That was a long time ago, anon. As early as the Heian period, the guardian animals would've been both a guardian lion and the komainu that Aunn is based off of, which has the iconic horn. A long time ago the Buddhist Chinese artists made statues called shishi (獅子 translation: lion/stone lion) based on lion temple art commonly seen in India. Lions in Indian Hindu and Indian Buddhist art were seen as protectors of the dharma. Chinese Buddhists adopted this symbol and added their own twist to it. These Korean lion statues had little to do with similar statue guardian creatures called haetae/haitai(해태) (known as xiezhi 獬豸in China and kaichi 獬豸or shinyou 神羊in Japan) and were instead conflated with each other when reaching Japan. From Korea, the shishi/saja made it's way into Japan where it was then labeled komainu (狛犬), which literally translates to "dog from goryeo/koryeo/goguryeo/kokuryeo" (ancient Kingdom of Korea). The 犬 (inu/dog) character is misleading, however. It used to be that the two statues were different in Japan, with the left one (hornless/a) being called shishi and the right one (horned/um) being called komainu. The horn on the komainu (korea dog) comes from confusion with the Korean haetae, who had a horn. The hornless was always known as shishi (lion). Gradually, the difference between the two faded and both statues became hornless shishi-type guardians, but the name "komainu" stuck for whatever reason. It's important to note that they were never thought of as dogs in Japanese antiquity, but always as lions. Due to "inu" being in the name and the 犬 gradually becoming to mean dog instead of guardian, popular culture now dictates that shishi/komainu are to be thought of as dogs. What brought this misinterpretation further along into general consensus was the fact that western travelers to China and Japan would always refer to the statues as "foo dogs". I really don't see how just because Komainu were never considered dogs until modern times means we have to go back to considering them lions. It's the same situation as Hecatia's transition from an Anatolian chief deity and sun goddess to being a Titan of Greek mythology, but in modern times. The revisions of history people place on mythological and cultural aspects of their surroundings will change to fit the people, so if someone with so much important like the figurehead of another pantheon of gods to a minor goddess is possible, I don't see why a lion can't become a dog.

Aunn's as much of a dog as Kyouko, who isn't actually a dog either yet the Japanese treat her as one due to her looks alone (yet there is admittedly little to no reason to assume she is one from a mythological standpoint). In short, there's no fucking reason to get so hung-up on Aunn originally being a lion as the culture of a people change the view and positions of things from other regions and the past to better fit their perception of it.

Oh no, not at all. It's because it has 'inu' in it that it makes sense for people in Japan to believe komainu are dogs and to treat them as such. As far as I can tell, I can't find anything to back the claim that 犬 originally meant protector. It's always been used with the connotations of a dog, with various theories as to the origins of the kanji (it's possible that anon's taking one such theory as gospel), but I think the more widely-accepted explanations for the origin of the kanji is one of three:
1. That 'inu' came from the Old Japanese 往ぬ (to leave or to be gone)
2. From the compound of 家 (house/home) and 寝 (sleep)
Both of which implied that the dog would guard the home while the master is away and
3. 狗, the ancient Japanese word for puppy

So yeah, it totally makes sense for Aunn to be a dog or even a puppy rather than a lion, I agree. Dogs are so much cuter and give off the universal understanding of loyal, faithful guardians than lions anyway.

Both of them aren't dogs, but a werewolf and a wolf tengu, yet both of them are often depicted or treated as such despite the fact wolves aren't the same thing as domesticated dogs. There aren't really any dog youkai that we know of in Gensokyo, but the ones that are doglike or being dog-related are therefore treated as being akin to dogs.
