This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, visual novels, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in the above or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

TBF it's not unreasonable to have not yet encountered 禅 even through months of extensive reading and vocab mining. Not like you'll forget it once you see it, but at the same time there are just those occasional rare/obscure shitter Kanji you only see once in a while that have incredibly niche use.

Shit, I only know it because がんばれゴエモン〜ネオ桃山幕府のおどり〜 has a location CALLED ざぜん町 which did not even appear as Kanji, and have not seen it in anything since then.

20043019

So some of you might know Kanshudo, it has this neat search that breaks kanji down into their components / parts

Unfortunately you can't easily use your own mnemonics on Kanshudo, so I've pretty much recreated Kanshudo in an excel sheet that allows me to paste in a Kanji and it creates a copy-pasteable anki snippet of a kanji's components (and the components' components) with my own mnemonics I have defined in said excel sheet

I'm thinking about polishing this up and turning it into an actual website, pretty much like kanshudo (kanji with component-trees) mixed with koohii (mnemonics are user created and you can vote on the top mnemonics so they can easily be used by others). Looking for feedback if anybody would actually be interested in such a website, otherwise I won't bother with the public community voting-functionality and keep it local to myself only

pic related, kanshudo which breaks down a kanji into parts with (unfortunately shitty) mnemonics. It'd essentially be that, except the mnemonics are user-created and you can either create your own mnemonics, or use other users'

>> No.20043119

>>20043019
if someone is going to dedicate time to isolated kanji study then they can just do RTK which teaches component parts and gradually builds up to more complex kanji. Also koohi is shit for memory, but probably good if you're just doing lazy kanji or some shit like that because you're afraid of reading

>> No.20043140

>>20043119
Yeah I thought as much.

I think inidivudal kanji study like RTK is retarded, so I'm learning kanji in the order they actually appear in my reading material. If I don't know a kanji's components I learn those with the actual vocab (which is why I like Kanshudo's complete breakdown of a kanji, since it just lets me learn everything at once for a piece of vocab)

But I'm guessing I'm pretty unusual in that way of doing things

I remember the first 5 were super hard! But near the end it got easier. Hopefully kanji is the same way...Another thing is that I have been learning it for 2 years now. Off an on. So I feel like it's something I know. Not something that I have crammed for and will forget. I have known all my kana for a few months now but I am now at a point where I can read it well and fast without mistakes. I bought genki 1 in May but didn't want to start until my kana was solid. I will start it tonight. I didn't post much but I read here alot. Also I used to think the matrix was all weird characters but now since I know all the kana it makes sense to me!

leyline is a pretty good VN, but if it's your first read then it's gonna be tough. unfortunately your first read is going to be tough no matter what. i think the issue with VNs for beginners is that it takes forever for them to become very interesting and you might burn out before then. have you tried reading kino no tabi? since each chapter is a self contained story, you get a complete experience each time you finish one. it's a little bit harder but it'll at least give you a full beginning, middle, and end each time and thus might lead to a more satisfying result. just don't get stuck on the prologue because it's a little philosophical and might be confusing.

What is with all you meme learners and mattcocksuckers who are so obsessed with time. It's a process, it takes years of DOING i.e. speaking and "producing".
Language is and has always been a tool for human communication. It's not like autistically memorizing a list of pokemans.
Similarly people learn the piano by playing it. They don't learn by staring at sheet music 8 hours a day and never touching a single key.

That is the exact opposite of an argument. The more you post the stupider you make yourself look.

Anyone know if there is a way I can switch between card layouts without having to constantly edit the fields. Sometimes I like to add audio to the front of my core deck cards and remove the kanji so I can try to write them without seeing. But it's tedious to go back and forth all the time.

If I can watch youtube, the news, and anime without any kind of subtitle, play whatever games I want, and read whatever I want as long as it's not academic, do I know Japanese? This is a rhetorical question.

You know all the Japanese that's worth learning for your situation.
I'm at this point and when I occassionally look up a words it's all shit that's not even worth mining.

If your situation changes your Japanese needs will change as well, but unless you move to Japan that probably won't happen.

I'm honestly trying to do it in a year. So far I'm on track. I used to live there when I was a kid so I have a bit of an edge but now I'm doing 24hour/day extreme studying since I'm jobless and I'm going to set the record for the fastest to get fluent.
