You see, the game attacks the player for wanting to be the good guy and wanting to save the day. It assumes we play military shooters because have some deep-seated need to be "heroic." Gameplay-wise it was an alright game. Despite having two companions they managed to not make it feel like a game-long escort mission.

Story-wise it was also alright, though for a single playthrough. The type of story doesn't lead to any replayability, so when you try to play it again knowing how things go and what happens past Martin's insanity, you're still gonna end up doing the same things like the white phosphorus scene. Not really unexpected since you're still controlling the guy that has zero idea what's going to happen at that point. Part of me feels the story would've fitted better as a movie or something else without player interaction, but then it'd not have the impact it ended up having on top of the player and the main character coinciding almost 100% in the frustration of having done terrible things that they justify as the only way to progress.

In the end Walker was a hero, but not in the way he wanted to be which was save everyone. I think you're forgetting that those kinds of plants grow in green realms as well, they just don't eliminate all normal plants. As noted below:
