If you wouldn't mind, I have a question regarding the first link in the op and feedback would be appreciated.
As a response to a request an alternative colour set has been added to the site in the form of a persistent day/night toggle. Pic related is an example of each of the two style sheets next to an alternative font choice. The reason for this is that on the light version the main body font may not be as easy to read as the darker colours.
Which sides do you find better for reading, for each dark and light version?

Steve is actually why I have the question. I figured that reading the same thing n times will drill the vocab into your head through context, but then I thought that if the words really are important then I'll run into them a lot in other texts anyway.

>>19861656
>>19861677
Yeah I see what you mean, it's easy to think you know what something means because it makes sense in one context, when in fact you're completely wrong.

Removing the all-or-nothing hypothetical, how many times would you re-read the same thing? For me it depends on the length and how interesting it is. An NHK Easy article I might read 2 times, a game like Pokemon I'm not likely to replay. Fairy tales are longer than news articles but they're interesting so I'm likely to reread those a lot, I think I read 赤ずきん 50 times by now.

Seeing/Hearing the WORDS over and over again can help reduce the lag time between hearing/seeing it and comprehending it, so you can take things in quicker without having to realize what is being said.

This is mostly why people meme SRS, especially sentences with audio, but I think as long as you're listening to things in general you're going to pick things up at a similar rate regardless.

Either way, it's not a fast-going process, as it takes time to really drill the words into your soul. Might as well just take as much in as possible and accept that 100% of it is not gonna stick right away, or even after a week or a month. Whole point is to slowly reduce the unknowns to the point where you can infer the meanings of unknowns through context alone.

>> No.19861864

>>19861839
Krashen makes a distinction between learning and acquiring language, learning being studying grammar rules and what-not. Monitoring is when your brain uses the grammar rules its learned to make sure what you said/read/etc is correct. Obviously stopping yourself after a sentence in a VN and asking yourself "ok so this said _____, right?" or "this grammar connects to this grammar, so it means ____." etc is slowing you down. Just because you know what a sentence said doesn't mean you understand it, if you have to translate it in your head then the rule isn't fluent in your mind.

>> No.19861889

>>19861839

further than the fact that thinking about grammar means it isn't instinctive, there's not much reason to believe that it's an effective use of your time towards making it so. after all, instinct isn't what you're practicing when you do it, you're practicing breaking sentences down consciously rather than absorbing them naturally.
if you're interested in the content and a particular line is important to understanding what is going on overall, it's fine to break it down, but it's not what you need to practice.

>> No.19861911

>>19861889
As long as you don't intentionally break everything down every time, you'll find that your brain starts monitoring less and less, assuming it knows what's going on in the sentence. For example, a beginner will monitor 私はXです sentences but will slowly stop doing that because they'll come to understand は and です intuitively.

That did stick out a little bit, somewhat annoying. The font/s for that are
>Noto Sans", "Noto Sans CJK JP", sans-serif
These are supposed to be "friendly" for the web and most devices. I've tried to keep the colour palette for each dark and light modes relatively limited and neutral, if that's the right word, but it has only had one set of eyes to see how it works. I don't know.

Not to be a pest but if anyone had any other feed or anything I'd be happy to take it on board. The last time I asked for feedback in the thread there was a bunch of input. At the moment most of it has been integrated into the site, with a little bit left to do.
Once the current stuff it all up to date, which shouldn't take long, the backup mega link will be updated.

There's a sweet spot you'll wanna be at before you dive into something like this.

Like, you'll wanna be around 5000 or so words with more than the basics of grammar under your belt. You need to pretty much be able to have any new concept explained to you in Japanese and be able to understand it fairly well.

There are no dictionaries on the street. Your friends are gonna explain things to you like you were a child. You can't rely on flashcards when you're at the コンビニ.

Experience will be your most powerful tool for remembering things though. You'll never forget learning new words and ideas because you'll have novel, interesting experiences backing them up. You'll associate the feelings, sights, smells, tastes, and sounds of all the new things you'll learn which is more powerful than the glow of your computer screen in terms of memory building.

In 3 months of being in Japan, starting from zero... you won't learn much. You'll have better returns on your learning if you put 6 months to a year in before you go.

I disagree with this, nobody is going to want to take the time to stop a conversation they're having to explain grammar to you.

Overall I agree with your sentiments that you want to have some Japanese under your belt before you go. Being immersed in Japan will hone the skills you already have but it won't be your grammar textbook.

>Japanese Graded Readers (JGR's) are written in easy and controlled language for foreign or second language learners of Japanese. They are graded according to the size of vocabulary, complexity of grammar structures and the total number of words used in each book. They are designed to cater to all levels from beginners to advanced students.
>For most language learners, reading Japanese books has been a daunting task. There are many unknown words, kanji and expressions beyond their level or understanding. JGR's have changed all that so now students can enjoy reading without having to constantly stop and look up unknown kanji, words or phrases in the dictionary. Research has also shown that students who read in Japanese improve their Japanese in other area of the language at a faster rate than students who don't read.
I appreciate your effort but why read this when you can read compelling content? Post table of content, it may be interesting.

They can't tell you that natives would use A, but B sounds weird and would never be used my a native.

That's why 10000 hours of anime isn't a meme.

It's kinda ironic that while some of us are trying to mechanize speaking a language by coming up with some mental algorithm based on grammar rules and memorizing a database of vocabulary, Computer AIs are doing the opposite and instead consuming 10000 labeled pictures of a dog to understand what a dog is.

I go over forgotten cards again before going to bed(reps in morning) mostly because I have lapsed cards reset to last passed interval. But reviewing every card again is overkill and though it doesn't hurt vs doing nothing its a waste of time compared to reading/listening. Anki is just a supplement to reading/listening, more than an hour every day is probably a bad idea and that hour is more productive as new cards + reps not cramming.

It is time we dropped the new site and went back to the old site only in the OP.

The retard maintaining it has gone rogue and refuses to listen to the majority of the thread.

Look at how he handles constructive criticism.

http://users.smartgb.com/g/g.php?a=s&i=g18-83684-b0

The Guide is all that matters and new learners have no reasonable way to find it.

It needs to be scrapped from the OP.

In fact, we should use a wiki instead and remove the silly ego factor entirely. I suggest wiki.wareya.moe

"This usage arose as a euphemism from the Chinese translation, fāngbiàn 方便 ("convenient"), of Sanskrit upāya, that is to say, "skillful means" or "skill-in-means," which implies teaching at a suitable level for or with devices appropriate to one's auditor. In medieval Chinese Buddhist monasteries, fāngbiàn 方便 ("convenient") became a euphemism used by monks who wanted to go to the toilet, but it soon spread to the general populace. Still today, in colloquial parlance, fāngbiàn 方便 ("convenient") can mean "go to the toilet"."
