This is something that should be considered, though. If you need a texthooker or constant dictionary lookups (probably bilingual dictionaries at that, too) and take 100 hours to finish something that takes 20 hours for someone who knows the language, you most certainly are reading it with terrible pacing and comprehension and missing out on a lot of the finer details.

I let her not eat instant foods as much as possible, and gave nutritious dishes every day.
And, in order to make her a well-behaved person, let her take a decent position.

Thanks oniichan.

I'm a bit confused about インスタント系 though. I know it apparently means instant food but looking up 系 doesn't seem to have anything to do with that meaning at all. Just looks like "instant system" or something. What the fuck?

>kanji is definitely more similar to a word than a letter
While this is true, kanji and words aren't just "slightly" different. They are two very different things. Especially when it comes to 訓読み, it is obvious that there are words, and then there are kanji used to write those words, and they don't have a 1 to 1 correspondence.
See, a word is something that has sound and meaning, but no graphical form: any linguist would tell you that spoken language is enormously more important than written language, to the point that it's not necessary to consider written form at all to analyse the language (some say that Japanese is a notable exception). A letter is something that has sound and graphical form. Kanji have meaning and graphical form, but no sound of their own. You can argue that onyomi readings belong to the kanji, but for kunyomi that's not true, as kunyomi readings simply list the most common ways to write words with that kanji, and they aren't exhaustive.

While you may say that words have form and kanji have sound, words get their form only through letters (or kanji) used to write them, and kanji get their sounds only through words they are used in.

prioritize learning stuff you're currently running into, realize that studying more words that re-use kanji readings you've already been exposed to will help reinforce the existing words, and don't be in a rush to hit some arbitrary number of unique kanji thinking you can "get it out of the way", that's my advice

>> No.19790607

Feels really good to have dropped anki. Now I just read whenever I want and I don't have to be anxious about "falling behind on my reps" or missing an arbitrary retention percentage.

Sometimes I only read a couple of pages a day, sometimes I read almost the entire day. All in all I'm reading more because I don't have the constant anxiety of anki in the back of my head.

I don't really care about the words, they are just a trigger to get me to write the correct kanji. Kind of like the keywords in RTK. I'm sure I'll learn some of them just by seeing them so often, but I only test reading+definition->kanji.

My goal is to be able to visualize the kanji in my head, which was impossible before. I don't really care about writing by hand, but it is the best way to reach my goal, so I'm doing it.

The only irritating thing so far is words that use different kanji but have the same reading and meaning. Like 作る and 造る, or 柔らかい and 軟らかい. I have to add little notes to the word, like つくる(not 作).

what are some difficult words/phrases for English-native speakers to say in Japanese? some words that actually take some practice for an English tongue?

Hopefully you all don't think I'm a complete idiot, but I've heard "kakatte koi" spoken a million times in anime and discovered that it's a bit of a tongue-twister to say quickly. It took a little practice. I kept getting tongue-tied saying "kakatte toi," but I do it correctly now.

Okay, lets say you're right and I start doing Anki. How are you supposed to go about trimming the definitions down to a number which is feasible to memorize (3 or less seems ideal to me)?

There's no problem with a word like 悲鳴, but putting every definition of 捉える on your card would just be ridiculous.

Also, it seems to me like it would be really easy to start confusing words with similar definitions like 光景 and 景色 if you were drilling them in the context-less format of a vocab card in Anki. What do you do about that problem?
