This is a Japanese language learning thread for people interested in anime, manga, visual novels, light novels and Japanese video games.
If you have not read or listened to Japanese for at least 2 hours yet today, please leave and don't come back until you have.

Stick with things you mostly understand. Whether that's idol shows, 日本語の森 videos, ドラえもん, たけしの万物創世記, or whatever else.

I'm the fag who keeps recommending IGN JAPAN because this is the sort of shit that's gonna get you out of the Nukemarine-tier 悠久な新米 stage as quickly as possible. There's enough variety here that you should be able to find something reasonably entertaining that you can also mostly understand without too much help. Here, have some ゲームの神様に20の質問

I'm honestly not sure myself
I've rewatched some of the older animes I used to watch as a kid like Dragon Ball and stuff, but aside from that it's all idol shows and GCCX since that's why I learned Japanese, and I don't care about much else
Tried to get into some newer anime for variety but it just doesn't hold my interest

It's not, but people like Nuke should have given up Japanese a long time ago and studied something that plays to the strength of the SRS thing (and their addiction to it). Not that I'd want to see Nukemarine be a lawyer or a doctor, but at least those are things you can become reasonably good at in 8+ years with extensive study and use of an SRS.

I'm reading this today: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/easy/k10011615361000/k10011615361000.html

Inside, it says this:

>NHKが7日の午後2時までに警察や町などに聞いて調べると、亡くなった人は11人、心臓と呼吸が止まっている人は7人、どこにいるかわからない人は22人でした。

I interpreted this as saying

>police and other townspeople searching told NHK that since 2PM on the 7th, they had found 11 people dead, 7 people whose pulse and breathing had stopped, and that 22 people's locations were unknown.

1) Is this correct? Did I miss anything (big or small)
2) Why did they separate these two ideas:

>亡くなった人は11人

>心臓と呼吸が止まっている人は7人

同じの? Aren't they the same thing?

Oh, so it's like that book that is written using only the 1,000 (or ten hundred) most common English words. It all makes sense, but some of the phrases are totally weird and unnatural because no one who spoke the language naturally would ever say them. Like, the book says that if you get subjected to too much radiation, then "food comes out your mouth and you die" which is a very over-simplified way of saying that you get really sick and vomit everywhere.

At any rate, the nice part is that once your knowledge is up to a certain point (probably 3000-5000 words worth of vocab, knowledge of basic grammar) you can start having things explained to you in Japanese. That's one of the neat things about 日本語の森, by the time you will find those videos truly useful you will also possess the knowledge to learn the new words/concepts/grammar IN Japanese which is much more efficient than dealing with any amount of English.

Much harder to explain "new" concepts to an adult who already knows them though. A little kid doesn't yet know that a Volcano is a mountain that shoots out fire and lava, or that an eruption is WHEN the volcano shoots out fire and lava, or that lava is just rocks that got so hot they melted, or that melting is what ice does when it gets hot.

This is also why I think it's easier to learn new/foreign things in a new language, because you're assigning an entirely new concept to an entirely new word. This is especially evident with food, we don't really argue with what a food is called no matter what language it's in, it is just whatever it is. Same applies to peoples' names really, or the names of cars, or nonsense words/etc in stories and games.

Basically, someone needs to figure out a way to make people temporarily forget their native language so actual meaning/language acquisition can be done properly. Then again, listening to people like Matt and Nukemarine lowers one's IQ enough that you may forget English entirely...

Unofficial ones are shit too.

Official ones tend to be better in terms of actually translating correctly, but they go way overboard with localization when it comes to anything specific to Japanese culture and society. Unofficial translations often expect the reader to actually know a bit about Japan, or to be prepared to use Google if they don't, which I think is the better approach, but I can understand why the publishers behind official translations don't want to do things this way (they worry they'll scare away potential customers if they use terms that said potential customers might not understand).

I read an interview with James Heisig where he mentioned learning to speak Japanese by playing with children, somewhere up in the mountains. How could you even make this stuff up? So when I heard the man was in Tokyo, I knew I had to ask him about it.

Because here’s the extent of what I learned from children by teaching grade school in Japan for several years: The word for lunch. How to say “I’m so cold.” How to say “I’m so hot.” How to grab your teacher’s penis and exclaim “bigu sticku.” How to insert your fingers up his butt in a move known as the kancho. Beyond that, children typically ramble about some toy or cartoon or playground game. They’re not going to coach you on how to make hotel reservations or order up another plate of gyoza. The idea that one could learn to speak from them is insane. They can’t even use the language decently themselves. That’s because they’re freaking kids.

I met Heisig at a writer’s workshop. He seemed a pleasant enough fellow, and a fine teller of grandiose stories. After listening to his well-polished tale about singlehandedly inventing a way of learning Japanese characters that millions of Japanese folks had never thought of in their thousands of years of history, I finally got a chance to ask him, “How did you learn to speak it?”

“I played baseball with the kids,” was his reply. “Up in the mountains. In Nagano.

“You played baseball?” I asked. “With children?

“Yep.

“And that’s how you learned to speak Japanese?

“Sure. Children are the best teachers.”

Now, that sounds reasonable. Everybody nodded. But it isn’t reasonable. It sounds good, but it’s actually nuts. Children are the worst teachers. They make no damn sense.

You know, over the years, I’ve asked many people how they learned Japanese, and their answers consistently fall into one of two categories. They either describe a systematic method pursued diligently over the course of several years, or they make up some convenient bullshit because they don’t really want to respond to the question. I looked at Heisig, and had my answer.

I finally did it, i finished my 14th light novel, and this time it only took me 30 hours, I ended it in a week and only had to do 1 to 2 check up a page.
I feel like i know a shit lot of vocabulary, but still not enough i keep saying to myself "dammit, i should have known that one" when checking some.
I am talking here even though i have classes in 5 hours and didn't sleep at all, but at least i finished this book.

This is incorrect. Marked by が, NHK is the subject. The doer of the action, 聞いて調べる. NHK asked the police and the town (not townspeople.) に in the sentence basically indicates the target of action, i.e. who was asked.

How do you keep motivated to study?

My level is alright, approaching N2. I'm just at a point where I'm freshly graduated from University and looking for a job, and I'm torn between working on projects and doing research to expand my skill-set for jobs in my field (Cartography/GIS), and studying Japanese. I suppose I could just do both though. I'm just exhausted and so my kanji study has suffered.

Anyways, any good book recommendations? Manga is fine too, but I need more practice reading more than just manga.

changing く to う is a thing people did back in olden times and it went along with the -a sound right before it turning into an -o sound if there was one

you see the remnants of this in modern words like ようこそ (from よくこそいらっしゃいました), 全うする (from まったくする), おめでとう (おめでたく) and ありがとう (ありがたく) and also it's still used in regional dialects which is what that dude in your comic book is appropriating

>it lays out options and says "pick what you think would suit you".
This would be fine it there were no bad options laid out in the guide, but unfortunately that is not the case.

Much of the guide was penned by (most likely well-meaning) beginners just pulling stuff out of their asses based on what seemed sensible to them at the time. Why do you think there is such a mess of different options listed there? It's because there were a bunch of beginners all using different methods who thought that their method was best one and that they needed to tell everyone else about it so that they'd use it too.

It doesn't seem to happen so much these days, but if you look at how the threads used to go a while back it's obvious. We would just have thread after thread of beginners arguing over which resource and which method was the best one and telling everyone else their their methods and resources were shit. These people were freely able to edit the guide to reflect their opinions and they did.

3 read a simple grammar guide (not a textbook, not pomax, not imabi)
4 read and listen to a lot of japanese (do this at the same time as points 2 and 3)

good reading/listening material for absolute beginners:

manga with furigana, not meant for young children
visual novels with a texthooker and a mouseover dictionary
DO NOT use parsers (word boundary/part of speech marking tools) or machine translation tools (ATLAS, google translate, etc). they're bad

music is very good for phonemic awareness. just don't expect to learn much vocabulary or grammar from it.
anime. yes. really.
youtube - there are lots of videos with hard captions because of how Japanese dialects work.

Listening is very important, almost mandatory, but it's very slow to learn by listening alone. Reading will be your primary source of practice, for a lot of reasons. The most obvious is that reading works at your own pace, and listening doesn't, but spoken Japanese also has more ambiguity problems (including large numbers of homophones) that written Japanese does not have. These aren't problems for the intermediate learner, but spoken Japanese can brutalize an absolute beginner if their ears don't know what they're looking for.

This doesn't mean you should avoid listening comprehension. You want to be able to understand as much spoken as possible. If your reading comprehension skills get too far ahead of your listening comprehension skills, your learning will slow down, because the deepest instinctive language learning parts of your brain won't be operating efficiently.

I am assuming you don't understand step 2. This is just the best amount to set you up for picking up grammar from reading and listening as you will be able to identify what each word is. A lot of grammar study is pretty useless as you can only truly understand grammar through a lot of exposure and no amount of brute force can overcome that.

word types: nouns, verbs, adj, etc.
particles: things like は、でも、から, etc.
agglutination: forms of verbs like いる->いれば

does it make more sense now?
