Last thread died.

After being in the BJD hobby for many years, I'd really like to branch out and get some anime styled dolls. The trouble is, unlike BJD, there are so many different varieties of doll - vinyl, resin, Smartdoll, Azone, DD etc so I'm kinda lost. Is there any one place I can go to learn about the different kinds? I'm not fussed about whether it's vinyl or resin, I know I don't want a Smartdoll but aside from that I'm undecided. Possibly whichever material is easier to dye as I have a customisation idea?

Yeah, I'd like to dye her skin a fantasy colour. I've seen a few dyed customs done by Japanese owners, I can't remember who or I'd post pictures. I guess resin is probably a better choice over vinyl for that?

>> No.19797734

Well that's certainly interesting taking what most people would consider a flaw with vinyl dolls and turning it into something unique. But vinyl dolls would be the way to go for that experiment.

Definitely a vinyl doll for dyed skin, as the vinyl stains easy to begin with. Past that I guess it just depends on what brand you want to use and how much you want to sink into the experiment.

Has anyone ever entered a lottery here? I actually entered for Kaede earlier today and just wanted to get a general idea of how everything goes. Are there multiple winners or just one? And you have to be ready to pay if you somehow win correct?

Yeah, I haven't heard much on how it affects vinyl color but it yellows resin dolls much more quickly than they naturally yellow. Both resin and vinyl absorb the smell, vinyl I believe absorbs it worse. Smoking also causes PVC figs to get discolored so I assume it would affect vinyl in some way.

Dark colors stain vinyl, you can minimize risk by washing dark clothes before putting them on dolls, and I hear using vinegar during the wash helps set the dye more. The only true way to avoid it is with a resin doll, or using stain prevention liners, but even those aren't foolproof though.

Light colors shouldn't stain the vinyl though.

>> No.19937825

The only stain I've encountered was on a hand touching the outside of dark clothing.

All true but even with light colors you can get stains if it has darker colored treads, I've learned that the hard way.

>stopped trying to prevent all possible stains and instead deal with them if they happen

For whatever reason stain treating my dolls changes the texture of the vinyl and I don't like it. So I started using designated staining body parts for any clothes that are likely to stain. I'm a pantyhose and stocking enthusiast and those in black are notorious stainers, so I have a few sets of legs and torsos that are already stained, I just swap them out with clothing changes.

Resin dolls for me are also extremely hit-or-miss. I got one of the only ones I liked after looking at many resin dolls. I think it's really up to the individual sculpt so you just have to keep looking and not swear off a whole type of doll entirely.

2D Doll has anime-styled sculpts, and their bodies are really pretty and are apparently pretty good in general. SQ Labs make nice anime-styled heads, but their bodies apparently don't pose well so they're best paired with a Dollfie dream, obitsu, or other appropriately scaled body.

Do older DDs have any problems? I have a Len currently but was thinking about getting Beatrice. I noticed for things like old nendoroids it is much harder to pose them in comparison to the new ones.

>> No.19946988

>>19946875
Well Beatrice is on a DD2 body which will feel a bit different and has slightly different abilities to pose versus the DDS body, but it'd be nothing like comparing a #033 Miku nendo to like a new Magical Mirai Miku nendo. There's not as big of a quality gap for DDs as there is for nendos, especially if the DD hasn't been played with a lot or left in the sun/a smoking household. Beatrice is expensive, but she's one of the more lovely sculpts imo.

Beatrice doesn't have any problems per se.

It is an older design. Therefore, the elbows and wrist are of the older type with less range of motion. The headcap might be the older version which requires heat to remove.

Hi anons... you have ruined my life. I never wanted a doll before I started lurking here... now I want so many dolls -- many of which are rare and almost impossible to find. (I hate Soom as a company now.)

I want to get a doll, but I don't even know where to begin. I like the DDdy dolls, but dressing them looks difficult and everything Volks makes is expensive. I don't know if I want to get a Smartdoll, though... and then the thought of customizing everything is a nightmare. I want an adorable expressive doll like the one in the OP, but I don't think I'm capable of modifying a doll that much myself, or where I would go to even find a head/eyes like that.

I just want a friend to take cute doll photos of. I want the life of the guy in this photo.

How did you guys start out? I'm reading the guide, but... advice would be so appreciated. Thanks, anons.

(Also, where would one go to find used/non-mint dolls? I know there's mandarake and the DoA forums, but I would rather not go through the posting rigmarole to access the marketplace in the latter.)

I know your pain.

If you're looking for second hand dolls, Yahoo Auctions JP is where you'll want to look for reasonable pricing, but you'll need a deputy to do your bidding for you, as you need to be in Japan to bid. DDdy dolls don't have to be difficult to dress, you can always look around on Etsy and lots of other doll shops stock stuff for them, and a lot are reasonably prices, but quality can vary greatly. Get the doll you want, if you settle for something "Good enough" you'll have less fun even if there are more options for dressing. As for self modifying face-ups and the like, blank heads can usually be pretty cheap if you get a resin one you can learn on that and it'll never keep any of the color stains while you learn how to do it.

Just have fun with it, if the idea of modifying is worrisome, there are always people on sites like Etsy that offer commission work for customs. Just make sure they're well reviewed before you send.

I haven't got my own doll yet, should be getting her by the end of the year. But I've done a lot of research, and you should too! It's a huge price tag to dive into quickly, take your time and figure out exactly what you want, and what you want from the doll. What kind of photos do you want, what kinds of poses. Have you looked at any resin dolls yet? That's a different ball game too.

Good luck and have fun!

Thank you anon, I appreciate your replying to me. The price tag is such a big investment, I can't dive into something like this easily -- but as time has gone on, I've decided that this really is where I'd like to throw my income now and then, when I can. I don't know how it got to this point, but I'm glad that it did.

And I think you're right, too -- there are blanks to practice on and if it turns out that I colossally suck, I can find someone to do the job for me. I think for me it's going to come down to finding the one I can't stop thinking about. I know I'll get there. I feel like part of my fears were about damaging the doll -- so many parts, so much room for error -- but as I've learned more about them, I'm not as scared now. They're resilient with proper care. I think I'll be okay.

I want to take cute photos of my dolls hiding in the flowers growing here, or looking close at snails and toads, or sitting on the counter with a tiny plate of food while I make dinner, just.. domestic things. There are so many options, and that really interests me! (Photography and dolls are both the worst hobbies on a limited budget, but I do love them both.)

Whenever I do make my choice, I know I'm going to come here and post her right away. This thread has helped me so much in finding my way through this hobby. You're good people, anons.

(As for dolls made of other materials, I think it's hit and miss for me -- some dolls I would kill for (Soom Noelia, The Fairyline Centaur,) and others I'm not so interested in. But there are so many limited releases and hard to find dolls that I tend to want to stay out of it from self-preservation more than anything else.)

Pic related is one of my favorite dolls I've seen. She's so cute!

Also, yep! Although you can DIY with a blank head, a good majority of the heads sold on YJ!A have custom faceups (doll makeup that can have many different expressions.) Pic related is a good look at my DDH01's faceup.

There are few stores that I know of that make specifically for them, and even then, with the slight differences aside, most SD 1/3 standard clothes fit a range of dolls/sizes. Like for Volks stuff, if it fits a DD(M) and DD(L) it'll fit a smartdoll with the standard small bust fine. DDdy are a little loose on them though but better on the medium bust for Smartdoll.
