TOKYO, Japan (CNN) -- Japan executed four convicted killers on death row on Thursday, the government said, marking the first set of executions in the country since October 2008.

All four criminals were hanged, Japan's primary method of execution, the Justice Ministry said. The ministry identified the inmates as: 58-year-old Tadashi Makino, convicted of murdering four women in separate home invasion robberies; 44-year-old Yukinari Kawamura and 39-year-old Tetsuya Sato, both convicted of killing two women and burning their bodies in steel barrels; and 16-year-old Natsumi Tsuji, convicted of violently murdering a classmate.

The executions represented blatant human rights violations, said Amnesty International spokesman Makoto Teranaka. "Japan is going against the rest of the world by increasing the pace of executions, at a time when other countries are slowing their pace."

>> No.1994952

I'm pretty much of two minds about this.

On one hand, Japan has a ridiculously high conviction rate- something like 90% of trials go to the "guilty" verdict. You're pretty much guilty until proven innocent. So there's a chance those people did not commit those crimes.

On the other hand, there's a good chance they DID commit those crimes, in which case I'd rather they be executed than take up valuable resources dicking around in prison.

Also, the method of execution is a little behind the times. Hanging is a very brutal way to kill someone.

So basically, in theory I support the death penalty (if the person actually did kill someone else in cold blood) but in reality a significant percentage of false convictions exist.

Murderers should be executed, since that's what they fear most and what can most deter future criminals.
As for the way of execution, it really doesn't matter as long as it's effective and not intended to torture them, since you are killing them anyway.
Hanging seems quite reasonable, it's simple, effective, inreversible and few things can go wrong with it. Shooting may cause some mess and cause more shock to the executioner while injection is expensive and wasting tax money.

Why would anyone ever in the history of the universe murder women? You're wasting good sex slaves that way and you're already going to be hanged.

As for my beliefs on capital punishment, it's simple logic that I feel works for me. If I put a sign up at the edge of a cliff with a warning that says: "If you jump off this cliff you will die" and someone jumps off the cliff it's their choice to die. If I put up a sign that says, "If you murder someone you will die" and they murder someone, it's their choice to die.

I honestly feel that most human rights activists are uttering bullshit in order to feel better about some criminal who doesn't deserve a moment of our consideration and time.

except the ways of punishment have nothing to do with the rate of conviction.
death penalty doesn't mean you should or need to convict less criminals, which is very wrong.
now with a consistent rate of conviction, do you still think somehow capital punishment is less effective than life imprisonment which basically means you will get released at an old age.

>> No.1995120

Executions should be brutal and televised on on every channel, say, at 6PM once a month. One of the reasons people commit murder is because they're not afraid of getting caught.

>> No.1995132

There's something else I'd like people to think about. If I'm lividly angry at someone and I kill them I've ended their ability to live, change, have children, influence society etc and I continue to live it's putting the power in the hands of the criminal isn't it?

I can think to myself, I can end this man's existence for pissing me off and all that'll happen to me is life in prison where I still have choices, I'll still be capable of "repenting" and getting out of prison, I'll still be able to find some way of breaking out or serving my time till I'm set free but the person I killed is gone, he no longer has choices. If I hated someone enough, it sounds like a fair deal to me, he's gone forever and I continue to live.

I would never want anyone having the idea that murder will not go punished with death. If I kill someone I die is a pretty damned good deterrent. Check out some Arabic countries for instance, you steal something they cut your damn hand off, do it again and there goes the other one. Guess how many people are thieves in those countries?

We may not like it but capital punishment as a deterrent does seem to work.

Who says it works? I doubt crime rates are significantly lower than in most Western nations. Besides, if I hated someone so much that killing him or her becomes my sole reason d'être, I would no longer care for my own life. In fact, I would probably prefer death over a life sentence.

The recorded rate of crime for offenses like rape, burglary, and larceny is very low compared to Japan - usually about 10%, and sometimes a great deal more.

When it comes to homicide, it's closer to 2/3rds - close to Qatar, and other barbarous countries such as Spain and Norway. The car theft rate is actually about 50% higher than Japan and about half that of the U.S.

I guess the lesson we can take away from all this is that rape and pillage are bad but murder and carjacking are awwwright.
