Hello, I got a question about kanji, specifically.

How am I suppose to learn kanji, exactly? I'm currently following this

I've read Kim's guide > daily Anki > Daily reading looking up stuff I don't know

But, is that all I should be doing? I've got like, Kodansha's kanji book and RtK here, but I'm not sure how should I start them and until where I should read because anons not always recommend it. Sounds like some people believe I'll learn by osmosis but I believe I won't since I don't really pay much attention to the kanjis I'm looking up... (Not on purpose, it's just that only seeing them is not exactly enough to remember them forever).

Also, about the Text Book (Genki):
Should I ignore it all? Won't I miss important stuff this way? Since the book teaches specific stuff like hours, months, etc. I don't think I'll learn it all just playing moege and reading Yotsubato (for now).

tl;dr:
1) he likes it because it's designed as a professional sentence bank, not because of the quality of the word list. while explaining this he doesn't mention anything about the specific quality of the word list, but he probably thinks it's okay. apparently the first two words are 私 (わたし not わたくし) and です
2) apparently there's audio from both genders for each sentence? i have no idea. he implied it but didn't state it literally.
3) the sentences are less unnatural/biased than core2k/6k's (not a surprise, core 2k/6k's sentences are full of unusual amounts of english names in katakana etc)

what does that 風に mean?

>> No.19777430

Hey guys, learning grammar does not teach you words, it only makes it easier for you to understand new words faster when you see them for the first time in context.

Every form of a word is stored as a separate word in your brain (in the same lexeme), so learning grammar rules for conjugations doesn't mean you'll know every form of the word. In other words, just because you know how to create potential form, causative form, and causative-passive form, you're not going to have 捕まえられる, 捕まえさせる, and 捕まえさせられる just because you've seen and learned 捕まえる. You have to see and use each of those words enough to actually have them. As an example, you understand what "ing" means but "understanding" probably seems weird to you because most of you probably have never seen it or have only seen it a few times. You know what it means because you know what "understand" and "ing" mean but it's not in your active vocabulary because you never see or use it.

I'm not trying to forsaken grammar study but I think what Steve says about not studying grammar very much has a ring of truth to it. I thought this was interesting enough to share.

It not being a real word makes it the perfect example because it follows all English rules but there's no chance you would have ever seen it because it's not real.
It's just the change-form (don't know the technical name for it) of iron. The actual word is ionize though.

You can create it, yeah, but it's not already in your lexicon. As in, it's not a word you already know. You have to use grammar rules you understand to make up the word by yourself which is multitudes more difficult. Unless you're fluent you would not be able to do this without a significant pause.

The hiragana marks above kanji in NHK easy are highly useful to me. Matt is such a hack, after he started considering Patreon I zealously supported him thinking he'd quadruple the amount of content he realeases. Thing is he basically realeases scraps or nothing on his open channel and a bunch of low-impact videos for us patrons, he even made a cap for videos for $5+ Patrons, so if you pay $3 you can't watch 1/3 of the content even though you're still paying.
He says it's all about:
>too many people ask me questions
instead of saying str8 that he wants to earn good money and the more you pay the more you get in return.
He promises a lot of stuff, all those decks with native audio and whatnot but nothing comes to reality. He just lives off people's money and lazies it out because he found a naive bunch of people who want to learn Japanese tired of regular methods. But he won't release it all at once, he will give you small bite chunks so he can drain as much money from you as he can. He lives in the USA, he ain't broke. A dude in some pisspoor country like Ukraine would probably appriciate the money more because it's considerable for him, but for Matt it's like pennies and he needs more to go on trip to Japan with 5k a month so he can then release 1 video a month.
Like where is that money even going but just as a royalty for him that he's so good at Japanese, there's no payback to it. I'm not going to pay any more, I cancelled.

I'm not sure if it's indicating that they feel divine to wear, or if the author of the text is just hyperbolically describing how sexy they are to look at (like that phrase "boobs are filled with mens' hopes and dreams").

Also, I kind of doubt the name along provides enough detail, but I'll ask anyway in case the exact choice of gives away context I missed: Is it describing boots with a flat heel (<1 inch), or heeled boots with a narrow pointed heel (like we think in regards to "high heels" in English)

I'm not an otaku. I'm a world citizen. I'm a lover of the arts. I'm a Japanophile. While I can appreciate your cutesie, big eyed garbage as a component of the great cultural story of Japan, my interests and aesthetic pallet ascend far beyond to encompass the spirit and experience that is Yamato. Noh theater? Buddhist poetry? The seasonal ritual of farming the rice paddies? I embrace all of these and so much more that I could write a scroll taller than the height of Fuji-san and still never convey the depth of my connection to that majestic archipelago on the pacific rim. I am a being beyond the comprehension of pathetic otaku like you.

I'm looking through the archives at some of the pages posted. It's hard to remember exactly how I was at 10 VNs, but I can imagine myself fucking up 香具. Definitely would have fucked up the names. Also, even now I just misread 事項 as じこ. Depending on the page there is certainly a good chance I would and may still screw up something.

The obvious answer is to just speak more but being outside of nipland finding someone that speaks japanese is pretty tough. There's of course people you can talk to online but that's pretty embarrassing for autists like ourselves. I suck as speech too but I find myself getting better just by thinking/expressing my thoughts in japanese as much as I can. A lot of the awkwardness/pauses feel like they get better as you become more comfortable with pronunciation.
