I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following fuckery:

I want to mine and I downloaded all the programs for it (yomichan, anki, ankiconnect) and I set up the way I want my mined words to be shown. That is Vocabulary gets {expression}, reading is {reading} and so on. Naturally I put Definition for {dictionary} but for some reason yomichan doesn't add the definition for any word I add to my deck. I adds the other shit like the reading without problem but the definition is for some reason always left out. It's stupid shit.

Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it? Help would be greatly appreciated.

There's two job positions available for new graduates at Japanese companies, 総合職 and 一般職. The former is for men traditionally and includes basically everything except secretary shit and is higher paid, the latter is lower paid and no 転勤 but it's mostly for girls and includes doing the simpler office tasks. Look it up and look up 新卒一括採用 while you're at it, interesting stuff

The reading part is the longest part and worth the least points relative to time spent on it. It's very unlikely that you can finish it unless you read a lot (not just Japanese, I mean you're used to reading books in any language, and doing so quickly).
If your goal is to pass JLPT, just focus on kanji/vocabulary and listening. As long as you get a third of the points on the reading and do reasonably well in kanji/vocabulary and listening, you'll pass.

Japanese has such a strange flow when listening to it. Of course, reading a lot can help you with listening since you'll know what to expect when you go to listen, but there's a huge contrast between extremely concise things (lots of compound nouns that convey lots of meaning with just 2 syllables) and basically anything else. Weird getting "frontloaded" with a shit ton of info only for a verb or adjective to take up 3x as much space to convey 1/2 the meaning.

Hello pals. I am currently reading this manga. While the first chapter had bad pacing and tried to cram in too much, I can't blame the mangaka (that's Japanese for "comic book artist and author") too much, as it is his first work. The second chapter was much better.

Anyway, look at how cute the titular 吊金先生 is. That's him with the money. If you feel bored and want "GTO with money" then give it a look. It is a very light read. Even as a beginner I only had to look up a word or two per page. Well, I say beginner, but I have already read a few "light novels" (that's a Japanese term for "young adult novels"), myself! Ha ha.

Looking at and viewing don't really convey what I want to convey, because you do not need to know any Japanese to do those, whereas to fully grasp the storyline you must be able to parse dialogue. Eating is out of the question, unless you are importing physical manga (Japanese comic books) in order to eat them, in which case your meals would be few and far between (to say nothing of the cost of importing!). Consuming is probably the closest of the options that you have suggested, as it can be used in a pretty vague sense that so many English words fall prey to.

Might be related to how they grade the test. It's not regular marks for each question, I read they apply some fancy statistical method to make all tests roughly as difficult to pass over time (for example to avoid having an N2 test way easier or way harder to pass than the previous/next one).

Here are my 2 cents
First off pick up something easier.
Set up a mining deck, add any words that you deem important (not shit like 瑠璃 mind you). If after a while you realize your retention is shit take ~5 days to study the most frequent radicals and easier Kanji, you could use N5's kanji list for example. The idea is to make kanji not look like scribbles, the hardest part of the language for a beginner is kanji recognition by far.

For what it's worth, I tried doing the whole "reading with 0 vocab" meme and it's dumb as fuck. Just buckle down and do 1000-1500 words of core2k before you start reading. I gave up on brute forcing with no vocab and spent a few months just droning and it made it way easier. The correlation between the first few thousand words in core and simple reading material like NHK easy is pretty good. Even when I just transitioned into reading with 1500 words, there would be the occasional article where I'd know almost all of the vocab.

It also makes it way less frustrating because even understanding 5/10 words in a sentence is less annoying than knowing 0. Makes you less likely to get pissed off, say fuck it, close your reading material and then procrastinate it for days/weeks/months like I did.

A final benefit is that once you get good at rote memorizing kanji out of context, it will make remembering what you mine way easier as well. To put it in context, and I don't give fuck if I get called a brainlet, it took me 40-50 minutes to rote my 20 daily words when I just started. Now I can remember the same number of words that I've mined in 10-15 minutes or so.

Wait, I'm confused. I'm doing my Anki deck daily (20 new/day), planning to go to 2K seen and then set new/day to 0 (still do the hopefully decreasing amount of reviews) and begin reading and assembling a mining deck.
Is this a correct way to do it? I'm asking because the Anki cards only have the word in the appropriate kanji/kana on the front and the reading, definition, sentence on the back (It's the core2K/6K deck). Google isn't giving any results for reddit so I'll answer I guess. Yes, core2k teaches you recognition. Production of kanji is a different skill. It is not necessary at all unless you are personally interested in it for some reason, or you plan on working in a Japanese company in Japan.

As far is that being the correct way to do it, I'd say it is but you don't have to wait till you get to 2000 words to start reading. If I could do it over again, I'd start reading at 1000 and then learn 10 new words from my mining deck and 10 from the core deck till I reached 2k.

it's a pick your poison kinda thing. you are going to be lost when you start reading if you have 200 or 2000 words in anki. i personally think starting to read with so little vocab absolutely no familiarization with grammar is not worth it just for the frustration alone. at the end of the day, spending 2 months droning anki and going through a grammar guide is nothing, you're going to be spending years and years learning this language. believe it or not, understanding even 1/3-1/4 of the words in a beginner sentence makes it way less likely you'll just ditch learning the language entirely out of frustration.

Also, recognition (vocab) cards are not free of problems. Reading does a million other things that anki doesn't, so they are not equatable. Same goes for listening. You get a flow of Japanese with context when you read or listen, you just get words if you do anki. Words won't teach you Japanese.

Are you trying to picture all the new words you encountered over the last week in your head? You should not expect to be able to do that. That's unreasonable because it is not how learning words works.

You come across a word and look it up, then you come across it again and maybe look it up, then you stop looking it up the next few dozen times you come across it. You need to realize that you are the one without perspective, because you have spent zero fucking time learning Japanese. i gave it some more thought and i think i have some better advice now. if you have already done some of this, skip to the first part you haven't done yet.

when you're reading for learning there should be some arbitrary maximum amount of information

if you know too little, it may very well be impossible for your brain to truly understand what it's taking in

you should memorize the most common several hundred words (any deck will do, even shitty ones), read a grammar guide (not a textbook), and then start out by eating very simple manga like flying witch, or very fun manga with full furigana like zettai reiiki.

at this point you should not be concerned with actually literally understanding anything, and you should not look anything up if you can guess at what it might mean. this part of the process needs to be as fun as possible or your brain will burn out (lit: deplasticize).

let the pictures guide you, and once you're doing eating your first or second volume of manga, start trying to read other things for a few days and see if you're picking up any words yet. if you are, you're ready to read whatever you want for the sake of learning.

japanese takes a very long time to learn, and there are shittons of things you have to learn that literally nobody in the world can teach you or make a deck for. take it easy and get as much exposure as possible starting as soon as it helps.

What Pokemon is good at teaching you in the early stages:

- Basic vocabulary, provided that you "mine" the Kanji versions of the words (pull 戦う instead of たたかう, 逃げる instead of にげる、etc)
- Getting used to past tense, since battle messages are typically displayed in it
- Reading lots of Kana, especially Katakana since it is super common. If you can remember how a name sounds, you will eventually remember those kana.
- Learning the occasional cool word like　バツグン, as well as some of the more interesting attack names that will (surprisingly) serve you well (催眠術、火の粉、泡、吹雪、 自爆、 etc)
- Some attacks even have small grammar points in them (まるになる) which can help solidify certain things
- Pokemon names often contain puns or interesting words worth knowing (フシギダネ = 不思議+種/だね？, オニスズメ = 鬼+雀 which is more straightforward).

What pokemon is not good for in the early stages
- Sentence comprehension since there's a decent deal of slang
- Kanji, since there are none in any Pokemon before Black/White
- It's tiring to play while actually stopping to jot down words, so it may seem pretty lame at first. However, the whole point is that you get more and more words built up so you encounter fewer new words as you go along.

My friend told me my way of learning is horrible. Want your opinions anons. So instead of learning Hiragana and Katakana I just jumped into Pokemon in Japanese. I just individually looked up every character for hours until I eventually stopped needing to for every single one.

It doesn't take long for anki to be as beneficial to your Japanese as it would be for your English. Right now, there's a lot of English vocabulary - jargon or otherwise - that you could be memorizing through Anki. Why aren't you doing it? Well, because at a certain point, you know the vast majority of the words and only need to look up an outlier every now and again. Usually you can just figure out a word from context. The same holds true for Japanese. If you actually do a decent amount of reading practice, you'll be naturally encountering the commonly used Japanese words so often that you don't even need Anki. You'll comfortably know most all words used in Japanese writing soon enough. The only reason you'd need anki is the same reason you'd "need" Anki for English.

You can't avoid basic mistakes anyway. The bulk of language mistakes are "basic" mistakes, because language is at its core a very wide ocean of basic stuff that's difficult to learn thanks to sheer quantity. As a forward example, the prime minister of Japanese was semi-recently mocked for completely misreading a common kanji word (云々 as てんでん instead of うんぬん). That's the prime minister we're talking about here, not a random Japanese guy. As a reverse example, Japanese people have devoted decades of their lives to learning English and still make basic the/a errors. You just have to accept that now and forever, you're going to sound like an idiot, just it'll happen less often in the future.

As an aside, Japanese people - in my experience - are absurdly forgiving of poor Japanese. As long as they basically understand what you're saying, you'll be fine. It's okay to make mistakes, which is great because it's going to happen no matter what.

I think you're overestimating the numbers here. Japanese, incidentally, is a bit different from English since kanji often provide pretty helpful clues as to the meaning of the word which makes deriving them from context much easier than in English.
