No one ever cared how superior you were about 2hu before in a negative way, aside from just not liking meme-spouting youtube fags. 2hu is not something that ever required or had internal elitism before, such behavior never was and never should be part of 2hu. No, you can’t exclude them currently. In eratohok you can kill them all off using the cheat menu, which is kind of a hassle but easily doable. In eratohotw you can’t do anything about them existing, but you can easily ignore them and focus your affections on other girls. A few of the other era touhou games don’t have PC 98 girls but they tend to be half translated at best. Machine translations don’t really work well for erotica either.

Bad Apple, every IOSYS video, UN Owen/"Death Waltz", Night of Nights, even fucking Ran Ran Ruu.
Touhou doujin music also has far more traction and popularity than any other of its peers other than the extremely rare fanmade anime series.

If there were no cute girls to cast would be half empty and it wouldn't have gotten nearly as much exposure due to the popularity of the female characters. They're one of the most prominent things that people walk away from the show with. Sure, it's not the sole reason, but that's a huge part of it all, because Anno (in all of his glory, blessed be his name) is a hypocritical faggot who couldn't handle people enjoying the characters he made.
