Learn the scores for 20, 25, and 30 fu. For higher values, double the fu is the same as one less han, so for example 3 han 50 fu is the same as 4 han 25 fu and 2 han 60 fu is the same as 3 han 30 fu. You basically never need 70 fu, let alone 110, but you can memorise them if you want. Then mostly it's just practice.

>> No.20063020

>>20062708
you really only need to memorize the 30 and 40fu tables for Ron/tsumo/dealer/non-dealer

most sub-mangan hands fall in those broad categories. 20fu only really happens when you have pinfu tsumo and 25 is only for chiitoitsu. 50fu and up is also uncommon unless you have some closed kans in there. a handy printed chart will resolve any other doubts

There's the java ones made by umaikeiki, but he said he would prefer if people forgot about those.

I've been using 麻雀点数ドリル, but it's just multiple choice quizzes like "親 30符 3翻 ロン" and you have to pick 5800. There's also japanese mnemonics, some of which are funny ("gomi" for 300-500, "nashi" for 400-700), and some of which are just making short words out of the numbers ("chicchi" for 7700). Might not be useful for non-native speakers (like myself).

Another japanese app I tried was just a set of descriptions on what fu and han are, with quizzes after on various scores. Again, it has no scoring of actual hands.

I wish there was something which had progressively increasing complexity. At first it would just be recognizing yaku in a hand, then counting the han value, a separate part for counting fu, and then all of it combined in a mode where you get complete hands (with the necessary miscellaneous information like player wind, oya or ko, ron or tsumo, dora, etc) and you have to input the score. You could vary this further with time attack modes or something, but really, the basic thing would suffice for becoming gods compared to the non-scoring scrubs. If it had the more basic modes I mentioned at the start then it could help teach beginners, too.

>> No.20064972

>>20064401
>>20064935
It's not that hard. It doubles with each han, so you only have to remember the values for 1 han.

30 fu : 1000 -> 2000, 3900, 7700
Then just add 300 at the first value :
40 fu : 1300 -> 2600, 5200
50 fu : 1600 -> 3200, 6400

Multiply by 1.5 for dealer turns.

If you really want to memorize them all you can add the 20 fu (aka shit hand) line : 700, 1300, 2600, 5200

I actually wrote a really long and detailed email to that guy a while back to give him feedback. Judging by your screenshot, he might have actually taken some of the advice I gave him about user interfacing. The version I played forced you to drag tiles out of your hand to where you wanted to put them or call on them, and even worse, you had to make a flicking motion to draw.

I've been having shit games for a while to be honest.

Not sure why, these days all I ever deal into are hands that I don't expect to be in tenpai (usually closed hands that have decent yaku), and tiles I drop when I riichi, these days I never come 1st or 4th. I get a few insignificant wins a lot of the time, but never an upset.

I'm guessing I'm overthinking a lot of my hands, and debating what to go for. I have to remember that even if I start with a sequence of 123 and a triplet of terminals, it doesn't mean I should instantly go for Junchan, but I seem to go with it and when it doesn't materialize I start desperately calling.

Hands that I luck into I can never seem to win off. Had a beautiful Toi Toi, Yakuhai, Dora 6 (7 if the winning tile dropped) going on, through calling and kanning, and the tile just wouldn't come out. Would've been me well into first if it did. Both were in dead wall.

Go for a fast tenpai with a good wait. Yaku are like bonuses you pick up on the way by staying alert. Getting pinfu or tanyao comes naturally when going for fast wins, as long as you don’t call tiles like a noob.

Yes, because most defense is basically reversing efficiency techniques. There is a reason you are supposed to get efficiency down first. In addition if you are winning hands faster through better efficiency you won't have to defend as much.

I had a dream where I was playing riichi with some friends in real life. Sadly it seemed like we used some flimsy cards instead of tiles, so it was pretty horrible. Is this a sign that I should get a set? Bullet points of American Mah-jongg and why it is the most Jewish of Mahjong

>1940, guy by the name of Joseph Babcock goes to China and starts importing Chinese Mahjong tiles
>Introduces it to his community back home who are largely Jewish; Hence the moniker
>Notices immediately that all of them are playing the game flagrantly wrong
>They only ever go after the big, royal-flush type hands
>Hundreds of games end in boring draws that aren't even close to finishing a hand
>Babcock says "fuck integrity" and changes the rules of the game to accommodate this idiotic playstyle
>To help facilitate this, he introduces 8 Joker tiles that can be used as pseudo-wild cards
>Creates a list of hands that players must match up exactly to instead of having a bunch of poker-style hands
>Fast forward to now
>Mah-jongg, with the dash and extra g to distinguish itself from Mahjong.
>Absolutely out of control
>To buy a basic set of tiles for the game costs $130
>This is compared to an average price of $50 for a decent set of Chinese/Japanese tiles
>Price of this is to 'account' for four large, obnoxious racks that are included with the game along with an aluminum case
>"Can't I buy the tiles without that extra stuff?"
>Price of a set of single-tone tiles [tile is one uniform color instead of one color plus backing] from the National Mah-jongg League is $55, over the price of a normal set of Asian tiles.
>This makes no sense because an American Mah-jongg tile is about as wide as a Chinese small tile, but thinner than a Japanese tile
>Meaning it has far less plastic in it than any other tile on the market outside of novelty miniature sets
>But the cost is somehow going up

>> No.20123222

>>20123217
>Additionally, single-tone tiles are very unpopular
>So the cost of a two-tone American set is a little under $100
>The price difference between a two-tone and a single-tone tile in an Asian market is nonexistent. They tend to cost the same for Asian tiles.
>There is literally no justification for jacking up the price twice as high for slightly more paint added to the same exact tiles
>But wait, there's more
>You are forced to buy the tiles if you want to play American
>Unlike the Asian versions where their sets are mostly interchangeable if you're willing to make minor sacrifices, the American version cannot be played without those Joker tiles because you're playing it in a radically different way
>Not only that, but because the tiles are thinner, you cannot properly stack them, and standing them on their ends is precarious at best, impossible at worst
>So you naturally need a rack to hold the tiles and stack the wall
>And of course, goyim, you'll need a nice case to carry all that shit with you...

>> No.20123229

>>20123222
>Oh, you think it's over? Watch this
>Wanna actually play the game?
>Well you need the official National Mah-jongg League card with this year's hands
>This will cost you roughly $8, $9 for the larger version
>This card 'changes' every year.
>If you don't have this year's card, you are not allowed to play in tournaments.
>Don't want to play in tournaments? Real shame. Tournaments are a huge cultural part of the game, so you're missing out on it.
>In fact, 90% of the players look forward to them, and aren't very interested in playing with people who aren't about that Mah-jongg life.
>Don't think you can be cute about it though
>Official tournament rules state that all players MUST have their card with them and on full display while playing
>The "Official" reason for this is that it "intimidates" other players when they see you have memorized all of the hands
>So you HAVE to have the card, and you better believe that the copyright on the card means you cannot print it out or make copies of it either. It has to be Official National Mah-jongg League™ approved.
>"So what goes into this card anyways?"
>Nothing about the manufacturing of the card is available on any of their sites
>Card itself is basically three A4 card stock paper folded together
>Researching prices, the cheapest fancy card stock I found at staples is about 6 cents per page
>A color print from staples is 11 cents per side
>The actual price is probably much lower with factory deals, but just home making one from staples is 3, double sided pages, so roughly $0.84 per card.
>$9. Per year.
>"So what? Clearly that price is to the people who make the cards and their effort"
>Ha. Ha ha.

>> No.20123238

>>20123229
>The contents of the card itself contain the hands which are printed out using color coded letters and numbers
>So you'll see "111" in green for a set of 1 bamboos, or "888" in blue for 8 circles
>This is done in what appears to be a free-font
>There are absolutely zero special symbols or pictures used to represent the tiles. Even the winds and dragons are just letters
>Meaning you, yes, you reading this, could open up LibreOffice right now and using stock settings can create an official looking Mah-jongg card, provided you were willing to fork out the $1 for the supplies.
>The actual effort involved for deciding that year's hands are not documented anywhere on site
>The only reference point on this is an interview circa 2014 or so
>Owner basically admits that he, a few other execs, and like 5-10 volunteers sit together at a meeting near the beginning of the year and decide what hands are going into the card
>Many players of Mah-jongg note that there are many "rehashes" over the years, such as spelling out "NEWS" with the winds, or writing out [CURRENT YEAR] with tiles
>Very, very few hands actually change contents at all from year to year
>Likely what happens is they update the [CURRENT YEAR] hand, maybe correct a typo or two, have the intern use their non-profit version of Microsoft Word to edit the numbers, then call it a year.
>That will be $9 goyim.
>Hmm? You still want to learn how to actually play?
>Then that will be $11 for the Official book
>That's right
>Up until 2012 or so, the National Mah-jongg League claimed to have a copyright on the rules, which is actually illegal
>Have found a few remains of older websites that have been DMCA'd for publishing them
>The only way to learn was to buy their book
>This taboo wasn't broken until YMI published the rules on their site, along with Mah-jongg time.
>Want to play online?
>Until Mah-jongg Time, the only online site to play was with the NML
>A one year subscription will be $50 plus tax.

>> No.20123245

>>20123238
>"Where the fuck does all of this extra money go for a non-profit?"
>Their website does not post the faces or any information regarding anyone who works there that they do not have to, by law, publish.
>They have a list of organizations they donate to
>According to their 501c3 public tax information, they do seem to donate 93%+ of their earnings to the organizations
>Most of the organizations only ever see anywhere between $500-$5,000, with the average donation being roughly $1,500
>This is absolutely chicken feed considering that they typically will make anywhere between $300k to $2 million a year
>At bare minimum, over 50% of their reported profit goes to a single location: Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Florida
>After this, this author's meager tax investigative skills cannot track any further
>As an apology for this, here is a fun fact: I looked into this only because I stumbled across their yelp page which had an average of 2 star ratings, one of which was someone else who had pointed out this suspicious fact
>Apparently yelp users found the National Mah-jongg League "unhelpful" and "unprofessional".

well I'm nowhere near the end of this, but I might as well try, and others will correct me.

first: wtf what does no yaku mean
second: furiten? are you kidding me?
third: why am I in furiten on this other tile that I didn't discard
fourth: I'm so unlucky, I keep getting the wrong tiles
fifth: why won't they deal into my riichi?
sixth: wtf you can't have two of the same pairs in chiitoitsu?
seventh: do I go for speed or points here? (when you go for speed, you end up lacking those 1000 points for the win, if you go for the points, the last tile just won't come)

insert the classic "tenhou is rigged" somewhere. once you get over the "it's all luck" mindset and accept that it's a part of the game that you sometimes have things like >>20143272 you will just accept things stoically (or stop playing). also, don't obsess about your rating, just keep playing and you will get better as long as you make an effort.

don't get upset if someone seems to be "lucky", if you stop playing, the bitterness will stay with you, if you keep on trucking, then eventually you'll get your "lucky" moments too.

take each game as it comes, take each round as it comes, take each turn as it comes. (e.g. don't get emotional if you deal into a dama haneman in the first round, you still have many other rounds for catching up, just play solid)

it's a game of decisions, but you only have limited information. your job is to do the best with what you have.

also don't get last place

It's more about expectation that comes the more you understand (or are trying to) the game. When you start grasping the game logic (tiles efficiency, defense, etc), you'll expect the game to follow your calculation, forgetting that in essence it's still a gambling game and it's full of bullshit that can come out of nowhere.

So if I'm reading this right, games at 5 dan don't create rank points? They just move them around or reduce them?

Is tenhou a ponzi scheme built on the suffering of lower dans and 1-2 kyu?

>> No.20153714

>>20153498
It doesn't work like that. Rank points aren't "created", they don't circulate or move between players. You lose points for fourth depending on what rank you are, and you gain points for first or second depending on what lobby you're playing in. That's it. The table is saying is that if you were 5d in tokujou (or 3d in joukyuu or 7d in houou) then placing 1 2 4 cancels out to zero.

>> No.20153735

No, I mean total rank points in the system. Imagine 4 players at 10 dan: 4th loses 180 points, and 1st and 2nd only gain 135 total. That drains 45 points from the system.

---oh wait, when you lose or gain rank, rank points are reset. So 0 can become 800, or 800 can become 600, right? Huh, that's interesting. Now the math is over my head.

>> No.20153933

>>20153880
I don't get why you're even worrying about this. Rank points don't circulate or move between players, so the total amount of rank points in the system is totally inconsequential. It's not like currency in an economy. All that matters is individual rank points.

>> No.20154273

>>20153735
This is correct, you can only drop 1 room on the same account.

>>20153880
If you want to look at it as a net then who gets 4th will determine whether the table was positive. Regardless there is an effective floor where you don't demote for losing and that is where the rest of the points that eventually bounce around come from.

>discards 1s first and deals 4p to toimen for an ippatsu tsumo
I hope I'll stop making such obvious mistakes soon. Even though I know I should discard the more dangerous tiles first, I still made this retarded mistake somehow. (Maybe my mouse was hovering nearer to the tsumohai or some other stupid reason).

this happens to me too, but it's no big deal, because I play shitty in the ones I win too

also today I learned that getting exactly 0 points does not end the game, only going minus does. (afterwards toimen got a dealer dama haneman tsumo and I ended up only second)

0.9k-0k points still means the player can't riichi.

I downloaded it and it gets stuck loading (or downloading) something. I don't know chinese so I'm not sure. my best guess on what it says "downloading riichi sticks (crossed out) mangan yakuman"

Dealing 4 pin and calling riichi, that's the stuff.

Then again, dealer riichi + non-suji middle tile. I might folded with 9 sou and waited to see if I could get tenpai back safely. The 4 pin isn't bad for that.

yeah you're right that I'm retarded for wanting to fight the oya-REEEE with an unsafe tile. my general mahjong sense is pretty baby tier, but I guess I'll just have to pay more attention to not losing instead of focusing on the big shiny button that pops up with a sound effect.

actually I find the riichi button a bit distracting on tenhou. it really is just like in that comic where the player imagines that it says "free sex". many times I decide in my head "yeah this hand is pretty valuable already, I'm in the lead, it's oorasu, I should just dama" but when that shiny button pops up it's like my body were moving on its own, and somehow the button gets pressed and I'm just sitting there watching the tiles keep flying around all over the board with dizzying speed. it feels bad

Should have thrown the dangerous tile (4p) before the safer one (1s). 4p isn't gonna help you in any way here, you have 2 double-sided waits to fill.

I tried it, surprisingly runs smooth in my hand toaster. I just wish the BGM isn't that sleep-inducing.

Time pressure used to make me hit the riichi button all the time. Plus my aggressive style from climbing 10 kyu - 2kyu.

Sometimes it takes a losing streak to remind me that not dealing in is like half of winning the game.

キタ━━━━(゚∀゚)━━━━!!
I think I'll start with the point calculating one, since it seems like the simplest book out of the three (and point calculation is important for everything else as far as I can tell). A review said that the kihon no theory book on the right is pretty basic, so I guess I'll do that one second. The middle book is the thickest I think, and it seems to cover a lot of ground. I think I'll leave that one for last.

Also, I managed to buy three books by 井出洋介 without even noticing until now.

Calculating points isn't that hard, just multiply by 2 the values of the 1 han hands for each han you gain
30 fu: 1000->2000->3900-7700
40 fu: 1300->2600->5200

etc
