For some reason i can't understand spoken Japanese without Japanese subtitles. It's not a problem with failing to recognize sounds as much as i don't seem to recognize the meaning unless i look at word in text form for some vocabulary.

This is something that should be considered, though. If you need a texthooker or constant dictionary lookups (probably bilingual dictionaries at that, too) and take 100 hours to finish something that takes 20 hours for someone who knows the language, you most certainly are reading it with terrible pacing and comprehension and missing out on a lot of the finer details.

Don't bother memorizing all the definitions for that. Just remember that 掛ける is transitive and 掛かる is intransitive, and then "learn" it through reading and absorption because you'll be seeing it so often that you won't need Anki for it.

The fact that they're boring and drag on for ages might have something to do with it. I just listen to the audio from the heroine's lines without bothering to look up any unknown words and then skip everything else. Most of the text in the H scenes is literally just the same thing being said over and over again, just slightly rephrased, anyway.

I've just switched to Rikaichamp for now. Actually, I probably won't ever go back to Yomichan even if the maintainer comes back since this works way better, looks nicer, and I don't care about the lack of Anki integration since I don't use it. Wish I'd decided to try it out sooner honestly.

You can skip a day, that's fine. Just make sure to clear those due cards as soon as you can, because although the algorithm will try to handle these cards being older than they should be, it's not meant for my-pace usage. Else your cards will pile up and your will to live will decrease. But don't expect to just be able to study once a week or so. You really need to put the time into it!

>changes hard/good/easy to all be the same
this nukes the ease factor problem
this way it's basically just yes/no and when you 'no' [i.e. 'again'] it doesn't fuck around with the intervals

Feels really good to have dropped anki. Now I just read whenever I want and I don't have to be anxious about "falling behind on my reps" or missing an arbitrary retention percentage.

Sometimes I only read a couple of pages a day, sometimes I read almost the entire day. All in all I'm reading more because I don't have the constant anxiety of anki in the back of my head.

I don't really care about the words, they are just a trigger to get me to write the correct kanji. Kind of like the keywords in RTK. I'm sure I'll learn some of them just by seeing them so often, but I only test reading+definition->kanji.

My goal is to be able to visualize the kanji in my head, which was impossible before. I don't really care about writing by hand, but it is the best way to reach my goal, so I'm doing it.

The only irritating thing so far is words that use different kanji but have the same reading and meaning. Like 作る and 造る, or 柔らかい and 軟らかい. I have to add little notes to the word, like つくる(not 作).

on the other hand i'm at that point where i can read 2000 kanji in various contexts so learning them isn't an issue like for the ones matt memed into starting with it, but i'm also not planning to start production for another year so i also don't gain any benefit from being able to write them (yet)

There's no problem with a word like 悲鳴, but putting every definition of 捉える on your card would just be ridiculous.

Also, it seems to me like it would be really easy to start confusing words with similar definitions like 光景 and 景色 if you were drilling them in the context-less format of a vocab card in Anki. What do you do about that problem?
