. hence they're still patrons. it'd be like if someone taught a fighting class and gave overall sound advice, but then gave bad scheduling advice, although hedging the bad advice with "this is a theory, you probably shouldn't change anything", like matt did. matt's still recommending good things like input. he just slaps on a bunch of dumb shit on top of it. and when he gets advice wrong it's inconvenient, but his patrons certainly don't hate him for it. i think they understand that perceived authorities can make mistakes and whether or not a mistake is horribly evil just depends on the mistake.

Nigel might know more words than anyone who has ever played the game. He has
compiled lists from the computer program LeXpert and read the OSW and a book called Redwoods
that combines the British and American lists. He has indeed been through Chambers, though not
five times. “I can look at things and remember,” he says. Nigel scans the pages of the dictionary
looking at all the words listed in boldface. He doesn’t use tenses, plurals, or definitions to help him
learn.
I ask him if he has a photographic memory. “I think there are about twenty-eight thousand definitions
of a photographic memory. I can recall images very easily, but I can’t put the image in a context. I
can remember a picture, but I can’t remember where I’ve seen it. I just have to view the word. As
long as I’ve seen the word, I can bring it back. But if I’ve only heard it or spoken it, I can’t do it at all."
Nigel doesn’t know how or why he can do what he does. School was easy, because of his memory,
but he was bored. Studying the words is boring, too. “The cycling helps. I can go through the lists in
my mind.” Nigel just conjures a mental snapshot of a list, or the specific page of a dictionary. That’s
why he can recall a word like CHLORODYNE, which isn’t on any Scrabble list because it is longer
than nine letters and isn’t in Merriam-Webster’s Tenth, the American word source. It’s only in
Chambers. “It may well be that no other Scrabble player knows that word,” Bob Felt says.

Funny, I watched 4 hours of Anime today and didn't once hear について during any episode.

I did however watch an hour of the news and read a bit while at work, and について appears all over the place because its grammatical function appears more useful in those contexts, even though it is very usable in daily life.

You can't just go about replacing every は with について though because while they have a similar "meaning" their actual usage is very different, plus as with almost any grammar you can also は について to talk ABOUT that thing.

It's hard to explain but in context it just makes sense. As I said, if I don't hear it for 4 hours worth of slice-of-life anime, it's probably true that it's used in higher registers more commonly.

I couldn't remember my story for "accomplished" in RTK but I already placed a word prompt like ”友_” so I knew and wrote the kanji correctly. Proud?

The Japanese word prompt reminded which kanji it was, but I still had to rely on my story to write it properly.

>How many years?
1.5 years
>How many hours per week?
About 12, but sometimes on the weekends I get a burst of energy and do closer to 20. Still not nearly enough, I should be doing 50 and I'm ashamed I'm not.
>Level of understanding?
N3 give or take, there are some N4 grammar I've never seen and some N1 grammar I understand but averaging it all out I think it's in the N3 territory.

now all you gotta do is prompt yourself to fill in the blank for learning japanese and you be gucci

dude wtf chill out japanese isn't a full time job
20 hours a week is plenty if you don't want your life to disintegrate into shambles because you're not even like taking out your trash or cleaning the toilet or the million other things you gotta do to live a life that isn't disgusting

I sit on my ass watching youtube videos and checking /DJT/ almost as much as I'm studying Japanese, I could be doing 50 hours and still having plenty of time to chill. 20 hours isn't a lot when I consider that half of that is during dead hours at work.

>> No.20065164

>>20065153
50 hours a week is possible if you live with your parents or have a VERY understanding friend/significant other who is willing to do all your chores for you while you study.

The real AJATT Ascetic life

>only own 1 plate, 1 bowl, 1 pair of chopsticks
>1 pot, 1 pan, 1 kitchen knife, 1 ladle, cutting board
>1 cup for drinking MAYBE a mug for tea
>also electric kettle
>only eat simple cheap things like beans, rice, no meat for maximum asceticism
>only drink water and tea
>sleep on an o-futon on your floor
>only own 10 sets of cheap, comfy clothes (special but limited provisions available for people who live in places that get extremely cold)
>you can wash your laundry in the sink and hang them to dry
>2 pairs of shoes max (3rd set special provision for winter boots if cold)
>Must live in apartment 300ft^2 or smaller
>if you must own a car, it has to be glorious nippon steel from the 80s/90s, preferably Corolla you bought for less than $2000
>otherwise walk or own cheap collapsible bike
>nicest thing in your whole apartment should be your media center
>Nice TV, nice speakers, your choice of nice laptop/computer
>thanks to your extremely limited amount of shit to fuck up/make a mess, you can now dedicate every waking moment to Japanese study
>since your monthly expenses should not exceed $500 with this setup, just trick a handful of people on the internet to give you Patreonbux to perpetuate your continued uninterrupted study
>if you must work, work a job that allows you to either read a lot in your down time, listen constantly to something on earbuds, or preferably both

Basically there is nothing more patrician than this ideal lifestyle if your only goal is to "get good" at anything. If you have a job that pays more than $15 an hour you can basically do whatever the fuck you want and take yearly trips to Japan while doing nothing but getting good when you're back in the states. Bonus points if you save up money on the side with the aim of retiring early/investing in shit.

I wonder what fantasy land you live in where renting an apartment in a neighborhood that won't steal your shit the moment you go to the store costs significantly less than $500.
