Hello, I got a question about kanji, specifically.

How am I suppose to learn kanji, exactly? I'm currently following this

I've read Kim's guide > daily Anki > Daily reading looking up stuff I don't know

But, is that all I should be doing? I've got like, Kodansha's kanji book and RtK here, but I'm not sure how should I start them and until where I should read because anons not always recommend it. Sounds like some people believe I'll learn by osmosis but I believe I won't since I don't really pay much attention to the kanjis I'm looking up... (Not on purpose, it's just that only seeing them is not exactly enough to remember them forever).

Also, about the Text Book (Genki):
Should I ignore it all? Won't I miss important stuff this way? Since the book teaches specific stuff like hours, months, etc. I don't think I'll learn it all just playing moege and reading Yotsubato (for now).

sorry but i'm going to stay in the pre-production phase for another year, the DJT/AJATT methods produce visible results later than genki. that said i have 400 episodes of raws under my belt and i'm getting more and more confident with unassisted real time language interpretation

1) he likes it because it's designed as a professional sentence bank, not because of the quality of the word list. while explaining this he doesn't mention anything about the specific quality of the word list, but he probably thinks it's okay. apparently the first two words are 私 (わたし not わたくし) and です
2) apparently there's audio from both genders for each sentence? i have no idea. he implied it but didn't state it literally.
3) the sentences are less unnatural/biased than core2k/6k's (not a surprise, core 2k/6k's sentences are full of unusual amounts of english names in katakana etc)
4) book doesn't say to use anki, nuke says to use anki

I might be stupid, but how do I search for a particular author or work in this? For the manga page, the options available to me seems to be the Gallery, the Master Page, Random, Completed Manga by Year, Completed Manga by Magazine, Still Running Manga and All Manga. That would be the fastest way.

The easiest way would be to select
^Hide books translated from English
^Hide non-retail books
Then Ctrl+F. I'm going to request a novel version of the 漫画一覧表 page on feedback and the developer might add that. That novel page has heaps more ebook retail rips than the cor, which is mostly light novel scans.

Hey guys, learning grammar does not teach you words, it only makes it easier for you to understand new words faster when you see them for the first time in context.

Every form of a word is stored as a separate word in your brain (in the same lexeme), so learning grammar rules for conjugations doesn't mean you'll know every form of the word. In other words, just because you know how to create potential form, causative form, and causative-passive form, you're not going to have 捕まえられる, 捕まえさせる, and 捕まえさせられる just because you've seen and learned 捕まえる. You have to see and use each of those words enough to actually have them. What news sites do you guys use? I like them since they have varied vocabulary and are often about Japan's domestic topics. However, reading NHK easy is starting to get somewhat too easy, not to mention the fact that they only release 5 news each day. Reading through them only takes me about an hour or less each day. The hiragana marks above kanji in NHK easy are highly useful to me. I checked regular news by NHK and they seemed like a too big leap in difficulty, mostly due to lack of babby wheels for kanji and large increase in a lot harder words. I think your hypothesis is mostly correct but you have to factor in that natives internalize the meaning of suffixes and root words such that a "new word" consisting of what might be common individual components could be instantly understood. This won't be true all the time but often. I felt comfortable reading and was certainly enjoying myself after 10, but I was still pretty shit. Couldn't read one of those Toradora pages without mistakes, for example. After 20 you will be a lot better than most professional translators but still have a ton of room for improvement.

I'm looking through the archives at some of the pages posted. It's hard to remember exactly how I was at 10 VNs, but I can imagine myself fucking up 香具. Definitely would have fucked up the names. Also, even now I just misread 事項 as じこ. Depending on the page there is certainly a good chance I would and may still screw up something.

The obvious answer is to just speak more but being outside of nipland finding someone that speaks japanese is pretty tough. There's of course people you can talk to online but that's pretty embarrassing for autists like ourselves. I suck as speech too but I find myself getting better just by thinking/expressing my thoughts in japanese as much as I can. A lot of the awkwardness/pauses feel like they get better as you become more comfortable with pronunciation.
